I saw a "game" discussion thread, but its all about "video games", so let's start a "board game" discussion thread! My boyfriend and I (mostly him) own a rather large board game collection in our house. Its always just us two :c I wish we had more friends. My boyfriend loves to play super strategic games, often 2-player, head-to-head which sometimes gives me stress (I guess I get too competitive). I'm actually pretty good at them, and often am the only female player at tables for certain games. Let's start this discussion with either the last board game you played OR your favorite :3 I'll go first with the last board game I played: Recently we found some neighbors that also play !!! We played Azul as our first neighbor board game meet up :3 boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/230802/azulI highly recommend this game as it is great for new people: there's not a lot of rules. But it has a lot of depth in your choices, so its great for those folks who want a challenge. I won the last game tho >:3 beating my boyfriend!! (and he went before me; so he could easily mess me up)

When I was still living in my home country (Switzerland), I used to do board game night every Friday or Saturday night, usually going to my sister's (who's not really into board games or games in general) and basically "forcing" it on everybody (my boyfriend at the time, my sister's husband, other invited friends -- all non-gamers, haha). The type of evening that made me come out of my shell! I had never heard of that game Azul, but from what I saw and read, I think I would definitely enjoy it! I love abstract games like this, and Euro games in general. Another abstract Euro game I recently started playing because they released an iOS/Android version is Noch Mal!. It's a pretty simple game with a fair amount of luck, but also light strategy. Definitely better than I thought at first. One thing we love about it is that each game session is pretty short (only about 20 minutes), so we can easily find a moment to play it. A more "meaty" board game conversion to iOS/Android that I bought not long ago is Istanbul. It's not overly complicated (else my boyfriend would never want to play it), but involves quite a bit of strategy and decision-making (agonizing choices), and I love the looks of it.
I have soooooooooo many more, haha!

I've never played the games you listed, but I found it super funny that you have the opposite problem of me: my boyfriend loves complicated games and I sometimes just don't want to always play complicated games. I've started to prefer them now. Yesterday we played a game with a friend that moved away and is in town <3 We played "Anansi and the Box of Stories" boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/217298/anansi-and-box-storiesTrick taking game for 3+ people. Really fun! Played this trick taking game: Fox in the Forest for 2 players and I liked it ^^ I won boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/221965/fox-forestTrick taking games are super easy to play and teach. Literally just play a card. But there's a lot of depth to it.

Again, I never heard about those games you mentioned! And I thought I knew so many! I love to discover obscure or less known ones! That fox game looks really nice, I'll have to check it out. I try to avoid games that can't be played with only 2 players, since it's only me an my boyfriend. That's one of the reason why I love to get digital versions of board games: most of them allow you to mix human players with AI players, so that opens up a lot of games I couldn't play otherwise. Also, digital versions don't take any space in my house (a lot of my board games suffered damage in a flood in our basement -- trying not to think about it, makes me so sad), there's no lengthy setup at the beginning, and they keep score for you, which makes things a lot easier and speedy. There are a few games that I consider staples in our board game collection, one in particular that is very well known (at least I think so?). I wonder if anybody knows it too? What is probably our most-played game ever: Ticket to Ride! The rules are easy, the length is medium, and it mixes luck and light strategy beautifully. What's fun is that we're never sure who is going to win until the very end, when the game adds up the points -- and we're almost always just a few points away from each other, which makes it encouraging to the loser. I love to draw cards every turn (the element of luck) and lay wagons on the map, completing tickets. We own the physical board game (both the US and Europe main maps), and also the PC and iOS digital versions (which has many DLC maps we love, too -- one being Switzerland, my home country, woo!). I love to play the PC version via LAN, together, each on our own computer.
Then, because my boyfriend has a high-stress job, we love to play super-relaxing games, especially if they're not too long (so we can fit more in). At the top of the list for relaxing board games, I must mention:
Lotus I only own the digital version, and both the graphics and audio feel like a stroll in a beautiful, exotic garden. Again, both luck and light strategy, drawing petals and building flowers. Pretty short game length and like a balm on the brain.
TokaidoThis game is absolutely gorgeous, with soothing music (again, I only have the digital version). The setup is very unique, with each player going on a journey of discovery, collecting souvenirs along the way. No battling or dying involved.

I also have the digital version of Ticket to Ride and love it but have yet to convince my family to play with with me. I may get the box version one day to try to convince them. I do have Tabletop Simulator which we were using to play a few things together. Our other PC broke though so we haven't used it lately as you can't hide cards if you are using the same screen.
We've played a lot of more simplistic games but now my daughter is getting older I want to get her into some more meaty games. I've bought a little 6 in 1 set of classic games for Xmas; Dominoes, Draughts, Chess, Backgammon, Pick Up Sticks and some playing cards. I'm not great at chess but she's only just started learning how to play herself so we can get better at that together.
Do card games count? I love playing Uno, it's particularly fun when played with at least three people instead of two because it's a bit more chaotic with the change of direction of play card and making people miss their turns you can feel a bit ganged up on in a fun way. I also personally enjoy a basic game of Connect 4. Quick to play, a bit of strategy involved or just dumb luck because the other player wasn't paying attention. We enjoy playing Cluedo junior as well. (I think it's called Clue in the US) It's slightly more simplistic than the original and involves missing cake not murder but the strategy is pretty similar.

I've not played any of those games you mentioned RQ. But I've heard of them! My boyfriend picks up a lot of new games, so I'm not surprised a lot of the games I mention are obscure. We watch Youtube channels (I recommend the Dice Tower) dedicated to new board games coming up and follow Kickstarters. Two days ago, we played Dice Throne: an easy, yatzi style game with fantasy style characters and powers. boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/244271/dice-throne-season-two-battle-chestSeason 2 arrived so we were trying the new characters. I am known around my house as the dice queen because I always get lucky rolls (but I always lose horribly when dice and tactics are required). We played two games and my boyfriend and I each won one: that was the first time he'd ever won a game of Dice Throne out of the 5+ times we've played! I played an Escape Room style board game called Exit, and it was LOADS of fun. Really tricky logic puzzles, but anyone can play! Even the girl in our group that hates hard board games had fun with some of the puzzles. They require creativity to solve ;3 boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/203420/exit-game-abandoned-cabinYesterday, I decided to let my 12 yr old students (I'm a teacher) give the game a try and see if they could exit in a class period. I am surprised they were able to figure out the puzzles that we adults got stuck on!! Kids these days are too smart The only game I've played on a screen is Race for the Galaxy. Its a great engine builder type game that I will never beat my boyfriend at, but at least I am beating my own score each time I play boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/28143/race-galaxyI'm not as into space games as my boyfriend is. I prefer fantasy. Anyway, the reason we don't play a lot of computer board games is because my boyfriend is a software engineer so he doesn't want to play on the computer when he gets home. He's tired of looking at a screen all day for work. That's why we own and play mostly physical copies of games. And Catbaloo, Card games def count ^^ We played a card game fighting game called BattleCON! Its really tricky... Its basically Street Fighter as a card game. boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/123123/battlecon-devastation-indinesBUT I beat my boyfriend for the first time the other day!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Edit: BattleCON has an online version now if you want to try it.

Anyway, the reason we don't play a lot of computer board games is because my boyfriend is a software engineer so he doesn't want to play on the computer when he gets home. He's tired of looking at a screen all day for work. That's why we own and play mostly physical copies of games. That makes complete sense. I would love to have more physical games (I used to -- well, still do, but most of them are flood-damaged), but I can't afford it. The majority of digital games (at least the iOS/Android versions, which are great on an iPad) cost only $5 or less, so I can buy many more. Also, no shelf space needed, and no fear of damage. And I love that I don't need to keep count of points, too. I would absolutely LOVE that Exit board game (love the looks, too!), but my boyfriend would take off running if I told him the game lasts 60-120 minutes! The Dice Throne game looks like something we would both enjoy. And that first game you mentioned, Azul, I really want that one! I hope someone makes a digital version!
As far as card games go (and yes, they absolutely count!), my boyfriend is obsessed with the classic Skip-Bo. We have a digital copy, so he plays it mostly against AI, as it's not one of my favorites. I am just about to buy us a little digital Christmas gift (well, three, but who's counting), and two of them are in fact card-based: - A two-player card game called Morels. I know very little about it, but I love the looks of it, and it has great ratings and short playtime. Plus, I love mushrooms!
- A tile-placement game called Indian Summer. I beta tested this one on iOS, and my boyfriend and I loved it. Another bucolic and graphically lovely game that's not overly complicated or long.
- A deck-building word game called Hardback, which is relatively new and, apparently, the sequel of a slightly different game called Paperback. I'm really looking forward to this one, as we don't have a lot of word games around, or worthy card games for that matter.
We enjoy playing Cluedo junior as well. (I think it's called Clue in the US) It's slightly more simplistic than the original and involves missing cake not murder but the strategy is pretty similar. I remember Clue! (I called it Cluedo, too). I used to like it a lot, but nobody ever wanted to play it with me! If I remember well, it's a minimum of 3 players, so that made things even more difficult to get a game going. I also had a 2-player spinoff called Clue: The Great Museum Caper (I loved its 3D appearance!) but, again, nobody ever wanted to play it with me.
I've had Tabletop Simulator in my Steam wishlist for a while, but never got to buy it, mostly because I'd have to buy it twice (one copy for me, and one for my boyfriend, for LAN games), and then it would get really costly with all the DLC... (I know, that's the whole point, but still).

Tonight we played Dune the board game from 1979 based off the book. The gameplay is not my favorite because its got the alliance problem. But because of this, it ends abruptly which is good and bad: it doesn't overstay its welcome and still lasts about 1 to 2 hrs.
So why play? Its fun to play with other folks who love the Dune books. I was the only one of the 6 who is the least into Dune. I was the Atreides and lost pretty quickly in the first turn because I made bad choices. The freaking Guild and Emperor allied and had all the spice and no one could stop them!
Although you can no longer purchase the game, you can print and play the game, but I'd not recommend it unless you like the series. It's def fun to watch the movie beforehand and play x3
(I've played so many more board games since I last posted but I've been too busy lately because of the holidays :x)

I hadn't noticed there was a reply until now!
I never read the Dune books, but seen the original movie. I do love science-fiction, so the topic is up my alley, but I no longer play very long strategy games (could never convince my boyfriend).
I ended up picking a fourth digital board game conversion at half price during the holidays (for iOS because it's convenient to play anywhere, and we love to play outdoors). I had never heard about it until I stumbled upon it in the App Store -- it's a fairly recent game, even the physical version. It's called Cat Lady - The Card Game and it's a short (15-30 minutes) card game for 2 to 4 players It's immediately become one of our favorites! First, we love the kitty topic, but the game is a lot of fun, and feels different from other card games. During gameplay, we need to select from rows of 3 items which can be mixed with: cats (which needs feeding different number and kinds of foods), different kinds of kitty foods, catnip, toys, costumes, spray bottles, and "Lost & Found posters" that allows us to pick up a stray and add him/her to our cattery for extra bonuses. The digital version is super cute, with the cats being animated and meowing all kinds of meows when we feed them, which is one of the things that needs to be done to make points. I can't believe I paid only $0.99 for this game!! (regular price for iOS version is $1.99, which is still super cheap for such a great game). It plays vertically on the screen and comes with AI players that can be mixed with human players -- I play it on iPad, but sure it would work great on a phone, too, if anyone wants a fun and cheap kitty game!

^ that game looks super cute! I might have to look into it.... I recently played Wingspan! A beautiful game about collecting birds to get points and win the game. boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/266192/wingspanIt is great for newbies and seasoned gamers (as there's quite a lot of depth going on!). It's also really gorgeous! There are 200 bird cards each with a different bird on it! And the cards are really accurate to the real life info of the bird including wingspan, habitat, food, art, etc. The birds can eat. The birds can lay eggs. And you can find more birds and add them to your aviary. I love love love this game so far~ I wanna play again ^^

^ That's funny, I just saw an ad for this game, I think it was on Facebook! I was immediately drawn to it because the pieces look so lovely! (I love those eggs!) This is a game I wouldn't mind owning a physical copy of, although I hope they develop a digital version too.
The official website says it will only be back in stock in April! There are a couple on eBay, but damn, that's a lot of money :\

This is a game I wouldn't mind owning a physical copy of, although I hope they develop a digital version too. The official website says it will only be back in stock in April! There are a couple on eBay, but damn, that's a lot of money :\ Yeah its a lot of money :c But its such a beautiful board game. Its too simple for my significant other tho, he's into the heavier engine building games, but I like the art and its great for our friends (who are not as thinky as him). Board gaming is such an expensive hobby. I'm not gonna lie, I'd not afford it on my own. My current significant other is super into the hobby and makes way too much money. Its actually me trying to get him to buy less because we have too many board game ToT I should take a photo of my wall, but I need to organize it waaaay more >< *is embarrassed by the clutter mess* But we have a really nice (expensive) board gaming table (pictured below) instead of a dining room table. Basically we took the room that usually has the TV, couch, and dining table, and turned it into a board gamer's paradise. We just need more friends :c Anyhow, I played a new game last night ^^ "Claustrophobia 1643" board game. I played as the demons and defeated the humans. (another probably expensive board game that my S.O. bought for us >>) I thought it was fun and dark/evil feeling. Has a cool universe. Its asymmetrical, two player (great for us since we really only play with each other). Downsides: it takes up SO much room on the table. Playing the humans looks really hard (as I tore through their flesh with my demons).

I have been playing a lot of Magic: The Gathering (MTG). My s.o. makes EDH (Commander) decks; he has about 12 with all sorts of themes and funny names (some of them are quite offensive but humorous). EDH is MTG but with 100 card decks that are ALL single copies of cards (except Land can of course have multiple copies).
My favorite type of deck to play is a green/white cat tribal deck where I make a cat REALLY big and destroy your face with this big cat >:3
A new deck I've been playing is a blue/black fairy tribal deck (blue/black is so hard to play!!). And another EDH deck that's really fun is a all white angel deck which is thematic to the lore of Sorin (I don't know the names of all the characters ahaha but maybe someone else would wanna talk about it I'll give more details x3).

I used to play a lot of MTG with by boyfriend when we first met! The real cards this time (even though I also have digital versions). I spent soooo much money buying cards, and my bf had quite an extensive collection of classic cards already. I remember I had named one of my custom decks “Bloody Bride” (red/white of course), but my favorite colors to play with were green and blue. I’ll have to go dig up my old decks!

My boyfriend has all the cards. I don't really deck build super well so I give ideas to my boyfriend and he makes decks. Right now the hip fun thing is Commander (because you only need 1 of each card instead of 4). I know a lot of people who have been enjoying Commander recently. Naming decks is probably my favorite part x3
I'm super new to this world: what sorta deck is a green/blue? Big creatures and control I guess? Curious what the theme is.
EDIT: Some boys were playing MTG at school while we were waiting for an exam to begin (I'm stuck proctoring all week). Some girls were interested because I was talking to them about the game. They seem to want to play x3 Better than Exploding Kittens ;)
