I agree about the toy-winning and the playpen-loss though. Total shame. I don't mind the toy thing at all since I've got Tinker. You can use it to get ALL the toys, add new toys, and also create your own toys (which is cool). For the record, when I first started playing petz and was a lot younger, I thought the mini games were really fun. It was cool to see what toy you'd end up getting, and exciting when you got a new toy.I'm confused about the Playpen issue. Isn't it just a scene with a tiled PF Magic image for the background? What did it do?

Yes, the playpen is simply an area that was a tiled wallpaper. What's nice about it though is that your petz could run around the entire screen when in the playpen since there were no horizons, walls, ect. It's also good for posing since there are no environmental distractions, ie. gazing out windows.
For me the playpen is nostalgia, that was all you had in P2. You got bored with it, you changed the wallpaper, that was it. Don't get me wrong I love the scenes in the new games, but something just feels more 'right' to me when I'm in the playpen.

I personally prefer P5, but then again, I haven't had access to P3/4 in a long time, so I don't remember many of its features. I mainly just like P5's litters, and the carrying case with all of the toys. Like Zekumi said, I don't mind the toy-winning thing, because I just used Tinker to get all of the toys, so it's really not a big deal for me. I -do- however miss the playpen...it was nice to have mostly for posing/training and such.
As far as the various complaints of it's glitches/bugs/etc....I haven't experienced any of those? And I've been playing P5 since it came out (not sure how long that's been now). But then again, maybe it's mainly Vista that experiences those sorts of things, and I've got an XP.

That makes sense. I didn't know that about P2. (I've never played anything earlier than P4.)
I'm guessing they didn't include it in P5 because the Desktop does pretty much the same thing, but without the wallpaper. Probably seemed a bit useless.

I've never gotten P4 to work on any of my computers, and I'm pretty pleased with P5, despite the glitches.

I just don't like P5 because it limits who I can adopt out to/adopt from. I breed/hex in P4 so that it's available to everyone, but then I get stuck not being able to adopt other petz. Fail.

I guess I like things simple I dislike the complexity of P5, to be frank. Petz was never meant to be "played" as a win/lose game.

Hehe, after playing in P4 for a bit I've decided to switch versions p: I'm going to keep P5 around so I can play with my old favourites and pretties, but I did clone down Pumpkin since he is too cute to leave behind (Thank yooooou Loxie for having that conversion guide up on your site!).

I guess I like things simple I dislike the complexity of P5, to be frank. Petz was never meant to be "played" as a win/lose game. ... Petz 2/3/4 was always a win/lose game. Your petz either grew up or ran away, lol! Only the original Petz didn't have the runaway feature. Besides, I don't think 'winning' the toys means it's a win/lose game. You don't have to win toys, because they give you the basics needed to 'win' the game (i.e: food bowls, basic treats, some toys, pretty sure they gave you medicine & flea spray). You win the rest of the toys by choice. :3 Still, I'll always be more of a p4 fan. I don't like the fact that they reused the personalities of the old petz in the new ones, and made new toys that do exactly the same things! Like the bacon treats are just steak treats, only prettier. >_<;;

I don't think you can really classify petz as a win/lose game. Like you can never ~win~. Sure I guess you can lose if your petz run away, but it's not like ~game over, you lose!~ Idk I just think they spent a lot of time changing stuff in Petz 5 that didn't need to be changed (mini-games, litters, not having all the toys), instead of focusing on what was important to most of the players, new breeds. The only thing that would have been good was the litters feature, but imho it's really disappointing. There's never as much variation as when you breed a dog multiple times in Petz 4.
Also I think with lack of backwards compatibility they lost more fans than they gained. If it were compatible with Petz 3 & 4, I would definitely use it for the new breedz (if only for variety). But since I automatically lose the ability to breed a pet in Petz 4 once it's in Petz 5, it's easier for me to just leave it Petz 4. I mean you could have two copies of the same pet in Petz 4 and 5, but then it gets overly complicated. Why not just breed in Petz 4 for everyone? Haha.

For me, P4 is still supreme ruler. I do use P5 as well, but when I'm thinking, "Ooh, I could sure go for some Petz time right now), my mouse gravitates towards the P4 icon. P5 does have some perks, ex: The salon, larger litters, fun weather, etc. Still, the old-style feels more comfortable. Like your favorite sweater. Edit: Also, in agreement with Victorian Cyborg in the fact that I love the playpen in P4. It's where I spend the majority of my time when in game. It feels like such a staple, I couldn't believe they left it out of the newer version.

* Considerably more attractive playscenes. = P5 * Crappy JPEG looking playscenes. = P4 Sorry, but I cannot STAND the P5 backgrounds. The perspective is so off. In the family room, in P4 the chair and fireplace is level because they sit on the horizon line (basically the trim on the wall) but in P5 they messed up the angels so now the chairs and fireplace are titled towards you, giving you the impression that the room is folding in half when it should be level. What's even worse is the window sill in the P5 version isn't even at the same angle as the chair and fireplace so it makes the wall look warped. That drives me absolutly INSANE because these things I'm pointing out are basic knowledge you learn in art when you're like 13 o_O And the sad part is they've somehow managed to warp every playscene, even the imports. and... every thing else everybody's said about P5 and it's ticks. I just wanted to add that o.O

If I've converted one person, my work here is done And @ people arguing that petz IS a win/lose game... how? It's not a case of "OMG U LOST THE GAME" if your pet runs away. Besides, with the programs nowadays you can get them back easily if that happens. Petz is a simulator, a little like The Sims, where there's not a clear goal/outcome. It certainly isn't like an action/shoot 'em up/storyboard game like Zelda or Command & Conquer.

^ Yeah, but winning a few toys still doesn't mean it's a complete win/lose game. Like I said, you don't NEED the toys that you win.
I still think it's a win/lose game in a way, since if the pet is gone... you've failed the objective, since it's to take care of a happy, healthy adult pet. :3 The programs 'nowadays' weren't part of the original game's design, were they? So originally, you couldn't get your pet back. That means they were INTENDED to be a SORT of fail/win game. The programs changed that, but not the INTENTION of the game.
Even so: CONVERT TO P4. PLZKTHNXBAINAO.

It still wasn't a win/lose game. Petz 2-4 was just about taking care of your petz. Even ~way back when~ I was about 9 and had Catz II my cat ran away but my dad managed to get it back, so in my mind I hadn't 'lost' anything. Tbh, petz was nothing more than a spruced-up tamagotchi. Sure, your pet can run away/etc but I wouldn't exactly label it as 'losing' the game. You either suck it up and accept it (if you don't have runaway rescue/LNZ etc) or you get the pet back if you do have those programs. Better still, we have the knowledge nowadays to backup our petz on a memory stick or email, so we never lose a thing.
With Petz 5, you either win or lose at those mini games. They're tedious, and you have to try and "win" toyz. In my mind petz isnt about all that; it shouldn't be PLAYED like that. It's a sim, not a glorified noughts&crosses game!
(on the topic of 'why we hate p5' what the HECK is with the monkey in the asian scene?! it terrifies me like no other)
