I'm going to have to bookmark it to watch it later, thank you! I really enjoy learning about the history of Petz and did long before I even played it.
I skipped ahead a bit to preview and I need to say that the guy who shows up at 21:10 or so is terrifying. I never played those later games but now I can see why people didn't like them...

lobb I admire your will power. It's after midnight and I just finished watching it. Definitely worth it <3 It's really fun that she flashed RKC on there.

Ok which one of you made this. Interesting video. Funny seeing my avatar randomly turn up in the middle in a mod related post.
I didn't realise that the shovelware games were just reskinned games from Japan. I'd only tried out a couple briefly because I got them for my daughter.

I honoured that my webby's RKC thread made a cameo in this. xD
Fantastic video! I'm going to check out her Neopets ones as well.

This is a very fun and interesting video, and a good summary of the whole history, from what I can tell!
It did make me chuckle a bit when she was talking about the community's first steps into hexing, and showing BAD_DEATH breeds in the background... those would've been about 20 years ahead of their time, hahaha.

Thor very kindly sent this to me to let me know my site was briefly shown <3 I enjoyed the video and felt it was well-researched and put together - I know very little about the history of Petz, so I learned a lot too! I do wish the creator had reached out to someone in the community for comment - I feel a bit conflicted about seeing screengrabs from people's sites and from convos within this forum without any evidence of direct engagement with the community. More specifically, it's weird to see my site in the vid without being asked why I spend loads of time on it. I don't think it makes sense to speculate on the ongoing endurance of Petz without asking the people who are part of keeping it going why they love it!? I honestly have so many thoughts about this and am struggling to put them into words effectively haha, because I also appreciate that the screengrabs only appear very briefly within a wider discussion about the game in general. Ultimately, I did enjoy the video, I think the creator was thorough and respectful, and that it is worth a watch - I also went and watched their Neopets videos too like Lee!

Yeah! I didn't know either-- I guess it makes sense that to them the brand was always just a name to them 😔 I also agree with gingerade -- But I think I can see why there's no interviews--interviews are a lot more work over just doing the research yourself and reading posts and piecing it together? (I mean, I feel the latter would be more overwhelming to me than say joining a Discord and asking questions! But I also don't make videos like this for a living!) I am curious why they chose the screen grabs they did choose (over classics like say Carolyn's Creations?)-- I feel like they used Twitter (over Tumblr) for research since the main RKC post they linked is also shared on Twitter? Those are just my thoughts on the matter.

I completely agree with the above, it's kind of weird that they didn't reach out to anyone in the community to ask them questions. There's stuff I'd really love to know, as someone who's new to it! Not to mention that it sounds important to know why people are still playing this game and why people are still in a community around it.
Weirdly, I already knew a bunch of the history things. I'm kind of a nerd about game history so I'd read about Petz over the years ahaha.

Not sure if this is Necroposting or not yet, sorry if it is, but this was what I watched a few days back that just THREW me right into this fandom. Didn't even know that these main games existed before I watched it, just thought Petz had always been shovelware!

It's sad that the later games made people think the series was shovelware all along, but I'm glad that through videos like these, people are discovering that's not the case and finding us

I didn't know about the shovelware aspect nor did I know about the reskinning of Japanese games. That was interesting to learn.
I agree with everyone about interviewing some people from the community.
I'm actually going to be watching this with my fiance because he's always interested in things that I'm passionate about and is excited to hear my commentary (cause it's always gold XD) on it.
I also glad that it didn't touch on any sort of drama that has happened within the community.

I also had one of the "Petz 6" Games, the Catz version, and my father hacked my pet files so they'd do all the tricks
