For the past few weeks, I have been working on a new catz breeding project in an attempt to get more of the P5 breed coats into my lines. The previous one I did awhile back was just a calico/Scottish fold project, in which I did mange to create a selective breed (a breeding pair of them can be downloaded from my website, shameless plug). This time I included a few other breeds and wasn't aiming to create an actual selective breed that breeds true; I just wanted to get a cat with some specific traits. These traits were:
-calico face -honey bear fur -B&W shorthair white markings (face, chest, and tailtip) -alley cat cream markings
While I had a preference for some other specific traits (tattered alley ears, either a fluffy honey bear tail or a kinked alley tail, overall calico proportions, green eyes) I know how tricky breeding can be and I knew it would be a bit of a challenge to get my four "must-haves" all in one cat, so I wasn't as picky with these.
After quite a few tries, I finally got what I was after!
She didn't get interesting ears or tail, but she did get green eyes, and she doesn't have any awkward chunky honey bear in her (although I was rather pleased to see that she did inherit the overall honey bear size anyway).
Here are some other keepers that didn't quite fit what I was looking for, but I still liked all these enough to keep them:
I don't know if I'll try a similar project with either desert lynxes or Egyptian maus--I don't like their fur textures as much as honey bears or Scottish folds, but on the other hand, it would be nice to have those textures in more of my mixed breeds, just for completion's sake. So we'll see.

I LOVE the honey bear chubby cheeks oh my gosh. I'd love to see a line of otherwise normal Catz with chubby stuffed cheeks haha

I thought I'd replied to this before, but thank you! I did gain a new appreciation for honey bears after this. The past couple of days I've been working on another P5 breeds project, so I guess I'll just continue it here in this thread rather than make a new one lol. The motivation this time was slightly different, though. Since I don't have as many petz from the P5 breeds as from the other breeds, I have their purebred and mixed breed pages on my crew as the same page. For each breed I had at least one mixed breed for each. Here's who I had as my sole golden retriever mixed breed, Rosa, downloaded ages ago from Vickie's Petz:
She was a mix of all 15 breeds, but I'll admit I was never sure if her face was lab or GR. I went ahead and put classified her as a mixie GR, though, since I didn't want that to be the one mixed breed that I didn't have represented. Lately, though, I realized I could solve this mystery thanks to GenePoolz!
...and, unfortunately, her face is indeed a lab face, not a golden. Well, after moving her where she belonged, I didn't want for my mixie golden retriever page to be empty, so I decided to work on a golden retriever breeding project! I bred them with mutts for the patches, and scotties, poodles, and sheepdogs since I like their coats. No labs, though, so I could tell for sure what page they belonged on!
I got a little carried away and kept eleven of them, ironically making mixed golden retrievers have the highest number of the P5 mixies now lol
Full disclosure that the pink eyes aren't entirely natural... I don't like the tan color eyes that golden retrievers have, and I especially don't like that they're dominant over other eye colors. So after the first round of breeding I edited the golden retriever to have pink eyes straight out of the AC.
And here are the non-golden retrievers from the project that I kept! Funny thing about that last one--she's the highest generation out of all of these, her parents being two of the goldens that I kept. I tried breeding them to see if I'd get even cooler golden mixies, but the results were super disappointing. This smol brown sheepie here was the best I could get, but I found her charming in her own unique way

So we'll see. I guess I'm reviving this thread again, because the completionist in me did indeed embark on an Egyptian Mau breeding project lol. I got a little lazy and ended up using a calico downloaded from Cargo's Calico Catalog on Whiskerwick after four generations of close-but-not-quite catz.
Just five keepers this time:
I bred one another one very similar to the red cali in the middle, only missing the alley patches. I'll probably post that one up for adoption on PUGS or TFM at some point soon.
I guess desert lynxes are coming next? And heck, might as well do a Japanese bobtail project as well and breed spots onto calis lol

Aaaand reviving this thread again, as this weekend I worked on calicoes with desert lynx and Japanese bobtail coats. The previous ones I bred from scratch, but this time I just bred some of my high-gen calico mixies to some purebred DLs and JBs, which in retrospect I should have been doing all along...
The calico-faced keepers:
The first one is probably my favorite--not only do I love her looks with her bobtail and tattered alley ears, but she's also somewhat insane. She charged headfirst onto the carrying case (locked) door no less than three times. I named her Concussion. And the middle one doesn't have a lynx coat, but she has the neat "bug" of having the tabby texture lay over her nonexistent tail, so I had to keep her too.
And the other keepers:
I have a bunch of extras that I'll start posting on PUGS soon.

This picture made me laugh xDD Looks like Concussion isn't the only nutcase you got! <3 Somehow never saw this thread before! I skimmed through it (will read it better later as it interests me!) but loving all the mixies I've seen so far! <3 What a fun project idea! I feel like I need to do something similar once I've finished converting my entire P5 crew, and have a more accurate count of P5 breeds...I know I'm lacking in lots of them and would love more! By the way, I've never been entirely sure how GenePoolz works...does it specifically state the face type of the pet you're looking at? I figured it just mentioned a few genetics they carried, but didn't really confirm what they themselves are. How can you tell? This could come in handy for figuring out some of my own Golden Retriever faces! xD They look even more like labs than I originally thought!!

To be honest, I'm not exactly sure how GenePoolz works myself lol. I know that when I look at Rosa's file in GenePoolz one side shows her head as labrador and the other shows jack russel, although I think that sometimes a pet can show traits that don't actually show in their genes that they can pass down. At any rate, while I was (and still am a bit) unsure about whether Rosa's head was lab or golden, I know for sure the ones I bred up there are goldens, since I bred them from scratch and didn't use any labs at all.

I must say that I'm a huge Concussion fan ;) Very cute!
The way that GenePoolz works is that it shows the gene inherited from each parent-- left and right side (I imagine one is from the mom and one is from the dad but I can't remember if it's left or right for which).
Using your example, with the heads, the program 'll say Lab head on one side and Jack Russel on the other, but obviously only one of those will be "visible" at a time. This becomes really hard to know which parts are exactly what you want because a lot of cat/dog parts do look really similar...

Ah, I figured that's how it worked, although I wasn't 100 percent sure lol. And yeah, I've gotten pretty good at telling the different heads apart, but stuff like legs and feet are pretty difficult for me unless they're really obviously different ones like persian or sheepie.

Ooh this was an interesting thread to read through, with some cute breeding results too! I've just started getting into breeding the P5 breeds (well, only German Shepherds and Pugs so far but eventually I'll expand the project) and I can't believe it's taken me this long, it's actually really fun and hopefully if more people breed/show/adopt them out they will get a little more popularity. Having said that, I definitely want to keep these lines separate from my 'main' ones which only include the "original" original breeds, lol.
