I'm reworking my 'card file' I keep with my pets info on the computer. (breaking up a 31 page Open office document of cats into individual files for each pet.) I'm running into several petz that for whatever reason I simply don't have prefixes for. The sites are long gone, and I don't even have enough information to try and find them on the Wayback machine. One example. A Siamese from a website that was only Meezers, possibly had Meezers in the name, and was bred by Laura. What makes the situation even more confusing for me, is that there were several Laura's around the community then... Somewhere between 2001 and 2005. It's possible that this Laura didn't want her show prefix used, or didn't show at all. (Common then.) Are pets like these show-able under just my StHM's? Or should I avoid showing them? ETA... Anyone know if Spider wants people to use her prefix on petz adopted from her?

I've been wondering what to do about this situation myself. I have quite a few petz who I don't know the prefix for, and they are very old, very old, from as far back as 2005-2007. I have no contact info for the breeders/hexers and if they had a site it's long gone. I might want to show some of these petz at some point and I don't know what to do about their prefix. (Even if I don't show them, I like all my pets to have a prefix and I like making up show names whenever I can.)
Since the people are long gone from the community, I've been debating whether I should just guess, make a prefix for the petz based on the name of the person I got the pet from or their site name if they had one? I dunno, would that be okay?
Or maybe someone else has an idea of what we should do?

None of my petz are super old, but I am finding a lot of times I will get petz and have no recollection of where I got them (here, TFM, PUGs, etc) and there's nothing anywhere that states what prefix to use and the owner name just says "Samantha" or something.
As of now ( I make show names for all my petz as soon as I adopt them to keep things organized) I am just putting "Samantha/PearFlower's SHOW NAME HERE" to make it known I didn't breed the pet, but also that I'm not 100% sure what prefix I should be using??
Not sure if this is the right thing to do but it's what I've been doing as of late..

I honestly just use my prefix if I don't know, and will apologise if inquiry is made. So many petz are /old/ that I have and I doubt those people play petz anymore let alone remember those petz. I dont remember the ones I bred 99% of the time so I don't worry about it too much lol
I did find this in the showname/prefix master thread on here: Name: Spider Prefix: Spi's Site: Spider's Petzery

I would gladly correct the prefix if someone wanted me too. I wanted to make sure it what was Okay with the RKC community in general though, as I'll primarily be joining in the shows held here.

I've been in this situation many times before, here's what I do: If they're a member on a forum then first I check their site if they have one listed. Then I check the member prefix lists on every forum (RKC, WW, and PCG. PUGS used to be the best resource for this sadly). I'll also search to see if I can find old adoption threads of theirs. If still nothing then I just use their forum username (or the name of their site if they have one listed). If I don't know their forum handle then I simply use whatever name it has listed in their profile.

I feel like everyone’s chill and mature enough to give each other the benefit of the doubt that any prefix mishaps are just mistakes and will gladly be fixed if mentioned! I would go ahead and show any pet you like and if a prefix comes out of the woodwork, then hey, add it in! That’s my take, anyway!

I do what ParanoiaPaige mentioned :) - if I completely can't find a person's official site/kennel/cattery/whatever prefix, I just use their name in the profile or whatever the closest I can guess that it might be. I don't think anyone is going to mind if you get it wrong since it shows you tried!
I personally wouldn't just use my own prefix for a pet from someone else (unless I knew they specifically wanted that) since that feels like I'm claiming I made that pet and ignoring that it came from someone else. But I'm probably old fashioned, and like everyone has said it's not really a big deal to anyone.
I'd honestly never know if any bred pet came from me except for when I see my prefix, and then it's a fun surprise like oh hey a pet from me!

I'm with ParanoiaPaige, CoffieDog and Amanda! I try to find a prefix for mystery petz where ever I can, and if there isn't any to be found, I use the breeder/hexer's forum handle or whatever name is in the profile. I don't like using just my own prefix for petz that aren't from me, it's nice to give a little bit of credit and show off a pet's origin in that special little way. (:

I have some I got /years/ ago and changed the owner name so I wouldn't even know where they came from XD The pedigrees don't tend to help me either since they're random, and some even say unknown! I have this like.. treasure trove... of old petz from forever and a day ago and I wouldn't know where to begin if I wanted to show them.

I have that same problem Alexzander , I have some petz that I have no idea who they came from because I changed the owner name to mine and forgot to make a note of the original owner before I did that. *headdesk* Fortunately I only have three petz like that, all three coincidentally I got from the AAC back in the day. I have no idea what to do about those petz. XD
But I do have quite a hand full of Petz who I do have a name of the person I got them from, but I don't know what their prefix is or was. I'm making a last ditch effort to see if anyone recognizes the pet or the person and can help me find the prefix.
I made a small page with all their info and pictures. I posted it to the Petz Facebook community because I know there are a lot of old players there, and so far managed to get one pet's prefix from there. I figure I might as well post the link here too.
So if anyone wants to look here: Petz Missing Things and see if they know any prefixes I'm missing, recognize one of the petz I don't know the owner of, or, there is one pet who is missing a texture. If anyone can help I'd be very grateful, thanks!
And while we're on the subject, does anyone know midnightwolf's prefix?
But, I know that likely most of them I won't be able to find the prefixes for. So in that case, consensus here seems to be that once I've exhausted all possible ways to find the prefix, I make a best guess and use their site name if I have that, or just the person's name if that's all I have. Is that correct? Everyone okay with that solution?

And while we're on the subject, does anyone know midnightwolf's prefix? His prefix is MW's That's what I've seen him using when showing his petz. And it's apparently what I used too when showing one of his hexies a while back.

That's what I'm thinking of going with for now anyway. Ratqueen Are you ok with us using this idea here? This is your forum after all. :-)

Where is PCG? I've never herd of it before. PCG is Petz Community Gathering, an old (now inactive) forum. It used to be very active and contains a lot of Petz information (including many old adoption threads that contain user's rules/prefixes).

I don't think it's for a forum/me to dictate what to do about prefixes, but I personally agree with what's been said here. I don't think I've ever been in that situation myself so far though, but I mostly show petz I breed myself. I'd probably do the same as paranoiapaige does if I really wanted to show an unknown pet though.
