I'd like to second Catbaloo's mention of VMware. I have Windows 8.1, and was able to get an old game working using VMware virtual box. It took some finagling to get everything set up and working, but it did work.
@catman89: I'm not sure why you say to never use Win 98 in virtual box. Granted it does take some extra tweeking to get working, and some things like USB may not work, but there's nothing wrong with using it to get an old game or program working. I've used it myself without issue once I got it set up.
Yeah, I hate how newer Windows versions aren't compatible with a lot of older games. Luckily, I am able to run Petz 2, 4, and 5 on my computer and they work just fine, but I am hoping that I am never forced to upgrade to a Windows version that won't run Petz.

I successfully set up a Windows XP 32 bit OS and followed all the steps I could find to set up a shared folder so I could actually transfer Oddballz and Petz II over to it but sadly the shared folder never shows up in my network drive I used VM Workstation too

I've used it myself without issue once I got it set up. That's because Win98 and before aren't optimised for it, and I know this from personal experience when I tried it one day. You're going to get a really unstable system and be only in 16 colours. The funny thing is though, Windows NT 4.0 works perfect on it even though that's based on Win95.

I think the compatibility with the old petz games (Dogz, Catz, Oddballz) is caused not exactly by which Windows version (98, XP, 7) but by how many bits it is. The old games are 16 bit so they run on 16 and 32 bit computers only, 64 bit they stop working. The only way around this is a virtual machine or a harddrive partition. I own a 32 bit Windows 7 for this reason, it runs my old Catz but it also has enough power for the Sims 2. This is exactly the problem. Each time I tried, the error I received was about the program would not run on 64 bit system. I downloaded the VMWare, but haven't had time to try it out yet. Thanks to everyone for the helpful advice. I hope to try it out today, provided real life doesn't keep nagging at me.

@catman89: Yeah, from what I understand, Windows 98 wasn't officially supported by VMware, so some things wouldn't work. This was years ago, so there have probably been some changes and probably better ways to get things working, but there was a game that I couldn't get to work in later Win versions, but worked fine in 98. Once I got it going I didn't run into any problems, though I don't think I used it for more than a few hours before I was done anyway.
✬MsWildiful✬: I have Windows 8.1, so I'm not sure about 10, but I have Petz 2 installed and working natively without any compatibility settings. I have it installed in program files, unlike P4 and P5. However, I did use a program called "Take Ownership" when I first got this computer to set permissions so I could make changes and install things in folders that Win 8 restricted, like program files.
I hope someone does get Oddballz working on a newer Windows version. I've never played it, but it looks cute.

Wow, really? Is your Windows 8 a 32 bit? Because I think your PC has to be a 32 bit to run petz games older than 3, my PC is a 64 bit so whenever I try and run the Petz II installer it says that my PC is the wrong version and that Petz II was made for Windows 95. But I'll try to find that Take Ownership program! hopefully it works, never tried installing it in program files before Edit: So I finally got Petz II to work by installing PetzA in combination with Carolyn's Creations modified Exe, only problem is it crashes whenever I try and take out any pet But it works fine if I don't have PetzA installed with the modified exe but for some reason the game is sped up and the petz move really fast.

Actually, it's 64 bit. I've had Petz 2 installed on here for years, so I'm trying to remember what I did to get it working. I do have PetzA installed in Petz 2, and it works, though P2 has a lot more brainsliders than P4 & 5. Did you try the Petz 2 .exe from Sherlock Software's site?

Finally got Petz II to work, I used a different Exe and installed it using the oldest version of PetzA and volia, success! yay! Now I just gotta find out where to download toyz and breedz for Petz II
Thor, I'm not sure. but Petz II has about 8 extra brainsliders that Petz 4 and 5 lacks, they're just labelled Brainslider 7, Brainslider 8 and so on so I have no idea what they do. It's peculiar, I asked about them before on a thread but nobody knew. It's a mystery, I wonder if I could find out myself

^(Why does Petz 2 have more brainsliders?? Does it have more features??) No, it's just PetzA being rather wonky under it. The rest of the sliders you see do nothing I guess.

griffy: Try Windows XP. Good ole' XP will run a lot of games and programs unless they're really old or weird.
I knew I had just recently run across something about Oddballz somewhere. This person says they have it installed using DOSbox and Win 3.11 for workgroups. It does say that it isn't perfect, that some of the oddballz crash DOSbox when taken out, but that honkers and snowbo work. odiesocean.wordpress.com/fanpages/p-f-magics-petz/

I did finally manage to get vmware windows 98 SE running oddballz ^^ After another error with mksockets apparently because vmware authorisation service wasn't running. I will probs keep windows XP in mind for any other games.

^Well you're doing better than me! I got VMWare and windows 98 se running, but it has no sound, and I have as of yet to get something installed on it. I think I still need to tweak some settings.
