I think Reflet had sent out a petition online for Ubisoft to release their code so that people could improve and build upon Petz. Has anyone heard news from that? I remember signing it, but then didn't hear anything about it. Wouldn't it be awesome if it worked? What do you think would be done with the game?

That would be amazing if the code was released. So much could be done with the game. I hope they release it.

I think it could definitely open up a lot of new possibilities when it comes to modding and generally understanding the game. It would be awesome! Unfortunately, I don't think it's likely. They don't especially seem to care about the Petz community as dedicated fans and they haven't even re-released the games. Holding onto the code is probably neutral to them and it wouldn't hurt them to release it (if they can) but it seems easy for bigger companies to think that they *could* profit from it in the future and hold onto it, even if they never actually do anything.

I signed this petition too when I first saw it but I'm not very hopeful It would be amazing if we could get the source code released. If I recall correctly there was a wishlist request on GOG.com asking for a Petz re-release ages ago. Nothing happened. It is disheartening, especially seeing my other favourite old game Creatures got a re-release.
EDIT: If Ubisoft is silent, maybe one of the original developers for PF Magic has access to old code. I wonder if contacting them is worth a shot? Andrew Stern is listed on linkedin.

Yeah, I did my part and signed the petition, filling it all out. I even wrote a long ramble about what I'd like to see done with Petz if the code could ever be obtained. I originally wrote it a long time ago but updated it a bit recently. If anyone is interesting my daydreams for petz, I could put it on my website. But sadly, it seems that Ubi Soft doesn't care about us one way or the other, so they probably won't release the code. I'm not hopeful, but I'll still do my part and join any collective voice we as a community have for trying to get the code.
Oh, Creatures got a re-release? I really liked that game too! Is Creatures now downloadable or buyable somewhere? I'd love to have it again as well.
But Petz will always be my absolute favorite, so I'll be voting for it's re-release too. Like I said, I'll do my part for anything for the PC.

The one issue I can see with this is if the devs don't have the rights to the code, if they sold it to Ubisoft. Hasn't anyone tried reaching out to them before? It could definitely be worth a shot, I'm sure it doesn't hurt to ask. Oh, Creatures got a re-release? I really liked that game too! Is Creatures now downloadable or buyable somewhere? I'd love to have it again as well. It did! I think it's on Steam and GOG or something?

I'm not sure if anyone has ever reached out before. I'm much too shy, lol Oh, Creatures got a re-release? I really liked that game too! Is Creatures now downloadable or buyable somewhere? I already made an account on GOG just to vote for Petz, now I just have to find Creatures and get it. It would be fun to play that game again!
But, back on topic, I think we should try everything, no matter how remote the chances are, to try to get the source code for Petz. Ya never know what might work. It can't hurt to try!

I think Linkedin might be the best and least creepy way to get in touch. I'd do it but I don't have an account and it might seem spammy if an empty, brand new account messaged him. Someone should try, though -- if they need help figuring out what to say, I can try to help.

I seem to remember pinto reached out to a group of former PF Magic employees a few years ago, and they didn't have the source code anymore. So if it's still out there, it's probably at Ubisoft.

I did talk to them a few years ago / was added to an alumni group on facebook when I was trying to expand the color palette! I believe a few of them did have it but legally could not release it to us since it is ubisoft's property and they have a weird vice grip on it. I have a friend who works for Ubisoft and worked on the last Assassin's Creed game, he did attempt to ask after it for me and was told no.

I wonder if they'd be able to give some tips/pointers even if they can't release the code? I guess that would also depend on whatever they signed when PF Magic sold to Ubisoft but it might be easier for them to do. :\

Ooh I didn't know there was a petition to release the code from Ubisoft. I'm assuming they don't have much incentive to release it, since they "bought it" and it likely has some value in their eyes still.
I wonder if they would ever release it for a certain dollar amount?
We could do a go-fund-me or something that shows them that we're serious. Or that they should re-release it officially for commercial reasons because it might actually sell? Not sure on any of these ideas though.

I'd certainly donate to the cause if that might persuade them! Companies are all about making money so that might work better than just asking them to hand it over. XD
