I often see hex archives on people's sites and I'm really curious about them. What do the different availabilities mean? How do people request, do they usually trade or just request? What are they used for (besides showcasing the hexed pets people have made)? I'm not looking at any in particular, I'm just curious because this is an aspect of sites I've realised I don't really know much about!

I think it might differ for different archives! I think the main idea is to showcase what people have hexed, or what their skill level is at, so they can offer trades or gifts and show people what they can offer, you know?
But some are also offering to hex customs, if people are interested in submitting an application or trade. The different availability levels are usually explained on each archive. Mine, for example, has a breakdown of what means what, so people know how to apply.
There's often times forms you can fill out too, which answers the 'how do you apply' question!
So yeah! Some people will accept just applications, but I think most people like a trade. Again, depends on the person! ^^ Was that any help at all? I feel like I basically just confirmed a lot of what you said, but in using a lot more words. x'DD

Thanks for explaining! That's a really awesome idea. I don't have anything to trade so I haven't submitted any requests but I really enjoy looking at people's archives (yours included) and seeing all the impressive things they've made. xD

Some people also like bred Petz! I wouldn't mind trading for bred Petz, personally! I'm also not too picky about giving out hexies, so it's not too hard to get one from me! xD

What do the different availabilities mean? This really varies from archive to archive! A lot of the time, you'll find a brief explanation of what the different availabilities mean on the archive's home page. How do people request, do they usually trade or just request? This, again, totally depends on the person. Some hexers prefer to only do trades for other hexed petz, some hexers are willing to just give hexies away when they're requetsed. When you're not sure, just shoot the person an email to ask! (: For what it's worth, I am picky with some files, but for most of them, I'm happy to trade for all sorts of things hahaha - sometimes just a thank you is plenty! What are they used for (besides showcasing the hexed pets people have made)? It's also kind of like a catalogue for people to browse when you're looking to offer something! I also use mine as a reference tool, to quickly see what I've done before/what variations are taken/etc.

Thanks for explaining it! I'm glad not everyone asks for hexies in return, because while I'll probably get more into breeding in the near future, getting the hang of hexing will probably take me forever xD
