Hi all, I recently just installed Petz 4 on my computer that has Windows 10, everything worked fine (except I have to keep the Petz sounds off or it freezes up and I have to close it). Then this morning I installed a Windows 10 update and when I opened Petz 4, it asked for a serial number for Dogz 4 (I have both Dogz and Catz 4 installed). I just hit exit and it opened up fine. However, when I brought out a couple of my cats (1st generation from the Adoption Center plus their infant baby) some of their fur was discolored (not the baby's), a red color shown below). This seems to be happening only to my catz so far and only the 1st gens I think, not my dogz or 2nd gens. I tried just reinstalling Dogz and Catz 4 to see if it would fix the fur color (maybe fur texture files had been deleted or something) and that seemed to fix the serial number problem but thos ![]() e specific catz that were affected are still red. Are they stuck that color now or can they be fixed or do I just have to replace them with new ones from the AC? Also, where can I find my Adopted Petz files? I found the Adopted Petz folder under the PF Magic folder and there's nothing in there. I even tried to see if there were hidden files, but none showed up. The catz affected are a B+W Shorthair, Maine Coon and a dark brown Siamese (not the cream color). As for Petz 5, I tried installing it, but it won't open. It starts to load then just stops. So I tried uninstalling it, but the InstallShield wizard to uninstall the program freezes up so I can't uninstall it either. Help! Thanks so much for your advice and help! Edit: How do I post a photo on here? Edit 2: I added photos of the cats affected.

Hi! I upload pics to imgur to post them here. As for the issues, have you tried installing petz somewhere other than program files? Sometimes that fixes things!

Thanks! I will try that! But are my cats stuck that red color (see pics in original post) or will that possibly be fixed if I install in somewhere other than program files? And Why can't I find my Adopted Petz files?

I would suggest first reinstalling the game in a location other than Program Files, as Rho suggested, and then see if that fixes any issues you are having.
Newer operating systems such as windows 8 and 10 seem to have a lot of issues when installing older games into Program Files. One of the most common places people like to install the petz games is in My Documents. It’ll also help to check your game’s compatibility settings, by right clicking on the game icon/shortcut and selecting Properties and choosing the Compatibility tab and setting it to Windows XP. It might also be on that same tab but it’s strongly suggested to also have it set to run as administrator, too.

I will try that. But how do I move my Petz to the new folder if I can't find the files? I don't see them in the Adopted Petz folder.

Try doing a file search for one of your pets and see if that locates them?
As for the red colour, maybe there is something else graphically going on but I just wondered if maybe there is a paint can just off to one side in a playscene so you can't see it but they are knocking into it painting themselves red? Try bringing out the pet and then going to Petz>Restore Original colours and select the pet name and if that doesn't work then something else is going on.

If you've uninstalled the game, and reinstalled it, the .pet files may just be gone. But try this before giving up. Show hidden files and folders. See the instructions from Microsoft here. Then search for *.pet in file explorer. Make sure you put in the asterisk! Also, did you try installing Petza yet? That makes a world of difference in windows 10. I agree with Catbaloo, make sure you double check for a paint can on the redness. ;-)

Catbaloo,
THANK YOU SO MUCH! The Restore Petz worked! I was so bummed I might have to replace my 1st gens that had the red on them! I forgot about the Paint can! In my defense, I haven't played this game in over 10 years lol
Stancymckatt,
I tried searching just for *.pet files and it found none as well as tried searching for a specific pet name. Not sure how the game can use the files if the system can't find the files. I do have the option to show hidden files, folders, etc checked. I tried searching for the files before I reinstalled the game and no luck there either. Also, for some reason, my Returned Petz folder is missing and I get an error message when I try to return a pet.
I have not tried installing PetzA. Can you have a litter (multiple babies) in Petz 4 with PetzA?

Sorry, this is a spam post by me as I'm not sure how to help with the missing pet files...but I have to say, the "paint can mystery" made me laugh. xDD As if you didn't have enough problems...I just imagine your Catz are running off, coming back red, and being all "HEY HEY, LOOK AT ME, I'M RED NOW! " and you're just freaking out and assuming the worst. xDD Nice of them to play with the paint can at a time like this LOL! Good luck with this issue though, I hope you can solve it! Petz is working flawlessly for me on my Windows 10 computer, so I know it's possible. I just never had this issue myself, so I wouldn't know how to fix it!

I have not tried installing PetzA. Can you have a litter (multiple babies) in Petz 4 with PetzA? Not sure how to help you about the other issues, hopefully someone else will know how to figure it out, but litters is a Petz 5-only feature. PetzA won’t change that, but it can make the process of one baby at a time faster with instant births.

Can you have a litter (multiple babies) in Petz 4 with PetzA? Wild Idea. Have you tried manually makeing a Returned Petz folder? If it's there, but hidden, it won't let you make the folder. Have you tried looking in C:\Program Files (x86)\PF.Magic\Petz 4\Adopted Petz OR C:\Program Files (x86)\PF.Magic\Petz 4\Returned Petz The files are there somewhere otherwise it wouldn't work... The hard part is finding them. I'll keep thinking on it. Does the account you're using to search for the pet files have Administrator Privileges? Windows is funny about that.

Stancymckatt,
I looked in the Adopted Petz file. It is showing "This folder is empty". I tried creating the "Returned Petz" folder as you suggested and that worked! However, when I went to the Returned Petz folder I just created to see if the pet file I just returned was there, it said "This folder is empty" as well.
Also, for those of you who are running Petz 4 on Windows 10 with and without PetzA, can you use the Pet Sounds under options? I have to turn the pet sounds off under options or Petz 4 will freeze up on me. Not currently using PetzA but thinking about downloading it.

Likely the original Returned Petz folder is still hiding elsewhere. Have you tried looking in this thread? windows7,vista, & petz? I know it's not aimed at Windows 10, but it might help you out.

Kel,
THANK YOU! That worked and I found both my Adopted Petz folder (and pet files) and the original Returned Petz folder with the returned pet file!
Now, would it be better to save my pet files then uninstall Petz 4 and re-install it under My Documents and put the pet files back in the new Adopted Petz folder?

I’m glad that helped! ^_^
And yes, I would highly recommend doing it that way. Make sure your petz are in a safe spot away from the petz folders before uninstalling.
