I've never seen this feature on any other forum before. What the heck is karma? Why do some people have negative karma and positive karma?

Karma is a reward system built into proboards (although it's possible to opt out of the feature). When you exalt somebody (+1), it's to reward them for a job well done or for being a good member or something along those lines. When you smite somebody (-1), it's when a member does something not desirable or bad.
The karma system can be easily abused, but the admin is able to see who exalts/smites who at any given time so we try to keep on top of that in cases of obvious abuse.

Yeah, in a lot of cases I find the reward system of proboards kind of pointless, but I guess I can understand it for a website like this. Some people have rules based around karma, like for hexing and adopting and such.
