Unless I'm missing a crucial point you should be able to just set the clock for the right time and play as normal. I left the game for a while when XP sp2 killed the sound but I still have my old dogz/catz and they worked just fine when I came back to the game.
They don't gather neglect from not playing at all, only if you open up the game and play with a few of the pets ignoring the rest, those would then gather neglect.

I'd suggest you make a new folder out of petz, once you have them safly out ofthe game then fix your clock, then re add your petz into the adoption folder.. If you go to the petz help thread it will tell you where to find the folders your files are saved in =3
Its always best anyway to keep a copy of your petz in a folder (not in game), just in case you ever get a corrupt pet thats to difficult to fix.
