I would chose the significant other.
If I was with someone for years and year, and then they did something my family didn't like, I would stand by them and stand up for them.
Yet on the other hand, if my family hated someone I had been dating only a few days, I would still stick by them, because obviously I would barely know the person, let alone my own family.
Now if they didn't like my family, and I needed to pick, well... :/ I don't have much family as is, and the ones I have around are my immediate family. Which of who are pretty selfish, and don't really want to be around each other anyways, so it'd be pretty easy. xD
Just my thoughts. Blood may be thicker than water, but blood dries and is always there, yet water evaporates and is gone forever. YAY For pointless, unmaking sense thoughts! WOO!

Significant other.
I love parts of my family, but I feel like one of the central points of life is branching off to find your mate and starting your *own* way of life and family (whether it's just the two of you as a family, or you two and your children/pets, etc.)
Some people put their parent(s) before their loved one, and I've always felt this was a bit of a smothering kind of way to live life, choosing (say) your mother over your wife.

Honestly, I'd choose my family, simply because having a "relationship" isn't really that big of a goal for me, and truthfully I'd rather not...so that said, if I ever did, I probably wouldn't really be that into it anyhow. If that makes sense...x]

Verrrry tough choice, since I love my mother so much I cannot explain it. But... Jono comes first. He's my future, not to sound harsh. He'll be there with me when/if we have children, and he'll potentially be there with me to old age. So it would have to be him.

I don't have/never had a significant other but.
my family means so much to me I don't know what I'd do without them. I'd prolly be torn in two if I had to make that choice and I hope I never ever will.

I'd choose significant other.
My reason?
My family are all jerks. ¬____¬;;

I've had to make this choice before... and my answer is still the same. Significant other. Even though it blew up in my face last time... I still know that I'm too devoted to the person I love to ever choose my family over them (I say them because I've fallen in love and had my heart broken... several times in the last year).

In this day with divorce so common, plus the many boyfriends I've had over the years; I've found that significant others will come and go, but family is forever, and knows you better than any other person really can.

I chose significant other. However, it depends on how long you've been seeing each other, like Midnightwolf said. If you'd only been together a few days or weeks, I can see choosing your family over your SO. But if you'd been together for years, I would definitely choose my SO, & I have in the past. Most of the time, your family is gonna get over it, & either accept it, or try to get along with them...if they really want you in their lives anyway.

As much as I love my family, my significant other wins. It's too personal to go into, but we have been through a lot together over the years, and mended many wounds that otherwise would have stayed open.

I chose not to vote, as depending on the situation I would choose either my family or my significant other. :\ Everything is determined by circumstance.

I agree with that, even though I lack a significant other and my family really means the world to me. Personally I must admit I also think that whomever puts you in that situation (whichever side it may be) is doing something very wrong.
