This isn't to say that any of these movies are necessarily bad, but that they received more hype and/or recognition than they deserved.
Anywho ... I purchased Labyrinth for about $4.99 recently for my PSP. It's not as good as I remember. To be honest, it's bad. Its difficult to actually sit through. Of coarse the parts with David Bowie are fun, but the large majority of the puppet characters are hideous and hard to look directly at. I thought the whole thing was terrible, and I don't rightly know why everyone holds it to such high esteem. P: Childhood nostalgia, maybe?
I'm a Disney freak. I am. But Fantasia ... I appreciate what Walt was trying to do, but the animation itself is mostly quite poor (in my opinion) and the whole overall thing is mind numbingly boring. Which is odd, because many people choose to regard it as an undeniable masterpiece. I rather liked Fantasia 2000, though.
I really enjoy the Nightmare Before Christmas, and I do think it was excellent, but to an extent. For one, I think there's way, way too much merchandise for it. I can't honestly imagine it being someone's favorite movie *of all time*, although many people claim it to be. I personally find afew of the characters and the setting itself to be quite disturbing. Maybe I'm a wuss, though.
The Wizard of Oz and Forrest Gump I can't complain about. I rather like them both. I'm sure I've sat through them both atleast 20 times each in the coarse of my lifetime.
Just for future reference, I never saw or even heard much of 2001: A Space Odyssey, but it's on nearly every overrated movie listing.

^Yay for PSPs Oh god I can't stand Labyrinth; I didn't see why everyone was like OH MY GOD BEST MOVIE EVERRR. I was disturbed by how tight Bowie's pants were and what they showed off >> [cough] And I loved Nightmare :[ It's ONE of my favorite movies ever... but then I think I'm just weird and like creepy stuff that scared the hell out of me when I was... 6 xD The only thing I know about A Space Odyssey is that it was a list of the most inaccurate movies of all time, rofl. But... I never saw it either rofl.

The Wizard of Oz makes me want to puke (just my personal taste -- not that of puke but... well you understand what I mean... I hope, haha ). Never seen Labyrinth of The Nightmare... so I'm a bit biased here with my answer -- I hate the Wizard whole-heartedly though.

DARK KNIGHT.
The hype over that movie was insane.. I love super hero movies, even a lot of them that most people don't like, and I was bored. It was so awkward.. I'm convinced the hype was because of Heath Ledger's death. I loved him in other movies but, not a fan of this one.
I didn't like Wizard of Oz much either XD It bothers me... XD

I knew someone would ask. I don't know that anyone actually considers the Twilight movie to be monumental or amazing or a masterpiece. Actually, I can't really think of /anybody/ who's reviewed it more than mediocre at best ... As I recall, it's Rotten Tomatoes weighted average was something like a 5.5/10. So no. I definitely wouldn't see how it would qualify as overrated.
The books, maybe. The movie no.
That's probably a good one. I did really enjoy the Dark Knight, but it's true that it got a pretty exaggerated/overzealous reception.
I read through afew overrated movie listings just to be sure I wasn't forgetting anything major. That one wasn't mentioned on any that I went over and thus slipped my mind. P:

All my friends always try to get me to watch 2001: A Space Odyssey... I'm asleep within the first ten minutes. I've never stayed awake long enough to find out why everyone's so excited..

Honestly, none of the above.
For their time, they were amazing movies. So saying that "in the now/present day" they are crap or not as good simply isn't fair. Some of the most epic movies of today, which the majority likes, will one day be looked down on as crap or "overrated".
In my opinion, overrated movies are ones which there was HUGE buzz around them (twilight, harry potter, lord of the rings) but once you watched them, they weren't quite as good as the hype made them out to be. From the hype, Twilight was the biggest overrated film in my books as of late, but I never went into it expecting much (I hated the books).
The only one from the list I didn't like is Wizard of Oz - but that wasn't because it was overrated, simply because I didn't like the characters and the scripts.

I agree with Ela, I couldn't pick any of those. I liked several of the movies on that list (c'mon, Wizard of Oz had giant lollipops! XD), especially Nightmare Before Christmas. I also agree that movies like Twilight and Harry Potter, surrounded by so much hype and excitement, deserve more to be categorized as "overrated" simply because they disappointed. I stopped watching the HP movies - I'm a HUGE fan of the books and the movies were absolutely horrid, to say the least. Twilight to me just seems like vampires watered-down...I love vampires, but if I want a story about them I'll go and read Anne Rice or watch the Lost Boys. Vampires are bloody, sadistic and beautiful and should not be fallen in love with. XD </end rant>

The only one from the list I didn't like is Wizard of Oz - but that wasn't because it was overrated, simply because I didn't like the characters and the scripts. ... Yeah. This is what I don't understand. There were really very few people knowledgeable in the field of film who rated the Twilight movie (as I said before) more than mediocre. For the most part, it received very poor reviews. How does that make it overrated? Now the books received alot of esteem and an outpouring of fans. But we're not talking about the book. We're talking about the film. Besides all that, I really feel that any positive reception from fans is more or less due solely from the book's fandom. And yeah. *I* personally love The Wizard of Oz and Nightmare Before Christmas, and nowhere did I shoot down the work of earlier films just because they were outdated. Many of these I include simply because they appeared numerous times on overrated film listings. I didn't overanalyze. I just put them down. I think good films should stand the test of time, hopefully, and still remain watchable today. My own personal opinion is that Alfred Hitchcock films (not his television series) are vastly overrated and are made out to be something they're not? I just feel that people are sentimental from having viewed them growing up, and many are TOLD that these films are good (or bad) and thus develop a preexisting opinion without even having taken in the films themselves. In much of the same way everyone considers Twilight to be garbage and tortuous just because everyone around them makes it and it's fans out to be crap. They pick up the book having heard it'll "Burn your eyes out! It's impossible to get past the first page!" and thus they pick it up, read the first page, and insist it's far, far too awful to continue. They literally laughed the entire time they skimmed the page. ... Which is seriously one of the most moronic things I've ever heard. And I keep hearing it day, after day, after day. That's just me, though.

The rating that "knowledgeable film folk" doesn't impact the general hype surrounding a film. Just because critics give poor ratings doesn't mean that the overall rating from the general public agrees. Its the hype created by the general public that, to me, builds up the movie and (in my opinion) is what makes or breaks the movie in terms of being overrated. If the general public hypes a movie up to be amazing - but I find it is not - then that to me is overrated.
The reason I use Twilight as an example is because I read the first book before it was "well known" and full of insane fans. I found the book to be crap, poorly written, and the characters to be very flat.
I find twilight to be "garbage" not because of a ripple effect, but because I formulated that opinion on my own, based from what I read before anyone told me about "how amazing it is!!!!!!111".
I fully understand and respect your opinions (as well as others'). I just feel that old movies made 30 + years ago will always loose some "pazazz" and after time passes, will be seen as overrated - especially by individuals who never grew up in that era (and thus have grown to love classics).
Off topic, but old movies to me are by far the best movies out there. Much more originality to them.

^ I see where you're coming from. Although I can't help but think the originality that old films possess is unavoidable. When you're the first of something, it's impossible not to be original. There's nothing to base it off of, compare it to, or to work from. Or to rip from, for that matter. And I do think that not only do writers and directors sometimes base or steal a bit subconsciously, but it's also inevitable that (when so many films have already been made) they'll be doing something that's already been done before atleast to *some* degree.

I won't even go into my whole belief..since most know it already..but yes. And while I love the Oz books, the movie is just..well, I spent a good chunk of my life in Kansas. You get really sick of it really fast.
