There's some old 90s/early 00s games I want to play but can't get them to run properly on Windows 10, not even with compatibility mode enabled.
1. I know they can be played through a Windows XP (or so) Virtual Box, but does anyone have a very simple, "explain this to a child" type tutorial? I've never done this before so I'm kind of intimidated.
2. I've seen a couple of installers for old games that don't require you to use a virtual machine with an older operating system, because they come bundled with... something or other. What is this? How do you do this? I feel like it would make it a lot easier to play old games.
Thank you! I'm posting here since hopefully there's people around who know this kind of thing.

Spam post here...but I'd very much like to know too!! I'm a bit silly, and like to 'revisit' some of the games I played as a kid...like the first ever computer game I ever got to pick myself and buy, a little pet shop game. There's nothing to really do on these old games, it's mostly just a nostalgia trip for me...but I've been unable to visit them since upgrading to Windows 10 and I miss seeing them!!

Some games that used security software on the disc like Securom will no longer run on Windows 10 machines as Microsoft has disabled these security features from running. Often you can install the game but when it comes to playing it Windows will stop the exe file from performing this security check and therefore stops the game from running without any error message. It just won't start up, even though you are using the legitimate CD/DVD. There are ways of replacing this file after install but that is beyond the scope of what we are allowed to talk about on Proboards.
You're best off searching for each individual game for tips on how to get them running on Win 10 as some might be better off using DOS box or a virtual machine while some might just need some tweaks to files. Have a look to see if they are for sale on GoG and if so read the reviews and the forums to find out how best to get it running. Unless it's something not very well know. Then you're probably best off using a virtual machine.
I haven't used Virtual Box so I don't know the exact steps for that one. On my old computer I used VMware Player. It seemed pretty straight forward to set up from what I can remember. Install program. Start a new profile and have your copy of XP or 98SE etc. to hand so you can install it into that profile. You then treat the profile as if it is a computer and start it up and shut it down just like you would normally do with XP and install your games through that.

Catbaloo, you're right, it's DOSBox I was thinking of. I usually look up tips on playing individual games, especially since in some cases people have made patches that make them run on newer machines. Unfortunately, this isn't a whole lot of help when you're trying to play obscure games Thank you for the advice!
CatCreature, it usually helps to run the games in compatibility mode and to limit things like frame rate and core usage. I can help you if you want. I've also had some good luck searching for specific games, because if they have a big/dedicated enough community around them, the odds are people have tried to get them to work on recent systems. A while back, I wanted to play Black & White again and finding a fan site really helped. Some things still won't work or don't work properly :/ ECRose offered to help me set up a virtual machine, after I learn how, I can teach you as well! It sounds super clunky but it seems like it's the only option for some games.

If I can get my computer back and working, I may have to take you up on that xD My temporary setup is so uncomfortable and there's little privacy here, which means I can't focus very well. My sister was able to get Black and White running on her Windows 10 computer...she loves that game. xD I -feel- like hers is Black and White 2? I can't remember...we've had that old game forever. She got a lot further than I had the patience to xDD

If it makes you feel better, I got stuck at some point because I'm bad at it ahahha.
