So yesterday my fiance and I were talking about old computer games we used to love back in the day. To get an idea of what "back in the day" for us means is when our families got their first computers. He's 30 and I'm 29 and both of us got our first computers around 1996-1997. I was telling him all about this game where you could have dogz and catz and you could breed them to have puppies and there were tons of websites to download custom breeds. I named off names of some of the petz I truly loved the most. Its amazing how I can remember some of their names. I must have had like 50 petz. For some reason you really get attached to these little things.
I was first introduced to Dogz in 1995 because my cousin's had the game. I thought it was the coolest thing ever.
My first Petz game I ever got for myself was Dogz 3 in 1998. I was obsessed with it. Having puppies and playing with them, for such a simple game there's so much to do. I met a girl in dance class who happened to have Catz 3 so we exchanged games for the week and both ended up with Petz. We became good friends because of Petz 3. She's still one of my best friends 17 years later.
The next year rolled around and I got Dogz 4, I've always been a Dogz person, if I ended up getting a hold of Catz I'd install it too but I'm a dog person. This is when I got into downloading breeds and toys and anything I could get my hands on. I remember when the Christmas pack came out with the snow backgorund, my computer only connected to the internet at 11bps. I spent hours and hours downloading that new play place for my petz. I fell asleep at my computer desk, woke up the next morning and it still wasn't finished downloading. I know I considered making a Petz website but I don't think I ever did. I did have one of the stuffed animals of Petz they made, the ones that came with food and water bowl with a little brush and a toy. I had the cat. I still know where it is too.
In 2002 when Petz 5 came out I bought the game. I never played it that much. It loaded REALLY slowly...like start the game, go make dinner and come back to it, slow. I hated the mini games and the lack of a toy closet. I never did understand the mini games. I did like the better graphics, the weather and the day/night feature. I'll give the game credit for that. Other than the fact that my computer at the time refused to play it without being laggy, I had just turned 16 when it came out. I had discovered boys. I didn't have time to play with a silly puppy and kitty game. Plus if I was playing a computer game it was usually The Sims. Fun fact, I still play The Sims and have almost every expansion pack ever.
Fast forward 13 years to yesterday, I've graduated high school and got a degree, I'm like a real grown up . I get this huge desire to relive this game. I've been in a retro gaming mood for the last few weeks. So as soon as I could I started scouring the internet trying to figure out if this game would even play on Windows 7. I check Amazon, I check eBay but wasn't willing to shell out money for a game I already own. I just don't know where the discs are. I live in Florida now and they're somewhere in Missouri. I hit up old Petz sites and most of them have long closed. Then I find one that shows you how to get Petz 4 with the PetzA thing. So I had little faith that this was going to work because usually when I try that kind of stuff I fail but low and behold I get my game up and running with no problems. Now I was thinking I'd play it for a few minutes, relive some old memories and be done...but nope, I got the Petz bug, it bit just like it did in 1998. All I want to do is play it. When I'm not playing I'm thinking about playing. So I end up getting Petz 5 and Babyz as well.
The best part is that it doesn't take forever to load anymore, even Petz 5 loads in just a few seconds and runs smooth. I can only get the voice recognition to work about half the time but to be honest I never used that feature anyway. I can run Petz 4, 5 and Babyz all at the same time with my duel screen monitors. I've downloaded some custom breeds, made tons of puppies that look like my real dogs and I'm just having a blast. At 29 this is just as fun as when I was 12 and its actually even better. With PetzA I can do in 2 minutes what it took me weeks to do before. Make babies instantly. Playing with genetics is so much fun. I'm working on these chihuahua/dalmatian mixes and breeding down in size. So spotty chihuahuas. My profile picture is one of my early generations...I'm still working on getting the spots to show up while still resembling a chihuahua. When I was younger I'd just change the date on the computer to get a puppy born faster but nothing could speed up the breeding process.
So in all honesty the thing that surprises me the most is that people are still playing this game. I know that Ubi Soft has put out those dumb DS games and I've even been duped into buying one because I thought it would be like the old game...boy was I mistaken. (I miss PF Magic) I just never imagined that 20 years later people would still be playing this game. Installing the game made me laugh, its been so long since a software install told me to close all programs before running the install. haha...I don't think that's necessary anymore. Even when you take photos of Petz it asks if you're sure you want to save a file because its 30k of disk space...haha!! I have pictures that are 24mb on my computer...I'm not too worried about 30k. I love old technology.
So anyway to wrap this up. I'm glad I found this forum I'm glad its still somewhat active. All this makes me very happy and I can't wait to talk to all of you. Now I gotta make up for all that lost time I spent growing up so I can revert to my childhood.
Just to let you know I have Petz 4 and 5 right now. I spend most of my time playing 4 because I really hate those dumb mini games, I still don't understand them and I need ALL the toys. So in the debate over 4 or 5 I'm a 4 person but I do love being able to have litters. Has anyone been able to make a patch to revert petz from 5 to 4? I've tried messing with files hoping for an easy fix but with no luck. I have Babyz too...its so much more fun than it was when I was 13, I have no idea why, I guess I have baby fever. haha Does anyone play that anymore? Most of the sites and forums for that look pretty dead.
