"Mandi?" Si, senior. "Juan encontrado dead conejo, conejito in box." The dead rabbit? Was it an attack or run over? "Nooo ... conejito. Truck run over conejo." Okai. I'll come collect the bunnies. How many? "Si, mucho gracias. Tres." So, Wednesday of last week, one of the guys from the dairy a few miles out called us at seven at night to ask me to come up and gather three bunnies they located nearby an adult bunnies corpse. She was still fresh, and the little ones had been tucked between the haybales. The guy that collected them, Juan, managed to keep them in an enormous box with a butt-ton of shop paper towels in it. They're maybe three to four weeks old, and I was, honestly, expecting the worst seeing as the dairy is pretty big and cows aren't potty trained. They're still small enough to fit in my palm, and between my fiance and I, they've been adequately setup in a makeshift 'crib' from a turned over bottomless crate lined with plastic, a bed sheet, a fleece throw, and a towel. They're still on kitten milk (with probiotic and echinacea) but they enjoy nibbling on the provided alfalfa. (: It'll be winter soon, so by spring, I hope to either release them or take them to the zoo for a friendlier co-existence with people and animals. I figured I share them with everyone, because well... bunnies. But this is what I do on a day-to-day basis. I've had dogs, injured snakes, sick cats, and currently a growing number of praying mantises keeping warm in our cool fall and upcoming chilly winter. One is a keeper, seeing as she only has one arm to hunt with.

They're really cute little things. It's lucky they were found and had someone who could come and take care of them!

I have a deermouse with half a tail that my cat nearly killed. He's little, and his tail healed up well. His release is for Late April or early May. He's my third one, first one my kitten was toying with had some punctures and a ticked ear, but it healed up and we let it go in June. Second was an adult my dog grabbed and it had far too severe injuries to recover from, but he passed peacefully in the warmth of my hand after two and a half days of syringe feeding and antibiotic for its wounds. We had a bullsnake, too, that had suffered a few fire ant bites. He was released a little after the first mouse. ^^ I even have a wolf spider. xD;;

Those baby bunnies are so cute! I've always loved finding wild baby bunnies in the spring and late summer. If it weren't for winter coming, I'm sure they would be able to go out on their own in a few weeks. Good luck raising them! Also, you might want to be careful when handling deer mice. They are known to carry the hantavirus, which can be transferred to humans. I know there are a lot of other animals that can spread disease too, but this one is just really sticking in my mind for some reason.

It's common in adult wild mice, babies are usually too young to have disease. Not saying it isn't possible, anything is. But less likely. Besides! Outside of the bunnies and mantis, I wear medical gloves for the injured and cleaning habitats - but I don't make it habit to domesticate any of them. xD; Even the bunnies are still feral, as they should be. :D

Never thought of it that way. I always expected the babies to have what the parents have. Of course, as long as your safety and cleaning habits are good, there shouldn't be too much to worry about Sorry if I'm sounding a bit like a critic

No, not at all! You're intelligently cautious and expressing concern for ones safety, it's a good thing to always be sure! Personally, when I moved out to live with my guy, I hadn't expected to become the towns new wildlife rehabilitation center! xD So the first animal I was given, I was ill-prepared for at ten at night. Thankfully! It was only a kitten, about five to six weeks old that its mother abandoned because it had pneumonia - it survived, and is now my indoor/outdoor pain in the butt I affectionately named "Miles" (: After that, I made it a point to stock up on various medicines, protection, and crates of all sizes. lol

I gets second thoughts on my word choices a lot, so that's a relief. It's funny how little kitty souls like Miles can change your life so much.
