@tofupup omg I didn't know you were on the necropsy page!! The pyometra one was the most interesting necropsy I've seen so far. Personally I'm not overly into spaying as I'm pretty sure pyometra is rare overall in rats. I think it's a huge surgery for such a little rat, I wouldn't do it unless it was an emergency with birthing. Plus I also breed rats so it might make it REALLY hard to make progress if they can't breed Each to their own with their decisions though, all have their pros and cons!

Haha, yes, animal medicine interests me intensely. I'm a veterinary technician at a small animal practice, we rarely see exotics if ever, but I of course share my love for medical tid bits in exotic animals as well as cats and dogs! I'm with you on the spaying of rats, a very invasive surgery for such a small creature when it is not of course in an emergency situation. Neutering for males, a bit less invasive of course, but still, the anesthetics are just such a risk. I know there are safer options over others, but still. I of course feel differently about spaying/neutering in cats and dogs and strongly encourage it, it is just so different though. Of course there is always a risk with anesthesia, but with cats and dogs at least you have pre-surgical bloodwork, IVs, etc. Lol - and yes, I believe that would serve quite difficult for you if your rats no longer had their reproductive parts! :x I agree too, to each their own decisions.
