I've been playing Soul Silver a lot since I've been laid up at home lol so yay Pokemon poll! Mine is gen 2. Johto ftw. :D Absolutely love the remakes. Crystal was my first Pokemon game. My dad got me a Game Boy Color for my birthday and it came bundled with it. It's always had a special place in my heart considering this was after my parents divorced and we moved to a different state.
My favorite gen 2 pokemon are these guys awe yea.

That's such a hard question but I think I'd have to say the first generation because that's where I got into Pokémon. My story is kinda like yours, my Dad bought me a Game Boy Colour and Pokémon Red one Xmas and that was it, I was hooked! I really liked the 2nd gen and enjoyed Silver and Crystal loads, but lost interest as the series went on. I feel it became over-complicated in some respects and the critter designs lost their originality

For voting sake, I will say generation 1. However, I have a hard time picking between Generation 1 and 2. I remember being a little kid and being completely in that time when pokemon was really a big thing. For my 5th birthday, I was given the special edition Pikachu gameboy and Pokemon Yellow.
I was varying young and where my parents and I were living, I didn't have friends. I watched the show and fell in love with the series. When I received the Yellow, I was absolutely ecstatic. The funny thing about the game was at that age, I was kinda refusing to learn to read still. So honestly, I never READ anything. Honestly, I don't think I finished that Yellow even if I DID have a team of level 100s. My imagination really soared with the game. I seriously would continue fighting Pokemon in the grass and imagining battles with my team. My team was all level 100s and I can still remember them. I had Pikachu, fearow, tentacruel, charizard, blastoise, and venusaur. I also remember my uncle beating me in the games since he had legendaries at his disposal, unlike me.
Sadly, I lost that Yellow years ago at a campground in the couch of my great grandma's camper that was destroyed. I did eventually get a new Pokemon Yellow and beat it on my old Pikachu gameboy.
I love Generation 2 because of the Pokemon and because of the Rival, Silver. I never beat my Crystal till many years later though. It originally didn't interest me as the first game did, except for Lugia. Lugia is my favorite legendary. I blame PokeSpecial's Silver though for most of my love for this generation. Special to note, I have a ポケットモンスター 銀 cartridge that I've beaten with memory of the english translation of the game. I seriously can't read anything in it xD!
Now, the reason I chose to vote for Generation 1 over 2 is not just because of my bigger experience. For a time being between the summer before 7th grade and all of the year my 8th grade was, I was a big into glitch pokemon and beta maps/items. I spent hours making logs of my experiences which have been long lost on dead laptops. While generation 2 had the lost safari map/beta maps and few beta pokemon AND few glitches, Generation 1 had so many more glitch pokemon.
Being that I spent so much more time on then a red rom and a yellow rom, I had an even bigger experience with generation 1.
Today, I still play at least ONE game of every generation. I also don't think I will ever stop no matter what goes on with either the creatures or plot lines. When I was little, my Yellow was there for me when I had no one else. Sure, it isn't a person but my imagination brought my team to life. They helped combat the loneliness I had as a small child and even to this age, my team in Black 2 keeps me company when I feel alone.
Sorry if that was a bit much for the board.
