EDIT/Would cat owners take a look at this, too and fill out the form, please? /EDITI'm actually just polling around, trying to get information and suggestions for prices, patterns and, funnily, dog sizes. I'm trying to sell dog sweaters on Etsy and I'm not sure how much interest there is for them, how much people are willing to pay and what sorts of interesting designs people might be interested in for their pets. I've only finished two dog sweaters so far. The first was crochet and was made way back when I first started crocheting as a serious hobby and the other is knitted and I'm much more proud of it. I've learned a lot about making garments (it's amazing how much knitting socks can teach you) since then and I know I can make more comfortable clothing now. Anyway, here is the knitted dog sweater. I'm working on another one now and am planning sweaters with color changes, motifs, longer sleeves, no sleeves, etc. So... what would you be willing to pay for a basic dog sweater like this? Images are linked to avoid page stretch From above: sphotos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/299484_10151455874238747_435706427_n.jpgA peek the side/bottom: sphotos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/554030_10151455946573747_1366011695_n.jpgSo if you don't mind, could you fill this out for me? Would you buy this? (please remember, this is as basic as it gets): If so, what would you be willing to pay? (ranges are fine): Would you pay extra for stripes, cables, etc?: Would you pay extra for motifs/appliques?: - What sort of extras would you be willing to pay for?: Would you pay extra for personalization? (names, initials, etc): --- If you have a dog, what size is he/she? (in or cm is fine) Neck - around base Chest - around thickest point Back - from base of neck to base of tail --- Would you be willing to wait on a custom order or would you prefer 'on the shelf', already finished sweaters?: Extras would range from 3 to 10 dollars depending on how complicated it is and how much material was used. Obviously, I would have to charge extra for things like expensive buttons or complicated color work. I want to get a good feel for dog sizes since they vary so much and since I'll end up using more yarn for big breeds and less for small breeds. If you aren't sure where to measure your dog, please refer to this website: www.myuptownpooch.com/measure_dogs.htmPlease be brutally honest with me. If you think this isn't worth the time or money, please let me know so I know to improve before I try to sell sweaters.

Since this is creativity related, I'm going to move it to the creativity corner, but then I'll fill out your questionaire. ^^
Would you buy this? Probably, it's hard to fit two of my dogs. If so, what would you be willing to pay? (ranges are fine): For our smaller dogs, somewhere in the $20 or less range. Would you pay extra for stripes, cables, etc?: That I don't know Would you pay extra for motifs/appliques?: Probably not - What sort of extras would you be willing to pay for?: Would you pay extra for personalization? (names, initials, etc): Yes --- If you have a dog, what size is he/she? Oh I don't know their sizes and I'm not at home, but my two hardest to fit are two pembroke corgis. They're smaller than the average, but just as long with good sized necks so it's hard to find properly fitting things sometimes. Neck - around base Chest - around thickest point Back - from base of neck to base of tail --- Would you be willing to wait on a custom order or would you prefer 'on the shelf', already finished sweaters?: For one of them I would really love a custom order, but if there were ones already ready to go, I'd be tempted to get those.

Oops. : x I wasn't sure which forum to put it in so I decided to pick the well... more General choice. XD
Thanks so much for filling this out! I wouldn't charge any more for a custom order as I would for an 'off the shelf' item of the same quality so it wouldn't be hard to make a properly fit sweater for your corgis. The only differences would be the wait while I made it and the fit.
I really appreciate the input. :3

I wouldn't mind waiting for a specific color/pattern on the sweater if it was the perfect one, if that helps any. My dogs are color coordinated, so I like to find all red things for Molly for instance.

i don't have any pets atm, so. i won't fill out the form.
but i don't think people realize how time consuming hand knitting is, & i think you should charge $20 AT THE MINIMUM. i'd lean more toward asking for anywhere between $40 & $50, honestly. & definitely have different prices for different sizes. like $20 should be for a toy dog, & go up $5 or $10 with each size up.
you don't want to sell yourself short!

Would you buy this? (please remember, this is as basic as it gets): Yes, it looks really good! If so, what would you be willing to pay? (ranges are fine):$25 - 30 for this and more for more detailed things. Would you pay extra for stripes, cables, etc?: Extra for Cables, buttons etc maybe a little bit extra for stripes. Would you pay extra for motifs/appliques?: Yes because they cost more than just yarn. - What sort of extras would you be willing to pay for?: Buttons, longer sleeves etc. Would you pay extra for personalization? (names, initials, etc): It would make sense but I probably wouldn't get it just because I would want the sweater to be wearable for more than one dog haha. --- If you have a dog, what size is he/she? (in or cm is fine) Neck - around base - 17in Chest - around thickest point 23in Back - from base of neck to base of tail 18in
She's a pug and a bit chubby as she recently got spayed - i'm working on it haha. --- Would you be willing to wait on a custom order or would you prefer 'on the shelf', already finished sweaters?: I kind of like both, if I needed something say for a present i'd want on the shelf but if it was just random and I wanted a really nice sweater I would get custom.
Hope that helps!

Thank you both for your input. : D
Jesi, I was looking at a $20 minimum anyway. I understand that a lot of people don't know how time consuming hand knitting is, so I'd like their input, too. Don't worry about not filling out the form. I'm happy for any input. : D

Would you buy this? (please remember, this is as basic as it gets): Yes. I have one for my Chihuahua actually If so, what would you be willing to pay? (ranges are fine): Anywhere in the 20$ or less range. Would you pay extra for stripes, cables, etc?: No probably not. But i understand how much more effort stripes are for hand knitting. I knit myself. Would you pay extra for motifs/appliques?: Depends on what it is. - What sort of extras would you be willing to pay for?: Rhinestones or fancy stuff like that. Patches/Iron on things. Would you pay extra for personalization? (names, initials, etc): Yes. ESPECIALLY if I know its hand knit. I've done some embroidering myself before... never again. lol I made personalized dog beds. ;_; i repeat. NEVER AGAIN. lol --- If you have a dog, what size is he/she? (in or cm is fine) If I had a tape measured I'd let ya know but idk otherwise. He's a rather big chihuahua tbh. He's a small/med when it comes to buying clothes or w/e at Petco/Petsmart Neck - around base Chest - around thickest point Back - from base of neck to base of tail --- Would you be willing to wait on a custom order or would you prefer 'on the shelf', already finished sweaters?: I'd more more willing to wait on a custom order personally but we live in a very "NOW" world and people like instant gratification as opposed to sitting around and waiting. However in doing so they forfeit quality.. for convenience. I on the other hand would wait knowing it's being hand knit and made just for him and personalized so it will be unique from the ones sitting on a petco shelf. PLUS it would fit better if I had to measure him for it. <3 You did a great job on that sweater. I love the hand knit sweaters. They are time consuming but they look amazing and some people truly appreciate a quality product such as that. Toby *my dog* has one just like it in brown and my grandmother added like a fur lined trim to it, its adorable!

Thank you, ashley. : D If you ever get around to measuring Toby, please let me know. I'm curious about what average dog sizes are so I can more confidently make ready-made, off the shelf items in a range of sizes. :3
Also, any cat owners, would you mind taking a look at this, too?

I'll fill this out for cats, because I've had several in the past (we only have one right now and he's outdoor, so I hope it's okay I still fill this out?)
Would you buy this? (please remember, this is as basic as it gets): Of course, it's so adorable <3 If so, what would you be willing to pay? (ranges are fine): I'd say perhaps around $30? Only because I image the smallest size you might do is for a toy dog, and that would be at least $20 and my cat is bigger than a Chihuahua Would you pay extra for stripes, cables, etc?: Yes, probably. I've never knitted but I imagine it's not easy and (though I don't know what cables are) they most likely cost extra so it's only fair! Would you pay extra for motifs/appliques?: Same applies as for above, it's only fair to compensate for what extra you spend on top of the yarn. - What sort of extras would you be willing to pay for?: Would you pay extra for personalization? (names, initials, etc): Yes, because I imagine embroidery must be difficult. --- If you have a dog, what size is he/she? I don't have a tape measure handy, but next time I'm downstairs I'll grab one and measure him. He's rather chubby though so I'm afraid he's not the best for an "average" Neck - around base Chest - around thickest point Back - from base of neck to base of tail --- Would you be willing to wait on a custom order or would you prefer 'on the shelf', already finished sweaters?: I wouldn't mind waiting on a custom, because it makes it much more special than off the self. However, if it was just to have around for current and/or future pets, then off the self would be fine to me c:

^ I imagined one of these on a hamster and then my brain exploded from cuteness. I'd buy one for my rats... but they'd eat it.

LOL. XD
If I ever made sweaters for hamsters or rats, I'd totally let you know. But uh... I wouldn't feel good about myself if I charged more than 8 dollars because of how small they'd be and how quickly I'd make them. XD

Would you buy this? (please remember, this is as basic as it gets): Absolutely! If so, what would you be willing to pay? (ranges are fine): Probably around the $30 range, but would be willing to pay upwards of $40 depending on the durability. Would you pay extra for stripes, cables, etc?: I would if I were to order such things! Would you pay extra for motifs/appliques?: Same as above! - What sort of extras would you be willing to pay for?: Lady bugs! Would you pay extra for personalization? (names, initials, etc): Absolutely! --- If you have a dog, what size is he/she? (in or cm is fine) Neck - around base Chest - around thickest point Back - from base of neck to base of tail I don't know the exact measurements my dog needs, but she's a Whippet X Rat Terrier mix, and when I buy her sweaters off the shelf from stores, I usually go for a medium-large (depending on the size difference). She has a wide chest being a whippet mix, and is a little on the chubby side --- Would you be willing to wait on a custom order or would you prefer 'on the shelf', already finished sweaters?: Yes! I have always wanted to get her a sweater with lady bugs on it (her name is Lady, and her nick-name is "Bugs"). Her leashes and collars are always pink so I would LOVE a pink sweater with a lady bug on the back and "Lady" printed somewhere on it xD Do you have an etsy account? Or somewhere where you have these to order already? I would seriously be interested in buying one. Her sweaters that I buy her never last more than one winter so I need another one soon since it will start to get cold within the next month or so (I'm in south Florida, so our winter doesn't start until like Nov/Dec lol).

Would you buy this? (please remember, this is as basic as it gets): yes If so, what would you be willing to pay? (ranges are fine): depending on size/durability/complexity any where up to $60 (I have a pretty big dog) Would you pay extra for stripes, cables, etc?: yes, Would you pay extra for motifs/appliques?: yes - What sort of extras would you be willing to pay for?: things that make it unique Would you pay extra for personalization? (names, initials, etc): yes --- If you have a dog, what size is he/she? (in or cm is fine) I have 2 dogs so I'll measure them both although neither is average sized Neck - around base 47cm 25cm Chest - around thickest point 72cm 42cm Back - from base of neck to base of tail 60cm 36cm --- Would you be willing to wait on a custom order or would you prefer 'on the shelf', already finished sweaters?: yes, assuming it was in some way unique,
