Okie-doke, just real quick:
I'm looking to purchase My Neighbor Totoro on DVD, but I've run into some confusing info. For the record, I've never actually seen the movie before, so I don't have alot to go on.
Anywho. There seems to be two different English releases. One is from Fox, and the other is Disney. Disney's English dub apparently features Dakota Fanning and her sister as the two main girls. ... That doesn't sound good.
But then again, I don't know, seeing as I've never gotten the chance to sit through the whole movie before. I more or less am looking to find out which version of this DVD I'm going to want to purchase.
I was rather hoping someone might know which dubbed version Cartoon Network has aired in the past? Although I can't imagine they'd have used Disney's.

The version I saw was on an old VHS and I'm almost positive it did not have Dakota fanning in it. It's not one of my favorites so I don't know the particulars :x. (It was dubbed in the 80ies the first time around. Soo... she wasn't born yet XD XD)
I'm reading some reviews on Amazon.com bashing the Disney release though.
One review
This is one of our all-time favorite movies. My kids grew up with the original VHS version. The three stars were given because this is NOT the same version that we remembered and although we love the movie, we hate this version. This version has different voices, some different music and even different spoken lines in some places. We were very disappointed with these changes. After doing some research, we realized our mistake. This DVD version is different because it was put out by Disney whereas the original was put out by Fox. Apparently, there are two versions of this movie and we prefer the Fox version much better. Even though the Disney version has the celebrity voices of Tim Daly and Dakota Fanning, it lacks the quirky joy of Hayao Miyazaki's original version. If you are a fan of the original english VHS version, be sure to look for the Fox version! Now we have to purchase the Fox version and find a way to sell the Disney version - Bummer.
Another Review......
While this is a wonderful story in its original form (the original english adaption), this version is awful! There are no sound effects for the cat bus, the actors' parts are wooden and all of the magic has been leached out by Disney. I am relieved I kept my vhs copy of this movie because I will not watch the Disney release again. If I had perhaps looked more carefully, I would have noticed that it was a remake. I simply did not imagine anyone would change something that was wonderful in the first place. Shame on Disney for butchering such a classic.
It seems like a lot of the reviewers felt the Fox VHS was better...

They did the same with the Akira re-release; they completely changed the dubbing and for the longest time I was wondering why the hell they would name a character "Canada." ...But I was wrong lol.
The Cartoon Network airing of it was the Disney version; I definitely recognized Dakota Fanning in that and was like wtf, haha.
Sometimes DVDs can have the dual track? If you're into Blu-Ray, that may have the original dub.

I'm still actually quite confused as to which I want. P:
For one, Amazon does have both versions available, but there are more than afew pros and cons. For example, I consistently heard very nice things about the Fox dub, and very few people prefer or recommend Disney's rendition. But unfortunately, Fox's version not only is Fullframe, but also does not include the original Japanese audio. Whereas Disney's DOES contain the Japanese audio and subtitles and is also in Widescreen. Which is very good.
Question is ... do I want to watch the 'good' dub in English solely, or the Japanese original solely? Because apparently I can't have both. Unless I buy both.

I suppose if you've never seen the Fox version.. it won't matter as much? XD If I was more of a fan of the movie I'd get both versions.
People get very passionate/weird when it comes to japanese/english translations and opinions are thrown around. Personally, I think you will enjoy the movie no matter which version you choose.

^ True enough! xD
I think I'll settle for Disney's. The Fox version is generally more expensive anyway.

Honestly, I don't mind the disney version. I thought the same thing when I first learned of Dakota Fanning voicing it, but it's not bad at all. Either way, I like Totoro.

I have only seen the Disney one, but it wasn't that noticeable that it was Dakota Fanning. If I hadn't known beforehand I probably wouldn't have guessed.
