I just look up pet names until I find something that fits. For petz from other people, I usually keep the name, unless it's numbers, keysmashes, or a duplicate.

This happened last night and I thought it was relevant to this thread-- Me naming petz that I adopted last night from Shade (some leftovers from the Duke's Group Advent Calendar ((yes.... from Christmas 🤣)) that needed homes for the umm after holidays). This cutie with a sheepie personality-- Avi-Dachi..... Arrivederci! Perfect. Next. Elexis is a funny spelling of my name. .... One time at a coffee shop someone wrote on my coffee cup Eluis. Therefore this shall be Eluis. Next. Last one. Um Bl .. a.. .. re... Blaire. Is that a name? That's his name. Patiently stares at ball I pick his name.

I chose other because honestly I do them all. I'll use the random name generator on Behind the name and Rinworks Fantasy Name Generator. I'll pick a time era and look up popular names from them, am I working on a story at the time? Chances are at least one pat ends up with a character's name too. Was a random word said on TV? There's a name. Am I obsessed with a certain show/movie/book and hyper fixating? Name stealing. Sometimes I keep them, even if they're BrRd93 or something. Sometimes if it's just a number I'll rename them from 3 to three. If they have the same name as another pet I have of the same breed I will change the spelling. Night to Nyte for example. I try to get the names from button mashes. jj;gdfsjio could become Jig God or Jigjio. 3s are often turned to Es ect. I've also been known to stare at space until something catches my eye(a book...a binder...a brand name of the binder...)

Even when choosing names for my real pets over the years, if a name doesn't come to me instantly and sticks, I've either used baby name websites and chosen one that suits the pet, or "other", which for me is associating it with something like the day I got them. For example, I have one called 'Domingo' because he was born on a Sunday, and Domingo is Spanish for Sunday. Another is called 'Nikola' because he looks like Nikola Tesla (don't ask lol he just does). Another is called 'Chicken Nugget' because he looks like a chicken nugget!

Literally the first name that enters my mind when I look at the pet is what I go with.

Sometimes, when playing with a pet, I'll get the perfect name for them in my head just based on their behavior, little quirks in personality, etc..
But if it's for a pet I'm adopting out, I don't spend much time with them, plus the name most likely will be changed by the new owner - which is perfectly fine. I usually use names from objects around me, but I also like to stick with a theme. So, once, I named a litter after things found in a cleaning closest, since I was house cleaning that day. xD
Here recently, I'll pick a theme based on one of the parents names, then name all the pups/kittens around that. (the litters on sardonyx right now are all this way) Like my dog Pickle had a litter, and all her puppies have pickle themed names... Spear, Whole, Dill, etc. c:

I either keep the names my catz come with, or I try to name them based off of their appearance and personality. One of my cats is a deep chocolate colour with a white front for example, and the first thing I thought was: "She reminds me of hot chocolate", so I gave her the name "Hot Choc".

It kinda depends on the pet. If it's a random AC or bred pet of mine, I'll usually just name it whatever comes to my head first - whether that's something based on its colours/markings, or just a name I think suits the pet, or sometimes a name from a series or an animal I knew irl. I do have some hexies (and will probably make more in the future) that are based on my own characters (okay, and one that's based on a character from something else but whatever) so they are named after those characters.
If I get Petz from other people, I usually keep the name they came with if it's an actual name and not just random letters. If I got a pet with the same name as another one I already had, I'd have to change it but I would probably keep it very similar to the original (just add an extra word or change the spelling). For petz I get that have random letter names, I sometimes base the name off it somewhat, or sometimes base their name off a pet or different petz in their ancestry (not copy them, though).
For example, I got a pet named LW12 and I named her Lauren because the original name started with L (her mom's name was also Lawrence, though I didn't actually even notice that at first lol).

Avi-Dachi..... Arrivederci! Perfect. Next. I'm also in the camp of using adopted pets' buttonmash name as inspiration for a new one. "CC27" became "Seaside," "AA6" became Alabaster, etcetera. P.S. I'm in love with Arrivederci. I can't remember if I've ever changed a non-keymash name in the past, but I'm inclined to leave them as they are. For naturally-raised petz I've bred myself, when I was first playing the game I would pull names from whatever song I was listening to when a pup was born. I almost always had a CD going while playing Dogz and liked the idea that their names were randomly chosen by the universe that way. I also often go Shade 's route of drawing inspiration from something around me that I'm interested in at the time, whether that's video games, books, or even life events. I have a litter whose names are homages to things that came my way during the pandemic, for example. For my breeding projects, though, I started doing something I found really fun, which was choosing themes for litters inspired by one or both of the parents' names. Paneling and Sconce begat a litter named after various structural features of houses (Brickwork, Gable, Joist), and when Joist matched up with Bay, their kids were named after the architectural features of sailing ships (Hatch, Keelston, Trunnel).
It can get more abstract than that, though. Brickwork and Spandrel (I got a lot of mileage out of architecture terms) have children named after authors simply because their combined names brought to mind a cozy fireplace to read by, and for Cherry and Channel's litter I just cracked open a dictionary and grabbed words that began with Ch-. I only wish I had thought to do this from the outset of the project, because it's really neat to follow the logic down through the generations!
