I’m curious, how do you name your petz? To elaborate on the options above… Do you use a fantasy name generator, pick random words even if they aren’t name-y, use baby name sites, etc? I know not everyone adds their breeding crew to their website. If one of those petz has numbers for a name, do you keep it? If you adopt a pet that shares a name with a pet you already have do you change it? Or are you okay with duplicate names/okay with duplicate names when they’re of 2 different breeds? (The poll options about keeping the original name are more about if the original name is a keysmash or a name another pet you have already uses). Basically, how do you choose your petz names? A quick proboards search doesn’t return a poll on this, so I’m curious which naming source is the most popular. (Also meant to make it so you could vote on all 7 things but it’s set to 6 whoops haha)

If it already has a decent name I just keep that unless it's the same name as a pet I already own. If it's a jumble of letters then I play with the pet for a bit and get a feel for what the name might sound like. Does it begin with a Se sound or Bre sounds that sort of thing? Then I look at baby name or pet name websites under those letters and see if anything catches my eye.

If the pet comes with an actual name, I usually keep it unless I already have a pet named that or if I find that it just doesn't fit them. Otherwise, if they come with a name that's just letters and/or numbers or a name I don't really like for them, I use a script that CRUSH made (so basically I just press ALT+A until a name pops up that I like). I've added a bunch of names to that script that I've collected over the years from different sources. So I checked the first 4 options because many of those names come from those types of sources, and also Other because I use a random script to choose. ^^ I used to keep petz with the same names (like if they were different breeds or species), but it just got too confusing so I don't do that anymore unless they're just used for breeding. I have a lot of petz in my breeding stock folders that are named after their genetics and stuff (so a lot of random looking letters and numbers), but they always get a proper name right before I breed them so that their offspring's family tree looks nice. I don't usually care too much what my breeding petz are named - they're mostly random, so sometimes they end up with the same names as my actual petz. xD If I eventually end up keeping one of those breeding stock petz and they have a duplicate name, I just change it to something unique.

If a pet comes with a name and there are no duplicates, I almost always keep the given name. But if it doesn't already have a unique name (or if I just don't like the name), I usually end up naming it after something it reminds me of! That "something" could end up being anything- fictional characters, real people, foods, songs, random objects, whatever I think of when I play with them.
Sometimes I can think of a name instantly just from their appearance (i.e. the cat I named Reese because her colors reminded me of a Reese's cup from birth), other times I need to play with them for a pretty long time before thinking of anything that sticks (i.e. my cat Glacier, who went through 3 other winter-related names before I landed on Glacier because nothing else was *just right* for him).
Either way, I virtually never pull a random name out of thin air unless I really can't think of anything, every name has a meaning. Even if the meanings are a little stupid and silly sometimes.

If it has a name I'll keep it. If it's a random letter named pet, I match the name to the letters.
If I'm naming it, it's usually based off of the last word or sound I heard when trying to name it. Achoo here was named during someone sneezing. Lot named after music that was playing.

I keysmash my pet names unless I happen to like the pet, then I'll rename it to something that comes off the top of my head or something that makes me think of the pet.
Now when it comes to AC names for my breedfiles I am more deliberate. I look up the origin of the breed and try to come up with names relating to that country/culture. The dragon I used a name generator until I came up with something that seemed to fit.

If it has a name I'll keep it. If it's a random letter named pet, I match the name to the letters. I've done this before 😂 ** I honestly just look at Pet name websites. I'm surprised that wasn't on the poll? So like if I want to name a great dane, I'll literally google "great dane names" 🤣 ** If the pet is like one color or something, I might look up "other names for the color red". ** I sometimes will use the parents names and mix them together if the parents are important to the pet. ** Depending on the season I adopt the pet, like Christmas, or Summer, or Autumn, I'll look up "autumn names" and this is usually a baby name website haha

Let’s pretend the first option says baby/pet name sites 😂 It’s interesting hearing everyone’s answers! My petz aren’t organized well at all and I have so many of them that I think I’ll personally be using fantasy name generators from here on out. I’m afraid if I use pet/baby names I’ll end up with duplicates so I think this will give me more unique outcomes! So as for me, I don’t really have a set way to name petz yet but I do keep their keysmash/number names. Even if they get an official name I’ll change the file name from “12FS” to “Max 12FS” for organization/practical purposes.

I used to write down interesting names/words that I came across and transferred them to a file I keep in my Petz folder that's literally titled "Names" and I usually pull from that, along with using name sites and generators.
I'll rename number/keysmash petz, but I generally keep the name if it comes with an actual name, unless I already have a pet with that name. (Which, with the size of my crew, does happen sometimes lol) Sometimes this means I end up with two petz with very similar names, like Adam and Adams, and Luna and Lunar, stuff like that, but I'm pretty sure that I don't have any actual duplicate names in my crew.

I just name them as names come to me. Or if they have a name already that I like I'll keep it. But sometimes I do use like a baby naming site.

I checked "Other".
I only give what I consider "good" names to the petz I'm going to show. I keep a list to write down names and show names that come to mind every now and then. Ninety percent of the time, I'll try to match the name with something related to the pet -- that could be looks (most often), breed, history... I often try to pick names that I find either clever or funny, and then I try to tie the show name with that in some hopefully clever or silly twist. I almost never use online lists or generators though.
I'm not that picky for petz I'm only going to use for breeding (I want to keep the best names for show petz), so I might keep the original name, or rename to something similar to the original name if I already have one named that.
For adopted or bought petz who already have a name, it all depends whether I like the name or already have one named that. It's kind of 50/50 here, but if I rename for showing, then it's like I said above.

I picked other and names from things I like . I have named petz after Eurovision artists before, or OCs of mine and other stuff I like. But most of the time I keep the name the pet comes with, if it's a name or a word or something without numbers. Like my cat Belle, or dog Ostehøvel (cheese slicer xD). That's because that's the name they have when I first put them in game, so it like... That's how we met you know? XD so that name just clicks. If they come to me named something like nb3tk2 then I tend to name them there and then with something that makes me think of them. Like Marina for my ocean kitty, or Princess for my small little oshie. I rarely need to look through books I know a lot of names

I use the first four on the poll haha - baby name site, name generators, pick random words, names from things I like.
I also chose Other, because I use a random word generator (not name), or I think of a word that the pet reminds me of and then look up synonyms, related words, or what that word is in other languages for ideas.

I'm really bad at names so if it a pet comes with a non-duplicate name, I tend to keep it. Otherwise, I just come up with something random

if it comes with a name that isn't a keysmash or a number or something i'll usually keep it, other than that i'll usually pull up my music library and find a word in there and use that, or just ask my boyfriend for a random word or something. when i'm really getting into breeding i'll often switch to first phrase that pops into my head kinda stuff no matter how long or bizarre it is, which is how i get ones like "sorry for party rocking" and "the folly of man". if anyone has ever gotten a grab bag from me, i'm sorry, lol
