I found my petz 4 files from an external storage drive. I last played it 2007 or 2008???2014? On a whim I decided to try the game out and found two problems. One it asks for a serial number (hitting cancel bypasses it and opens the program), and the other is that Petza seems non functional or only partway functional.
That said I am amazed the program still runs if at all after all these years.

Whoa hi ButterflyChaser! Welcome back :)
What problem are you having with petza/the sliders? Petz and petza do still work in win10, but there are some workarounds we just all do. The ones I remember off the top of my head are a) have your game installed somewhere other than in your program files folder (putting the folder in Documents is a common choice) and b) setting the game to always run as administrator (right click the .exe -> compatibility -> check Run this program as administrator)

As far as where the game runs, it's in a folder off my desktop.
The sliders exist but there's no way to slide them. The values are fixed at the game's settings. If I have a newborn pound pet, it is age 15, but I can't change that setting. Thanks for the run as administrator suggestion though. That fixed the serial number request and enabled sound to play (though I turned it off atm.)

Thank you. I looked at it just now. So I have to search through my windows updates and remove one? That is confusing. I am not sure if keeping my windows not updated is a secure choice for other things.
So I looked at my updates and there's a whole slew of them since April 2021 and more scheduled to happen. I guess it has been unsuccessful installing the latest, so I am at windows 10 1903 with the last update installed 9/9 2021.

Is there a way to reach out to Nick of sherlock software to see if he can revisit the program and come up with a patch?
My guess most people using windows 10 just grow their petz naturally and don't worry about rushing it.

So I have to search through my windows updates and remove one? That is confusing. I am not sure if keeping my windows not updated is a secure choice for other things. I'm kind of curious about any responses to this section as well. I'm personally running Windows 10, and Petz is working flawlessly for me. I'm able to use the brainsliders as normal, but I don't really know why I can, and you can't. I thought my computer was updating automatically, but it now occurs to me that I haven't had to reset it for updates since...I don't know when. I'm thinking now it might have somehow stopped doing it by itself? But since this issue is popping up, I'm reluctant to look into it and fix it in case it also messes up my game. :\ But I have the same concern...this doesn't seem like a secure route to take either...is it really safe? I'm not really sure what to do. Or how to help you, ButterflyChaser. I'm sorry I can't be more help!

I looked at the thread linked again. It looks like some people got theirs fixed after installing the 20H2 update. Problem: My computer won't let me install that update. I get an error. Error 0xc1900223

My guess most people using windows 10 just grow their petz naturally and don't worry about rushing it. I believe Nick is able to be contacted - BUT last I heard he lost the source code for PetzA and is not able to make changes to it anymore, he'd have to recreate the program from scratch and from the sounds of it he doesn't really have that kind of time right now, unfortunately. As for the sliders - I have windows 10, fully updated as of yesterday and all my sliders and everything in my game still works great. There seems to be other glitches that some people come across that its really just hit and miss and nothing to do with whether it works on Windows 10 as I think most people have Windows 10 and no issues (there def isn't a majority of us naturally raising all our petz, thank god haha I don't have the patience for natural raising it seems, I've tried xDD). Its def case by case unfortunately. Have you tried the usual of uninstalling/reinstalling the game? Making sure the patch is installed, reinstalling PetzA (the petza.toy file is in your Toyz folder? Maybe get a new copy of this toy file?), or resetting the registry has also been known to fix issues? Another thing some of us have had to do lately is adding the petz file extensions (.pet, .dog, cat, .clo, .toy, .env) as well as the whole game folder and/or .exe's, which would include petzA files, as exceptions on our Antivirus (Windows Security and/or any other antivirus) - this is mainly for load times, but who knows maybe your antivirus is blocking something from working? Thats all I can think of at the moment haha If you've tried all that then I'm at a bit of a loss.

Oh! Is this not the codebase for PetzA here? github.com/thenickdude/PetzA(I happened to google for it a while back, which is why I have the link.) If this isn't an out-of-date link or anything, you could probably contact Nick by filing an issue on the Github page to report the bug.

Like I said I had just heard he lost it - maybe he lost the PWS source code or something then haha

I'm not good at code, so I don't know what to do with it. But maybe someone else here is and can do something with it?

Jojostory posted it before me— yes, we have access to the code but modifying it is not easy…
I have no idea what is causing this issue? I have Windows 10 and I update whenever it tells me too (adjust yesterday actually!).

Just a long overdo update to this saga. While I never was able to fix it, I did get a new computer and the sliders are functional. I don't know why they didn't work with my laptop. I can speculate about it being because it was set up as a touch screen, kind of a tablet, while this computer does not. It has a more updated processer and graphics though.
