Veteran of petz, not war, just to be clear. I've been involved with petz for probably... 15 years now? Was heavily in the PC for a good few years (almost exclusively Duke's Group and PKC, under the name MaxPower or Max back then), then the wheels fell off and I've been on/off ever since. I'm not in a good place in life, haven't been for years now, another forum I'm a member of (non petz related) is growing so toxic I'm backing out for my mental health so I thought... why not make a change? Go somewhere I've known existed for over a decade but never joined? A fresh start? So that's why I'm here. I have a very small amount of petz right now, only four (one was adopted last night in fact, doesn't even have a name yet), and I intend to keep a small number. I don't show any more, only the odd competition perhaps if I'm bored, and I only keep realistic-patterned dogz because one of my major special interests (I'm autistic) is dog coat genetics. I also play as though my dogz have a life span - 1 rl month = 1 petz year - and they eventually "die". I find it helps me to not get overwhelmed, and also bond more with them knowing they won't be around forever. My primary interests are Borzoi (fave ), other sighthounds, terriers, random mixies hexed to be genetically realistic and I'm trying the lesser known original breeds. I love Dalis, but their SCP does get boring after a decade. I use P4 right now, but I know there have been a few breakthroughs with P5 lately so we'll see. My current dogz: Corsair - Falcon - Norton - newbOutside petz I am a volunteer on a heritage railway (currently closed cos of covid) where I am a qualified diesel driver, standing steam fireman and working on running steam fireman and driver. I also tend to be the one who gets the sootiest at the end of the day; as one of the youngest members I am one of the primary coallers. Coal mining runs through the genes round here so I enjoy it, even if I have to disrobe before I'm allowed past the front mat :x My name is partially a reference to coal, and also the name of my carsona.I'm owned by two cars, one of whom is my future drift car, and I spend pretty much all my disposable income on them for one reason or another. I'm also 'mildly' obsessed with the navy and planes in general thanks to my adopted brother, hence Corsair and Falcon up there. In terms of rl pets, I am the keeper of a horde of brown lipped snails (Cepaea nemoralis), and am just as nerdy about their genetics as dogs. I have 10 adults and 22 juveniles right now, one of which is 95% certain to be a very rare white-lipped brown lip; I'll know for certain as he reaches adulthood. Weywot has a "siamese" eyestalk which the expert I contacted has never seen before either, in any mollusc.Adults:Babs: So, I hope I haven't scared too many of you off with that, and I hope this can be the start of a new chapter.

Hello, and welcome to the forum. I like your idea of playing Petz as though your dogz will eventually die. That's an interesting way to play and I've never heard of anyone playing it like that but it makes sense, considering real life pets don't live long either. I guess the short time you have with them would become special? I don't think I could do that though, mainly because I get attached to them easily. I think Corsair is a really pretty dog, by the way, and your snails are also very pretty! I used to keep two types of stick insects.

rhikan Thank you for your welcome. I've never seen anyone do it either tbh, though I guess I play petz oddly in general compared to most of the PC. It does feel more that they're real and progressing through life, yes, and of course gives more of an incentive to play if you know they're only here for a year or so (something that hasn't always worked but never mind). I obviously don't ask anyone who adopts to play the same way, it is only a game. Thank you. Corsair is based on a real Borzoi, and the snails are very pretty and very gross in equal measure. I know very little about stick insects, I don't think I'd dare have one in case I accidentally threw one out in a clean up (number one reason tiny baby snails don't ever get proper clean outs - far too risky with how small they are).

Max!! It's nice to see you around the community again I hope you find yourself a little more at ease with your petz being around now. I'm also happy to see snails <3 I had aquatic snails back when, so I'm not entirely sure how raising terrestrial snails go (I'd assume not very different, except the water part lol) but yours are so very lovely, slime & all! The shells are beautiful!! I'm very interested in your Weywot & possible white-lipped one, that really fascinates me & I would love to hear/see more! Best wishes to you, your cars (I remember them! That is, if they are the same two from before) & snails! Glad to have you back around <3

Good gods, Koda, it's been a while. I thought you'd long gone tbh, glad you haven't though. And I've never had aquatic snails so I don't know either If aquatic snails can demolish a cucumber in approximately 5.3 seconds though they're very similar. And you'll regret giving me permission to nerd about snails But yeah, Weywot's right eyestalk has a pigment misdistribution where all the pigment has gone to the end while the rest is unpigmented, all the way back through his foot; his left is perfectly normal. White stripe I have asked two actual snail experts about and they both say "very likely, can't be certain until fully grown because of the way pigment spreads". The more I see him the more clear the line gets though, so I'm optimistic. The one on the left is the only other one like him I've ever seen. They are of course the same two, though both have been off road for over a year because of breakdowns, restos and money/world shut down issues. That is a major part of why I've been so unwell tbh, and still no end in sight.

Welcome to RKC! I hope you enjoy this place and find your niche here in the community. You're certainly not alone in seeking a bit of comfort in the familiar nostalgia of petz when things are tough. That's how I ended up back here after not really having been part of the petz community since my childhood...and a year later, I'm still here.
Your play style is definitely unusual, but it just goes to show how open petz is with regards to how we can play the game and what we get out of it. I actually struggle with impermanence so knowing that my virtual petz are a constant is a plus for me, and until I read your post I never thought about the possibility of simulating lifespan in-game. Interesting!
Love the snail pics too. Is it possible/easy to breed them for specific colour patterns/variations?

zan Thank you, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one here for that reason. And yes, my playstyle is definitely based on realism, but also I guess my natural inclination to streamlining. I can't cope with too much "stuff" hanging around, and it applies to my petz too. I do get attached to the petz, but if I get overwhelmed I don't play at all, so it's a balancing act. It is possible, but it requires having them separated from other snails before they hit maturity, and only introduced to the snail wanting to be paired. This and many species of snail are hermaphroditic, so any snail can mate with any other snail. In fact, this species often retains the sperm of many previous matings, and clutches are usually mixed with the sperm from two different parents. It's an adaptation based on the fact snails don't tend to wander very far (or fast ), increases genetic diversity. ... But it makes it impossible to selectively breed snails kept together. My solution is to see who's digging and choose eggs from snails not related to the others (wild caught ones) to reduce inbreeding. My latest clutch however, were accidents, and are most certainly inbred Also, quite by accident, I ended up finding all my old petz on an old USB stick. I didn't really know what to do, they're all definitely "dead" in my aging system, but I didn't just want to lose them again. ... But I also don't wanna get overwhelmed... So what I've done is "kill off" the older petz who've already been bred, keep these guys a while for breeding, then they can go too. Harsh I know, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Bán - BTE* - Trevor - Grad - Mason - Opolzyen' - Potato - SyeryebroNgl I really missed Trevor, dunno how I'm gonna say goodbye to Trevor. * Best Thing Ever, for how can any beast so magnificent not be?

Well, it certainly sounds like you've figured out how to keep the game fun for you!
Oh I see, that does sound quite difficult to restrict their breeding to only the pairings you want (and I'm not sure the snails notice much or mind, but I kind of like seeing them living in a communal setting).
I'd sadly long lost all my old petz files but I did adopt an identical 1st gen great dane in honour of one of my first ever petz. It's pretty neat that you were able to bring your old petz back. Bán is gorgeous; is he a hexed scottie or a separate breedfile? And aww, Trevor. Maybe an option would be to adopt them out once you classify them as 'dead', unless that would feel weird to you.

zan Snails do like living with other snails, they actively seek other snails out to sleep next to and if they have to be seperated (for isolation if they've hurt themselves/are ill) they can't settle. They definitely need some company. Thank you; no she's hexed, I hexed her (all dogz shown so far I've hexed, don't tend to adopt much nowadays for obvious reasons). Are hexed OBs a Thing here? Does anyone in the PC outside PKC keep them? And I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with him, or any others. If there's interest I might put some up for adoption once I'm done, class it as a retirement home or somet.

Hexed OB do really well when I sold them on PUGs or TFM ehehe. I think people really liked hexed petz in general. I love hexed OB more than I do hexed bodies (wildz, etc.)-- I love the old school originals <3 I love Dalis, but their SCP does get boring after a decade. There's actually editing of personalities now!! You can make Dalmatian SCP more interesting! Check this out: petzforum.proboards.com/thread/69589/personality-discussion

Thor I did actually read that, hurt my dyscalculic brain and gave up. Maybe I'll give it another go in the future...

Oh, that's really interesting! In that case if I were ever to keep them I'd rather prioritise those social needs instead of breeding for specific traits. Come to think of it, I have seen wild snails nestled together like that before.
