Kat, the person who made the recent video about petz, posted a video a few days ago about Dollz and dolling.
I had a lot of fun in the dolling community From around 2000 until I burnt out in 2002 or 2003. It was one of my first introductions to trying to make my own digital artwork... And why I'm so fond of gimp. Anyone else remember these?

I remember dollz so well! I didn't do much on the pixel art side of things (I tried to make a couple of small edits and they were consistently terrible) but I used to spend so much time on dollmakers back then. I went looking for some a while back because I wanted to add a doll to my Petz site as a joke but it seems like most of them have closed.
I'll definitely have to watch this video, it'll be a real trip down memory lane. Thank you for sharing it!

i vaguely remember these. they were kinda before my time, but then again so is petz. it does get me nostalgic for all the flash dressup games i used to play on like..deviantart and stuff tho. i dumped hours into that dang kitten maker thing.
stuff like this interests me so much tbh. i love learning the history of like somewhat obscure communities that just did their thing, purely bc it was fun. its so wholesome.

Your welcome :-) The video covered a lot of things that I didn't know on the early history of dolls. I got started when a friend showed me doll makers, and then within a few weeks leaped into learning how to make them on my own. I'm tempted to add a doll album to the etc section of my site. I've even gone so far as to look up some of the base maker's current pages. i vaguely remember these. they were kinda before my time, but then again so is petz. it does get me nostalgic for all the flash dressup games i used to play on like..deviantart and stuff tho. i dumped hours into that dang kitten maker thing. stuff like this interests me so much tbh. i love learning the history of like somewhat obscure communities that just did their thing, purely bc it was fun. its so wholesome. A kitten maker? That sounds really fun! I mostly did the dress up ones over on DA and the Pony one. I think it's the only thing I remember clearly enjoying that was made with flash. I remember them very well. I had 2 websites...Heaven Sent and Crescent Moon Dolls Crescent Moon Dolls sounds really familiar, but details are just out of reach. Did you ever have a sky blue layout for it?

I've even gone so far as to look up some of the base maker's current pages. I was really amazed by the part about KiSS dolls! I had no idea about that or how popular it was. I'm pretty sure I came across it a couple of times but that was just the tip of the iceberg, apparently. Most dollmaker games I played were in-browser ones rather than downloadables. It makes sense I wouldn't have known about them, the video says they were huge in anime fandoms and I wasn't in any. I came across a whole site with lists of KiSS games, there were so many!
If you liked character maker games in a non-Dollz style, you should check out Picrew.me . It has multiple animal ones, even scenery and object makers. It's pretty fun and my friends love it.
EDIT: I love that you remember how you found doll makers! I think I found them by accident. xD I never got around to making them on my own, my attempts at that were really ugly because I was just not good at pixel art (that and the late 90s/early 00s clothing styles were not always the most flattering ahahaha).

lobb Early 2000s clothes were probably hard to doll. I didn't really try to do trendy stuff. I mostly just did whatever random thing popped into my head at the time XD I like tinkering with character makers of lots of styles. Thanks for the tip about that site. Maybe I can poke around it when I'm not so tired.

Maybe I can poke around it when I'm not so tired. I meant that they're not styles that look great that often! Bellbottoms tended to look weird on dollz, in retrospect, even when they were done well. I didn't do a lot of trendy stuff in my attempts but my frame of reference for clothes back then just wasn't great anyway xD
Sorry, that probably made more sense in my head.

lobb You make sense to me. ;-) Bell bottoms are tricky on people too! XD It's a hard style to deal with.

I know this is an older post, but this was a fun find because I was thinking about dollz recently! I always had fun making them off the various sites. Man, I miss the old internet. Good times!
