So, we've been having some animal activity on our security camera during tonight and yesterday, and...I can't figure these out? I don't want to post my location out there, so if anyone just happens to know, or have a guess, that would be awesome. xDD If not, well we can wonder together...
This first one is hard to see. The clip on it was merely seconds long, and the "jpg-in-motion" quality made it vanish. This was the CLEAREST screenshot I could get:
It's facing the left, as it climbed up over that wooden beam and moved towards the camera.
This is a closeup and altered version of the same screenshot. That black silhouette against the white is the creature. When it was moving, I was thinking raccoon...but this silhouette looks like...maybe a fox??
This one is EDITED, these two were never on the rock at the same time...the one on the left is a squirrel carrying something in its' mouth. But on the right? What is that??
It's not a chipmunk (unless it's absurdly big) because there was a chipmunk seen later and they look like lizards, they're so tiny!! And their tails NEVER quit moving, this one wasn't half as twitchy.
Again, close-up and altered image. (That's a pinecone in the middle, pay no mind!)
And another image of the same critter.
I was thinking, maybe some kind of weasel? But all images I find, they don't have a full white wrap-around collar marking like this one seems to have. The story behind these two...the squirrel wandered all over the yard until he found a place to bury his food, and left. The weasel thing came a few minutes later, retracing the squirrels steps almost exactly, and disappeared where the food had been buried, likely stealing it. I really think some kind of weasel or relative of them, but...what do you think? I can't figure out that marking...
Hmm that's strange about the first one can't hardly tell about it at all but if it climbed over a wooden beam, I wouldn't think it would be a fox. Maybe a raccoon or skunk? The second one definitely looks like some kind of mink or weasel. Is it brown and white? There is one called a least weasel that is mostly brown with white on its chest and neck. Just my thoughts on this lol -Bec-

Bec Oh...maybe my words sounded too crazy there. The wooden beam was laying on the ground. A fox could have stepped over it. x'DDD So it could still be! Skunks tend to keep their tails up though, right? Whatever this was always had the tail facing downwards. I kinda doubt skunk, personally! But the Least Weasel could be! I'm not sure what color it is...it looks almost black in the last picture, but I'm fairly sure it was brown.
But yeah, weasels, minks, stoats...I looked up every possible relative I could think of, and nobody has a collar all the way around! Not saying it's impossible and this can't be one of them all the same though. Maybe this one didn't know the marking rules. xDDD So far the Least Weasel and stoat look most possible...I'm almost leaning towards the Least Weasel. I should see if those are in the area...
To even try and guess I'd have to have a state or area of the country to go on. The options if you are in Texas vs Minnesota vs. Oregon vs Florida, (or maybe a different country all together) are quite a bit different!
That helps a bit...though I bet the wildlife in northern and southern California alone varies quite a bit. If I had to guess, I would say it is a Fisher (or maybe a Martin). Both Fishers and Martins are active at night and are usually solitary. They are long and skinny like that creature. Martin's have bushier tails and I think they are smaller...which is why I lean towards Fischer. I think the Martins can have patchy light/dark coats like that though. I thought that was just the light in the picture, but maybe it's a combination of the light and the coat color? There are some really cool creatures here in Texas too that only come out at night and I hope to catch a glimpse of them someday! Trail cameras with night vision are very good for that type of stuff. Getting one of those might be the best way to solve the mystery once and for all
