I just want to start out by saying, I love RQ's guides for both dogz and catz. They have helped me with showing.
But now I'd like to host and judge some shows.
I've been looking at other shows and deciding "who would place bis", but BOY do I not get it. I am currently hosting an EBW show on DG and I am having the hardest time judging it...
Currently I check and place based off of: 1) look at front legs for alignment 2) tails 3) eye lids = tie breakers
I think I have the hardest time with alignment, especially when the OB can have some of the left leg stick out and still be okay. I think all the petz I'm currently judging have perfect alignment ToT?? Ah, I'm just at a loss for this.
Does anyone have advice for a complete newbie for judging shows? Or do I just need more time posing my own petz and eventually I'll get it?
Thanks!

Yes, it's a lot about knowing what's the best that can be achieved with specific body parts/traits. For instance, try to pose a cat with calico or meezer front legs (hopefully not with those personalities though!) over and over. Take plenty of pose pictures of them, then compare them. You'll know that you've done your very best and see what is possible with those body parts, and what isn't. Same with the tails. Then you can apply that knowledge to your judging.
For me, after so many years posing catz, I can tell at a glance whether a cat is in optimum position, or if it could have been slightly better one way or another. I take their breeds' body parts into account a lot.
Sometimes though, like you say, there is nothing wrong at all with several poses in a show. When it's like that, I go into nitpicking mode or just pick my favorite for other reasons.
If you want, you can link some judged shows below, along with your personal placements before looking, and maybe we can comment on them and see why some have placed higher than others, or whether your own placements are valid, too? I often find that I would have placed the petz differently myself.

I'm going to use your recent show just as an example: petzforum.proboards.com/thread/65935/ratqueens-catz-pose-show-judgedMy cat, Twix, placed BIS, but I know that's the best aligned for Calicoes. I think the pose by Jess's Maizy is the best for those Calico front legs with the bit in the back sticking out? I have no idea how to comment on MW's cat at all.... but ignoring that cat I think the show would be: Maizy Twix Patty = you shouldn't see any leg with that leg type right? Nan = I see too much leg and I shouldn't with that leg type? (which I peaked is sorta right at least ^^) ((I'll get more shows later and of course anyone is able to comment on any thoughts ^^))

It was indeed very close between Twix and Maizy. It would be okay to place either cat as BIS over the other. I placed Twix above Maizy for 3 reasons: 1) Twix's eyelids are perfectly even, while Maizy's are ever so sligtly uneven (only visible when zooming in). 2) Both have Calico front legs, so I can compare them and find that there are less pixels of the other leg showing on Twix, and 3) Twix's standard Calico tail (which is notoriously difficult to perfect) has the optimal Calico tail curve, which is somewhat of a feat. You're correct about Patty. This cat is angled a little bit too much to the left (front away from the camera), which makes the front legs misaligned. If this cat was angled straight, it could have a perfect alignment with this type of legs (looks like B&W legs, which align perfectly). MW's cat is difficult to judge. Can't say anything about the tail, so it has to be ignored like with a tailless cat (but if another tailed cat has a perfect curve, especially if it's a difficult tail like Calico or Siamese, I will place that other cat above an unusual/tailless cat). The front legs seem perfectly aligned, even when zoomed in, so I know it's not misaligned and shouldn't place too close to the bottom. The pupils, however, are not perfectly straight, but I don't know if the reason is because it's a hex or not. Whether it places high or low in a given show depends entirely on the other catz in that show. Correct again about Nan. That little kitty is very misaligned (front towards the camera), which affect just about everything in that pose: way too much of the other leg showing, the tail appears straight instead of curved, and the pupils are not on a straight line. Also, and even though the cat probably has a Chinchilla personality (which could excuse slightly uneven eyelids), the eyelids are way too uneven -- especially since it is possible to get even Chinchilla eyelids with a little patience. I have no doubt Alex is aware of all that

^ Yes, Alex is completely aware of that and just didn't care. ^^ If it was my Sammies, I would've probably worked harder at getting a better pose, but my cats..eh. *shrug* I'm okay with them taking a long time to finish showing.
You're always welcome to ask me as well if you have questions about showing.

You're always welcome to ask me as well if you have questions about showing. If I adopt a little Sammy from you, I'll be sure to ask for advice on how to best pose them x3 <3
