I've seen some amazing hexed petz over the years. I tried it quite awhile back, with little success. I decided I'd try it out today, I was trying to follow the hexing tutorial on Supernovas website for LNZ Pro, and I feel equally as overwhelmed as I did back then LOL. On the site she uses a breed file, but does it have to be that, or can it be a pet file? And are there any other helpful websites that I can use? Maybe between a few of them I can figure it out easier *shrugs* I tried clicking on a few links that we're in another thread on here, but a lot of them seem to use ResHack, or be inactive links. Finally, I know there is a color chart for eyes, but are there any "lists" or charts for different things like fur patterns, different ear types, etc? Sorry for the 20 questions! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Also, just for kicks (and to make myself feel better LOL) how many other hexers out there felt overwhelmed and confused when you first started? What motivated you to keep pushing through until you finally got it right? And how did you feel when you created your FIRST hexed pet?! (Pictures of your creations are more than welcome!!)
Thanks in advance!

Learning to hex certainly can be overwhelming, but once you get a handle of what each LNZ section does and how to use PW and LNZ together/how they complement each other, it gets easier! Celia has some great tutorials at Filthy Hippie (http://petz.filthyhippie.net/) that detail the basics. And any site/tutorial you find for ResHack can be used for LNZ Pro -- they're nearly identical programs for hexing petz (I think LNZ was created specifically for hexing petz). You can definitely hex on a pet file, but it's harder because you'll need to use LNZ (I don't think PW supports individual .pet files but I've never tested this tbh) to navigate the files, and many of the comments and labels you'd find in breedfiles are not included in .pet files. You'd also be hexing a single pet, so if you want to adopt out a similar hexie, you'd essentially either be copying your own pet and changing the eyes/colors/whatever or copy/pasting your hexwork into another .pet file and it just gets unnecessarily messy lol. Hexing a breedfile allows you to adopt out different petz of the same hexwork (i.e. different, individual personalities) which I think is one of the draws of the game, and you get to keep the labels/comments that help you sort and organize your work. (side note: hexing directly on a .pet file is usually called "brexing" and it can range from changing ugly eyelid colors to enhancing the pet with extra spots/textures typically unachievable through breeding, but anything brexed will not pass on in breeding genetics) There are a number of charts that have been created to help with colors and textures. I've uploaded the ones I use most often here (I can't remember where I got these so forgive me for the lack of crediting): imgur.com/a/zjwpo* One thing to take note of is that colors and textures will appear differently from computer to computer. This is especially true for higher color numbers (around 228 and up is where variations often occur) and any of the "bunny" and "terrypink" textures may not appear like they do in the charts (it's a lot of trial and error but you can get interesting texture color combos with these). * Also note that the texture charts uploaded have errors. In the first, larger one, the 90s, 100s, 110s, and 120s columns are incorrect. 90s are browns, 100s are tans, 110s are blue/steel, and 120s are dusty. I'm not sure about charts showing ear types...it's something that I've learned just through breeding and seeing the variations in mixes. Most of them are pretty recognizable in dogz; catz ears are trickier. I wanted to make pretty things and trade for pretty things, and that's why I learned how to hex xD Now it's just a hobby and mostly for myself because I like the modding aspect of the game Hope that all helps! Feel free to ask more questions.

xKitsune gave some awesome advice and info. Hexpedia could be useful in the near future. It's not so much helpful teaching the very basics of hexing but it can help show how to create things. I wanted to get better a lot faster than I actually was haha Think the motivation not to give up was because it was hexing that made me interested. Easy game editor to make dinosaurs, I'm in. I have the (mis)fortune of giving all my files since I've started to someone who's kept every single one, so there's (sadly) still record of my very very first hex; My second seemed to be going in the right direction But we all have our days xP I think I've come a little ways with my most recent So never give up xP

xKitsune gave some awesome advice and info. Hexpedia could be useful in the near future. It's not so much helpful teaching the very basics of hexing but it can help show how to create things. idk how I never took the time to look through Hexpedia before but oh my god anchoring spots with Excel is GENIUS. All that time I've spent hand-anchoring... ;o; ---- I was very self-conscious when I first started hexing, so I don't think I kept any "experimental" files...these were the first ones I liked enough to adopt out, haha: First hex (2005), mostly practice with blending colors with spots on the joints. Pretty sure the pooftail uses the same ball sizes as the oshie lol. Second hex (2006), using some copy-paste paintball stripes I got from somewhere... ---- As I got more confident with paintballs....this happened xD (2007) A result of hours spent tediously spotting in PW, anchoring in LNZ, checking the adoption center...and redoing spots. I mostly hexed calis, danes, and mutts in the mid-late 2000s when the PC was its most active. These were the most popular breeds, and I was happy to stick with them lol. But since the PC Revival of 2017, I relearned hexing and decided to go full force in learning to mod with addballz, experiment with textures I used to be afraid of using, and tackle less common breeds. These guys are my most ambitious to date: (2018) Poodle modded to look more fox-like and inspired by textures that an oldie PCer used to hex with. I really love using these "busier" textures now because you can make really neat blendy designs. (2018) My craziest hexie which is an oshie-turned-reindeer! Learned a lot about addballz-work with this one. ---- My heavily modded petz are nowhere near the godly craziness of some of our more seasoned wildz/fantasy hexers here, like Midnightwolf, Star, and Mako to name a few! But it just goes to show that you can make really awesome things with patience and a good understanding of how ballz and linez interact I think of hexing as a very artistic form of coding, and it's wonderful to see how everyone's styles evolve from hex to hex.

I did a deepdive into my old photobucket account for these >>First off, I second all of the resources that have been mentioned already! These are very good sources. I literally thought I would never be able to hex. I remember way back in the day admiring hexers so much (Manda and Dylan, Kitty, Smarti and so many others. Meer of Black Mist Crittery - I loved everything about their aesthetic and hexes, heck these files are still rad!) and desperately wanting to have some stuff to trade that would be good enough to offer. I would get so frustrated trying to read tutorials that I kind of...brute forced/broke a ton of files before I started to understand what the tutorials were explaining. Pet Workshop really helped me get an idea of how the ballz and linez interacted and from then on it was much easier to work in LNZ pro. I use both to achieve my hexes! As a side note, paintballz have always been a pain for me. I love shaping a file, but painting it always loses my interest. I'm still working on this even now with current hexes. What kept me going was really a desire to be creative. I love monsters and creatures. I struggled with my drawing ability, but hexing let me sculpt. I wanted to make weird odd ball creations to share with other people in the community that enjoyed that sort of thing. This was actually my first hex (with copy and paste dali spots and all!) I gave out a few to close friends. Don't laugh, these are a big, scary wolves These were on the first hexes I actually posted to a wide audience and adopted out a bunch (what is going on with your ears bud? what I did I do to your tail??? I should remake this with my current pet snake.) What are tthooooose?? But, with each hex, you'll learn new things. Stuff that works/didn't work. Techniques that you'll use again and again. It's always fun to see a hexers improvement over the years! Plus there's never any harm in posting a file you have in progress and asking for suggestions/help. ^^ And, after all those horrors, this is my most recent file, the shark cat! I forced myself to paintball, even if they were subtle x] I'm pretty happy with these guys as they're very expressive and goofy in game. Also, for fun, I sometimes make work in progress graphs of complex hexes that I do so that I can track the weird and wacky stages my files sometimes go through. I post them here to remind you that with any of your hexperiments, sometimes the middle stages will be horrifying but that doesn't mean the end result won't be awesome! Thank you all so much for all of the helpful advice, and for sharing your experiences! I love seeing everyone's creations! I'm feeling inspired to try again, so everyone please wish me luck 😁 Ok, I absolutely LOVE the one with the snake wrapped around it's leg!! Snakes are my favorite animals I have a reptile room at my house, with quite a few snakes. Mainly Reticulated Pythons, but I also have a Burmese Python, a Blood Python, a couple of Ball Pythons, and a Kenyan Sand Boa! I also really like how you take photos and track your progress, it's super interesting to see all of the different stages they go through!

*Meraki* Ahh, what a beautiful baby! My partner and I currently have one ball python named Ethan. He's our first herp! I was pretty nervous regarding care at first because I'd only ever had dogs/cats, but he's been a super chill bud (and an excellent eater/shedder). And now I'm itching to take a stab at revamping that file >> He's such a cutie! They're a lot of fun to have, and much easier to care for than dogs and cats (I have these also lol) If you do work on that file more, can you please show me pictures?? I'd love to see it! 🙂
