Yeah, it is hard to keep them alive. (Well, I play on hardest mode) I've restarted twice now due to errors, but I've learned what to build first and what not to build first. It takes some time to learn what to to succeed but it is fun. Never assume your first map will succeed. xD I spent a couple hours then I did some dumb things and sent them to the wrong place and bam, all starved to death. xD I think I'll waste today away restarting it.

Never assume your first map will succeed. xD Any tips on what to build first? I read we should hold off building a market until much later, to avoid collapsing the food chain, but other than that I'm not sure. I think placement matters quite a lot? I've read about people building clusters -- i.e. forester + woodcuter + hunter + gatherer + herbalist all together in the woods (and is it a good idea to build houses for them nearby? But then, does that leave enough forested area for them around?

I first make them start gathering while I set up about 4-5 houses. (Just enough for one to be empty or only having 1 person in it)
Then I build a fishing building or two and set people there to fish. Normally that and the food you start with can get them through the first winter.
After that I build 1-4 (One year I did 1, the second I did another, and then the third I put 2 more because I was just barely making it each yeah) 15x15 crops. Set up workers but they only start working late Autumn/Early spring I believe. Once they're done it's about late summer and they instantly harvest. I try to put the max people there so they make it in time. I also make a small orchard just because it takes forever to be ready and you need them for the tavern to make them happy, but it's not a big deal if you don't.
It is best to having the forester/hunter/gather/herbalist in the woods. The wood cutter doesn't need to be because they take the logs from your storage. I do have one hunter kind of on the edge of town right next to a forest (not in) and they still kill the deer that wonder over.
I'm just now out of all of that and I've built a blacksmith and a school and I'm debating on what to get next. Never rely on the hunters because they really suck at the beginning with the basic tools. I just like having them because when they do finally kill something, it helps to get people through the winter.
My houses are in the middle right now (I'm saving to build a tunnel to expand so I can leave one forest alone) and my people seem to be fine even when I send them a little far out. One kid and one adult did starve because the adult didn't make it to the warehouse in time. But it was kind of a relief because my population was growing really fast.
So far that's all I got. xD I'm doing awesome on this map though.

^ I was relying too much on the hunters, I think! I figured they were a good deal because they bring meat and leather, so I hadn't even tried crops yet. Food is really the most important thing in this game, it seems. And maybe having a large food buffer, just in case. I had no idea we could build tunnels! (I've only played a flatish map so far). Are you playing on a mountainous map where your people are stuck in clearings and valleys? And thanks for the tips! I'm going to try a different approach next time I play it

I always have issues with food. Since the kids eat more than the adults and do nothing, it's hard. I was up to 48 adults and 28 kids (plus 10 students) and they were all working but in the middle I had 30 adults die from starvation. But since they all did the work and the moment a bunch died, a bunch of kids aged to adults. So I was able to harvest all the work they did and ended up with 5k+ food. Since then, I'm finally not just barely getting by.
I'm annoyed by how hard it is to get the food. I've been focusing on that so much I now lost two people to the cold (no logs) even though it was 52 degrees. O.o
Hah. Just saw it was 7pm. I started at 4:50pm for "just 20 minutes". That was a fast "20 minutes".

Simcity offline mode was released today. FAQ here. Other stuff, I got around to finishing one of the main storylines in Skyrim the other day. Now to take part in the civil war I guess or one of the bazillion side quests I still have to do.

Simcity offline mode was released today. FAQ here. I might go out and get it then. I read so much crap about it not working cause of the internet servers and stuff. I had almost all of them growing up and it didn't feel right not getting this one. xD Although I still have Thief and I'm up to 60+ population on Banished... Need more time in the day.

^ Excited about the SimCity update!! I only bought the game when I first heard they were going to patch it for offline play. Haven't played it much yet.
Have you updated it yet, Catbaloo? Any big glaring bug?

Have you updated it yet, Catbaloo? Any big glaring bug? I have and not that I've noticed but I've only played quickly for about 15mins. My daughter has chicken pox and tonight has been in and out of bed like a yo-yo so I'm not getting much gaming time tonight (or sleep) me thinks. I did try out the raise terrain option that they added a few patches ago so that you can make raised overpasses. I hope they add more options like this in the future. It would be nice if they let us create our own region terrains even if it's for offline mode only. I'm hoping that maybe the community will find a way around this.

^ So, originally, you couldn't even make a road that passed over another??
I just installed the update and didn't have any probem so far. Going to actually play it a bit now.
The feature I miss the most in SimCity is an undo function! Drives me crazy not to have something so basic.

I'm up to a couple hundred population on Banished and I can't stop. But sadly I have another contract so I'll have to put it on hold for a bit. I keep yoyoing from just barely enough food to survive til the next spring, to too much food I don't have enough storage for it all.

The feature I miss the most in SimCity is an undo function! Drives me crazy not to have something so basic. Not as a proper overpass/bridge unless you could fool it into making them over water. I've seen a few pictures exploiting that to make these ridiculously high road structures. I can't remember exactly how they did it at the time but it was interesting to see. I've been playing a bit of Pokemon Platinum as I never finished off a lot of stuff. I finally caught the lake trio today. The first two were simple battles but Mesprit took me all evening to catch. Had her down to a sliver of HP quite early on but she just wouldn't stay in the darn ball. In the end I had to drag out an under leveled Gastly from the PC just to use Mean Look to give me a bit more time to throw things at her.

I still really badly want SimCity, it just never seems to be on sale whenever I have money to spend on it.
