Okay, so I want to put my site up, but I need hosting. I know a lot of people in the past have used webs.com, but I've been reading things about them making it hard to use straight HTML. I was just hoping people might like to give me their two cents on what host they use and why. My big priority is being able to use HTML, because that's how I've built my site and I do not like templates. Thanks!

I use Zymic. No ads, all html based so you'll need an ftp client to upload your website. (i use filezilla) It also is a very small addition to the url. I chose 99k.org, others have chosen zzl.org etc. zymic.com/

I've been using heliohost for some of my projects and it's been working really well. They allow HTML as well as other goodies like PHP, they don't use ads, and they offer a nice variety of options for addresses/domain names. They're probably the best free hosting I've been able to find. You can FTP if you have a client like Filezilla (or a few others, but I have Filezilla), but they also have a good cpanel structure if you're more familiar with that. Good services all around.

I have always used webs.com and have never had issues with it, but hopefully the other two sites people mentioned will work for you if you're not really a fan of it :3

I use www.leadhoster.com/They have no ads, php, mysql, & email address. You can upload by ftp or web browser. You can also set up subdomains (multiple to chose from) if you don't have a domain and you can have multiple sites hosted on your account. They also have a free wordpress & joomla installer if you're interested in that. You can use html, php, etc which makes it nice too I've used them for years now and been very happy.

Wow all that for free? That's more or less what I get from mine and I'm paying I assume the only catch is using their domain name?

If you have a domain name or intend to get one, I recommend 000webhost. I've been very happy with it for the past year or so. You can use the CPanel, they offer free email (though it's not the best), and the space is pretty generous. No ads, either.

000webhost is not good. xD At least for me it was horrible. If your site gets high traffic, it'll randomly block groups of people from viewing your site. At least, I assumed it was from high traffic. I had to move my site three times before I gave up because groups of people couldn't view my site anymore. I just started using www.biz.nf/ for my crew site and it's pretty awesome. The link size is really small. It's just yoursite.co.nf I THINK it's a partner of the site key0fthetwilight posted. They look/work the exact same and have the exact features, but the other one's link names were way too long for my taste.

^ I agree 100% with midnightwolf. I actually tried 000webhost for a while and it was terrible. Every other week they'd pull my site down, saying it was "removed due to malicious content". If I asked what was going on they'd put it right back up... at first. After 8 months of this, finally they just refused to put it back up. They said that I needed to take off the 'malicious content' if I wanted to get my site back. But there was none there to remove, so I was stuck without a site. :\ So yeah, after that whole rigamarole, I wouldn't recommend them to someone else... not when there are other free hosting companies that don't come with that kind of aggravation.

www.freehostia.com is pretty decent. They offer some of the same features others here have mentioned. There's no ads and you get plenty of storage space. You can even have multiple sites with their own url under one account. FTP is optional. The only thing is you have to 'renew' your free plan each year, which really is no biggie and is free, of course.

I host people on yoursubdomain.soulrequiem.com as well though there's going to be a 5 hour data migration period within 1-2 months...I'm moving to a CPanel server. After that I can give as much space as you'd like. I have a few petz people from back when who still use my server space (Haruka, and someone who goes by the name of oddish? I think that's her name.) I can offer MySQL databases as well

I design and code in HTML only and, like you Thursdayschild, used to rely on Webs.com for their 'advanced mode' compatibility. Leadhoster isn't unlike it and is better too
