I have my own personal views on this subject, but I was curious about the members of this forum.
Before we start discussing, I would like to give a friendly reminder. We all have different opinions and even if we don't agree with them, we must respect them at all times. But I believe that the majority of the members on this forum don't need to be reminded of that.
________________________________________________________________________ Specific Question:
Do you think that violent/explicit /vulgar video games and music causes adolescents to become aggressive or even homicidal? ________________________________________________________
Personal opinion:
No. I myself enjoy Death metal, metal, hard rock, and (some) rap. Video games with blood and violence are another pass time of mine, but I believe I can safely say that I'm a good kid. I've never even been to detention or been in major trouble.
Thus far, I've never met another person who shares my choice in media that has become "crazed" or homicidal. Now, I've met some want to be bada**es who think they're tough but are soft as kittens realistically.
Furthermore, I've never heard of a good, innocent, and well-mannered child who suddenly started going crazy after using such media.

Please supply your opinions and if you disagree or agree, please state why.

Only a complete moron with little to no morals or common sense could be turned homicidal by "violent" music or videogames. Seriously, that's the dumbest accusation I've ever heard for reasons a person became homicidal.

Ohhh this argument. I could go on forever haha.
NO. Violent video games do not make you violent - people that use that excuse whenever they're convicted of anything are trying to push the blame for their own stupid actions on something else and not take responsibility. It really pisses me off whenever I see someone blaming music/video games/movies for "inspiring" them (I read a story where some kid used the show Dexter as a jumping point to murder someone wtf) to do horrible actions and then the media runs with it. People that commit these kind of crimes already have something wrong with them, otherwise they would not happen - the kid that murders his parents because they took away his Halo didn't do it because the game told him to, he did it because he was already at that snapping point from a number of factors. The game did not teach him to be violent.
Honestly, I have never met one person in all my years playing video games that ever became violent because of the game. For me, games like God of War help RELIEVE stress. There's nothing like wailing on a skeleton knight when I'm in a bad mood, HAHA. Granted, I don't play games like Call of Duty (imo it's a stupid series, churning out the same game under a different name every year) or really a lot of shooters, so I can't say anything there really, but all this attention over GTA, God of War, Killzone, etc etc by parents that are TOO LAZY TO PARENT THEIR OWN KIDS AND TEACH THEM RIGHT AND WRONG just rubs me the wrong way.
It all comes down to people acting responsible and not like total ass hats. If you don't want your kid to play the game, if you don't want to play the game, then don't. Don't ruin the fun for everyone else that enjoys these type of things.

I dont believe that violent video games alone turn adults violent or homicidal. Sometimes people do imitate games, however I believe they had the tendencies long before playing those kinds of games. In children however, I do believe that games greatly influence things that they do. They dont understand the difference between games and real life at times. All in all, I dont see any harm that games can do as long as you use common sense with who plays them.

I've been playing Grand Theft Auto since I was like 10/11 years old when I used to visit my cousin's house and it's never influenced me to commit any crimes. Usually I just drive around like a normal person on GTA though, ya know, stopping at traffic lights, etc. I'm just too cool ;-)

All in all, I dont see any harm that games can do as long as you use common sense with who plays them. There's a reason for game ratings. Young children shouldn't be playing rated M games, technically. However, I think if they have a good understanding of IT'S A GAME, NOT REAL LIFE (which can be supplied by you, the parent)... it's not that big of a deal. My brother is 10; he's been playing fighting games & shooters (such as CoD) for years. He has a perfectly good understanding of real life and games and would never, ever think of running out and shooting somebody because ~call of duty nazi zombies taught him to~. :p

Read this whole thread, and you'll see my opinion about this said better than I could put it~ this. [assuming your opinion is that violent games don't make people violent~] Also, same things with sex-related stuff. No, I will not become a sex-crazed, sleazy hooker when I grow up just because I listen to Panic! At the Disco and 3OH!3 and stuff like that. p:

My opinion is pretty simple:
No, it doesn't cause you to become violent. Be it music, video games, or other media. It can incite violence in an already violent person, but they already had a problem.

Yeah, true, but a lot of their first songs are about sex/stripping/etc. which really bothers my mom. Ahaha. :C

Seriously, that's the dumbest accusation I've ever heard for reasons a person became homicidal. ^ Venn, m'dear, you make my life. Bwahaha, I laugh every time something like this ends up in the news. It's a really idiotic and ludicrous concept, to say the least. Let's see; I think I was five years old when I was first introduced to Grand Theft Auto by my cousin. He had every single game (and still does) ever existing with the GTA name in it. Sure, you deal drugs, run people over, outrun the cops, steal, kill, rape, get drunk, etc, in the game, but I think we've both turned out okay. It's just a game. And that's all it is. It'll never be reality. I've never once had a thought of doing any of those things (rationally, speaking). I guess the thought that violence in video games/music/tv/film creates homicidal maniacs is just an old wives' tale. People fear what they don't understand. Clearly, they don't understand that it's just a game. P:

If a parent can't teach a child that violence, fowl language, sexual content, and other such social anomalies are a bad thing by the age appropriate for the video games, it is the parents' fault and not the game/creators' faults. By the time a child is age appropriate for violent, sexual, or verbal games, they should have a proper set of morals, values, and etiquette instilled on them, and by the appropriate age to play such games, these things we teach our kids have already been imprinted enough that a game, tv show, music lyric, or other children should not have such a major influence on them because 'They know better'.
Yes, I agree that peer pressure and such things exist, and can turn a child towards certain things, but even with peer pressure, I think a huge part of that lays on a parent teaching their child that fitting in is not the answer, and ensuring their child lives a full, enjoyable life before being subject to the "mind changers" in the world. All kids stray, but not at the fault of anyone but the child and the parents.
