So, petit-fleurs, I'm not exactly sure if this is the right place for this, but I feel it's time for a little discussion!
After FINALLY discovering the trick to recolouring eyelids - from a help thread in this lovely forum, no less (who'd have thought you had to use 'Restore Orginal Colours', eh?) - I've been diligently changing the lids of all my personal mixed crew to match their fur. Cats and dogs alike, they've all had the same treatment. I'd been meaning to do this for ages, but I was far too lazy to actually look up how to do it. Until now.
The thing is, I really love the look of 'selfie' lids. I love them SO VERY MUCH INDEEDICUS that, when I'm breeding, it can often make the difference whether a pet is a keeper or a reject. It really matters. I know that others choose to hex eyelids black or leave them be, but for me, selfie and matching is the way to go. Black lids can often look a bit harsh against certain coat colours and patterns (particularly whites and creams), and I'd rather choose a complimentary shade that the dog or cat would have chosen himself. You know?
Yes, when selfie lids occur naturally that is totally faboo and fantastic, and it feels like a real achievement; but that being said, it's such a rare occurrence that it isn't always feasible to leave everything to luck and chance. Personally I'm prepared to hex to get what I'm after. But I very, very rarely see other people doing this, and I guess what I'm wondering in a very roundabout sort of way is... well, why? Is it too time-consuming? Is it too selfish?
After all, when you think about it, it's kind of cheating. Essentially you're playing at God. You're playing around with something that's a result of several hundred generations' worth of talented, patient breeding. Which is why I'd never do the same with purebred Petz. I just wouldn't. People have spent days and weeks and months on purebred, non-inbred breeding projects just trying to get the same effect. So that really would, in my opinion, be thoughtless and selfish.
For my personal breeding crew of high-gen mixies, however, I know for a fact now that I'll carry on doing it. Certainly. Colour mutations are so varied and random here that you could potentially breed solidly for weeks and still not find what you're looking for. When you have the power to change it, then it just seems a bit silly not to. And my selfie-lidded Petz are looking marvellous, so I don't regret it for one moment. And if those beautified eyelids keep them from the MPA pile, where's the harm in that?
Petzy article brought to you by Becca, in conjunction with Patty, Viper, Vilanelle, Rebus, Squash and Wick. Because yeah, we're just that cool.
