I currently have 5, and i think thats my limit. I think you should have as many cats as you can care for, and also pay attention to. Four of my cats are ex-barn strays with various levels of anti-social behaviors, and they still require individual attention. Putting down food, and cleaning litter boxes and what-not is good basic care, but i think a personal limit should be set at however many you can give personal attention to on a daily basis.
(Of course, my limit of five may be low because of all the other animals i have ^_^ )

Umm, none of the above?
My opinion is : When you can no longer provide proper food, accommodations, health care, and sufficient attention to each individual pet you are currently in possession of, you have too many. For some people one cat is too much to handle, for others, they can have ten without a problem. Some individuals can financially support and provide appropriate room for several dozen animals, where someone may not even be able to afford one or have room for one.
So really.. it depends on the individual's current life and abilities.

^ =O but my babies are an exception, yush? xD
But yeah I kinda agree with Ela. If your set up in a small house or something I wouldn't advise more than one or two cats at a time. Luckily enough our house is kinda bigish 3 bredroom but the rooms are like huge ._. I always have six cats in my room at night lol so its good to have lots of space if your considering two or more cats, well cats like their space anyways so eh >_>;

Well. I'm normally not so much of a cat person, but I have two now and I love them to bits. I thought cats could care less about having a companion -- I was wrong. My two kitties, who are brothers, absolutely love each others. They play together all the time, groom, sleep together... they're so cute. They're also very affectionate and playful with us. Quite attention-seeking even. So, taking into account my own experience, I would say 2 cats is a perfect number because, not only can they keep each others company and have special kitty-to-kitty interactions, but that's also not so many that we can't give a lot of attention to both of them. I feel that if I had more, I would have to divide my attention/petting/play time between too many, and therefore not be able to give enough quality time to each. Not to mention the cost of vet care, food, litter, oh and the delightful smell of baking litterboxes on a warm summer day

Not everybody can be a cat person. :3 I think I'm largely adamant that my personal limit will be two, while Josh can have his Russian Blue. I'm definitely a cat fan, but foremost I'm an animal lover, so I'll probably have my focus spread over multiple pets (my aquarium, the cats, dog(s), and bird). My house may very well take on a zoo-like appearance. :P

My house may very well take on a zoo-like appearance. :P Mine will too... or already does? My friends refer to my house as "Ela's Ark". I am in the process of upping my numbers again, with a rabbit and a few mice... I'd have chickens if they were not banned (as per municipal bylaw).

I would say "You can never have enough cats!" but at one point I had 6 cats (it was a little hectic haha) so.. I think around 3 is a good number.

personally, I think the number depends on how many you yourself can handle and give attention. Some people cant take care of very many at once, while others are perfectly capable of taking care of numerous pets at once with no problems Well said, Kenzie. Like Spell said, I know all about Russian Blues..for a reason. My numbers are great, but they're all healthy, well cared for and the house isn't a wreck like hoarders houses tend to be. We do have several litterboxes, including two that automtically clean themselves, it's a lifesaver.

I would say, start off with one or two, if you feel you can handle more, get another. But, don't go out and buy like, 10 at once xD
Before you get them, talk to the breeder and find out if they can be housed with other cats or whether they just fight ;3

My boyfriend has three cats. They are horrible little monsters though, which destory every thing. His male cat is pretty good but his two female cats are just horrible. He told me, before he was with me he had tons and tons of cats. To the point he didn't know the number because they kept have'n babies and held kept finding homeless cats and taking them home. Now thats a little too extreme if you ask me, and couldn't of been healthy for him or the cats.
His three cats drive me nuts most the time, but i put up with them 'cause their cute. I've own one cat. He was an indoor outdoor cat, picked up as a stray and owned him for five years. He was a good kittie cat, but I was only with just him, no more than one.

you can never have enough cats.. just like you can never have enough animals. I personally think this is a selfish way to think about it... The more you have, the less quality time and attention you can give to each individually People shouldn't just think of their own enjoyment or desire to have many pets, but mostly about the pets themselves in my opinion.

Which is why I think your ability to maintain the quality of life for the quantity of pets you have comes into play.

Agreed, Ela and RQ. While I would kill to be able to breed my bettas again, I know that at this time I wouldn't be able to care for the fry AND keep up with my school work and all my other fish. Same thing goes for cats.
