Canis Lupus Familiaris is one of my favourites. Well... my favourite! ;D You many study then think none of these are related but the fact is Canis Lupus is Dog Wolf. Canis = Dog Lupus = Wolf I think...

Dingos are technically dogs; they went feral on Australia after they were abandoned by early colonists.
And I dunno if Canis really means dog... it's just a genus type that lumps all of those animals together in a family group, since they're all related in some way.
But... I like domesticated dogs and wolves, haha. Coyotes, not so much; they run rampant in my neighborhood and it's kinda scary to go out walking at night and they just suddenly APPEAR.

Wolves.
Though I've always had a thing for Dingos. You can't really classify them as dogs, I don't think. Not anymore. I mean, they are canines and they may have came from domesticated dogs...but then again, domesticated dogs came from wolves *shrugs*

Just because they look the same doesn't mean they're the same thing, hah. Red wolves look like coyotes but they're not D:
I always thought of Dingos as feral dogs D: ...Cute feral dogs that I wanted as a kid, until I realized they dragged off babies :[

Note; I may be wrong but...
I'm not sure these are all real animals.. =/ Canis Lupus is the Grey Wolf, a subspieces of wolf. And the Ethiopian Wolf is Canis Simensis. The Golden Jackal, Black-backed Jackal, Domestic Dogs, and Coyote are not wolf subspieces. I believe they are as follows;
Golden Jackal - Canis Aureus Black-Backed Jackal - Canis Mesomelas Domestic Dogs - Canis Familiaris Coyote - Canis Latrans
I was also pretty sure Dingos weren't wolf subspieces, but I looked it up in various places on the internet and in books and almost all the sientific names were Canis Lupus Dingo. Some were Canis Familiaris Dingo, but that would mean that a Dingo is a domesticated dog.. I don't think that's quite right.. =/ And Canis Lupus Lupus is in fact a Grey Wolf, but it is a subspecies called a Eurasian Grey Wolf. Arg! Too many subspecies! D=
Anyway, I'd say I like Grey wolves and Ethiopian Wolves the best =)
Oh, and Neco; Canis means 'Dog' and Lupus means 'Wolf' in Latin =)

^I realize that, but looking up the genus name I got myself confused lol xD
I thought dogs were descended from wolves; this is what I learned in my Anthro class, and they're usually classified as Canis Lupus Familiaris... or however you spell it, hahaha. 10,000+ years of domestication can really change an animal lol

Actually, the dingo is indeed a descendant of the domestic dog. It would actually be classified as a Feral dog.
And you are right about the species names. The "Lupus" part can just be overlooked. ^_^

Wait...dogs weren't domesticated from wolves? But then where did we get domesticated dogs from? Everything I have ever read says that dogs are descendants from wolves. I mean sure, thousands of years have probably passed...but I thought that was how it happened.

They are descended from wolves. I believe what was said above was that dogs are not a subspecies of wolf. Which is true. Dogs are their own species. But their ancestors were wolves.
And as a side note about Dingos... because of interbreeding with dogs, purebred dingos are actually on the verge of extinction (within 50 years some sources say). Today, they are closer to dogs (genetically speaking) than they have been or thousands of years.

My dad had a Dingo when he was a teenager. Well they were pretty sure it was a Dingo. It was just a stray dog that came out of nowhere, and chased around their horses, and they named him Dingo, and then he got hit by a car D:
