I was just wondering what peoples thoughts were on playing with your pets with laser pointers.. like getting them to chase it and stuff..
i know that i played once with one with my dog and he followed it all over the place..

I'm on the fence about it;
Its one way you can easily figure out if your dog has seizures, for one. My mom's old dog was fine with laser pointers and then suddenly he became aggressive (which was later determined as a seizure) whenever the pointer moved even the slightest bit too quick. I have also had dogs who landed up harming themselves as result to the light "disappearing" from their sight, as much as bite at walls and get damaged teeth, claw at walls until their nails were bleeding, and even go into a fit of panic. Its not common, But I have seen it happen.
Then the other side of the fence, I have seen a lot of dogs who have no issues resulting from them. I do think the way people play with the laser pointer to be cruel (like some people with make the animal chase the light across the floor and turning it off right at the wall... making the animal slide into it. I guess, if used properly and with dogs who won't be mentally effected by it (you should know your dog well enough) then they aren't horrible, i just don't use 'em personally (especially now with Char's new health prob).

I used to play laser with the cats, just running it along the floor letting them catch it once in a while but they soon grew sick off that and now are all for playing torch tag xD

It depends on the animal. My pets chase it and they have a good time and when it's done it's done. Some dogs are obsessed with it and they are constantly looking for it and they hurt themsleves or others trying to find where it went. We have a dog at the shelter that is always looking for the flashlight and she chases shadows. We decided to never play with her with it again because she gets so upset.. it's not fair to her.

I don't mind it at all.
My cats play with it, as well as one dog. The other couldn't care less. The dog who does play with it gets a little obsessed, but has never hurt herself or damaged anything from "attacking" it or looking for the dot when it is gone.
As long as people use their heads (as in, think about what the animal's reactions are and how they could go) when they are playing, then it should be fine.

My dogs love it. They chase it on the floor, if I put it on the wall they'll jump on their hind feet to get it. They've never really been hurt besides a few collisions with each other. They normally bump into walls on their own anyway so I don't think there's much upstairs anyway lol

I don't really care, but you have to be careful about not putting it in the animal's eye, or it will burn away part of their retina.

My friend's lab chases it and it's the funniest thing in the world, haha. He's never hurt himself or gotten overly excited about it; he's just silly and chases anything we throw, lol.
Also had another friend that had a cat that loved that thing and would bat it off the table as a sign he wanted to play. He'd use it to exercise the cat since it was an indoor cat and wasn't too fond of the other kitty in the house, haha.

Char LOVES them. To an insane extent. Which is strange because he has low prey drive in most situations.
I actually bought a really nice one for the cats for christmas but I lost it somewhere in my mother's place, so they have to wait a bit to get to play with it. ;D

My kitty loves them! ^.^ Sometimes the dog gets a little weirded out when he's trying to climb the door. lol. However, if you have any small children in the house they can be dangerous. My boyfriend's brother came over with his two kids (ages 5 and 7), and the youngest one went straight for the laser pointer and shined poor Darkness right in the face. Those things can blind people/animals! Kids just don't think before they act. =P Grr.

To be truthful I don't mind them but I hate it when my little sister gets Kookie going its soooo bad. The others tend to ignore it after awhile but Kookie she becomes obessed with it say if it was on the wall last she'll sit looking at the same spot for hours crying until it shows up again >_<* but when she's chasing it she gets way over excited and starts breathing way to heavy so I usually make my sister not do it anymore and don't let anyone annoy her with torches or laser pointers anymore because it drives her up the wall trying to find them. So they stick to the normal cat nip and jingly toys

My two cats absolutely looove playing with laser lights! As soon as they hear the sound of the thing dingling, they look on the floor -- so cute I had a dog who quickly became completely obsessed with it though (my fault, really). Once I said the word "little light", there was absolutely nothing you could do to get the laser light out of her mind. She would have run into an incoming train if that's where the laser was. I voted neutral, because I think it's a fun game for pets, if used in moderation and responsibly (unlike I did with my dog). The kitties seem to be fine with it -- if the light's available, let's go for it, if it's not, oh well

^ Chubby, hahah xD.
I got one and my cat was interested in it for about 5 seconds and then she decided she wanted to chew on herself so she got tired of the lazer xDD.
