Often times when I see someone adopting out petz they ask that you keep a few letters in their name or something if you use them in shows. Similarly, I see people list both a long and short name when they enter them in contests. Why is this? Is it so people know who breed each pet or something?
Sorry if this is a dumb question I'm new to the fandom.

The letters are a prefix, if you show them, it shows what kennel or cattery they come from.
As for show names, much like real life showing, it's a lot easier when you're talking to your dog to call them by their name, such as Molly. But also, there are a bunch of Mollys out there in the world, so a show name makes that distinction, plus it can show titles, owner/breeder, and even a sense of humor. If we just used call names, well, we wouldn't know which Molly got which place if there are multiple in the show.

Its one of my favorite things about joining this community x3 its just so fun!
Prefixes from people you adopt appear in the Showname! So its like everyone knows that breeder was responsible for that beautiful pet.

think of it also like a wonderful chance to inject some absurdity into things. for me part of the fun is thinking up a show name that pertains to a particular theme, going off the call name. for example, my first generation breeding pair is named Oberon and Titania - after the two characters, king and queen of the faeries, in A Midsummer Night's Dream. so i got to say "oh cool, now i can look at the play and come up with something that sounds really rad", thus Titania's show name is DNC Ill Met By Moonlight. if you've ever watched a dog show or even a horse race, you'll see that a lot of the critters have really silly names. now, it's a bit of a mouthful to yell out these things. but iirc the real-world historical precedence here is that everyone wants their show animals, or race horses, to have a unique name. this way it's a lot less confusing when you're looking at pedigrees or doing registration. but of course the long names are a huge mouthful. you don't actually want to be yelling "C'MON, dnc's ill met by moonlight, GET OFF THE COUNTER", y'know? so the call name is what you'd use at home. for horses, this is also sometimes called a stable name. so even though you don't actually yell at your petz any, we still emulate this pattern. it's a fine tradition of silly names to participate in, too! my favourite has to be en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potoooooooo LOL
