I discovered videos about it and I fell in LOVE with Petz 5, though the community is more Petz 4 focused. I feel left out because there is more content for Petz 4, and when there is Petz 5 content, there is a Petz 4 version too, or it's a unibreed if it is a breed almost always. I discovered Oddballz, and I wanted sort of an Oddballz in Petz also. I can do that, but it seems like there is not quite enough content to have the experience be as complete as possible. Sorry about my rambling. Also, most people use Petz 4 along with Petz 5 to get a full experience of the community's creations, or even a few JUST use Petz 4.

mandymom Petz 5 is my favorite too. It's nice that all the P3 and P4 petz work in Petz 5, but it's sad there is no backwards compatibility. So less people adopt P5 petz. So my story is Petz 5 was one of the first computer games I played. I was maybe 5 years old, not sure, I just know P5 came out when I was 6 months old I think? So I would play the game. I would always adopt 2 dogz and 2 catz because I wanted babies. But eventually I would end up with liters from each, which was really fun. However, there were tok many petz to care for with my short attention span. I was always afraid they'd run away and would stop opening the game before that. I had also lost the discs about 3-5 times during my life, and was also so happy to see I could still buy the game. I actually just lost my P5 and Zoo Tycoon 2 discs (for like, more than a year) and just found them in an obvious sopt! I have this thing where stuff needs to be in it's designated place, but game discs always get switched around in their cases. So I also never had hexies of Petza when little because I didn't know anyting about installing stuff and was afraid it would mess up my computer. But now I'm cool with that, and play lots of P3 because those petz work in all versions. P5 will still be my favorite, especially because of liter size. Though I try no to inbred. And CatCreature, I didn't get to read the whole thing but why is adding Petz expansions, just hexed petz, wrong? I know people mod tons of games like Minecraft and more that aren't so much for modding, so just wondering.

I love this thread and reading all your stories! ^^ But jeeze.. you all are making me feel old. ;-; haha
I first started playing Catz 1 when my mom found a demo of it, I think on a "best games for Windows 95" type of disk.. Back in.. yes, 1995 and I was 7 years old. All you could do was play with the 5 catz, but you couldn't adopt them in the demo. My sister and I loved it so much, she later bought the full game for us. I played Catz 1 until Petz 4 was released. xD My first petz adopted in P4 were from 1999. My sister did play for a while with me, we had so much fun throwing snowballs at Mitzy (the snow scene host cat), and painting our petz and dressing them up, and breeding weird mixies... I still have some of these old petz. ^^ I remember there were so many awesome petz sites on yahoo, homestead, geocities.. with tons of downloadable petz and new clothes and toys. Sand'z Cattery was my number one favorite site! Wendy had so many unique mixies up for download!
Then came Petz5. My parents surprised me one Christmas with both Catz5 and Dogz5, and that was all I wanted to play for awhile. I had moved all of my beloved petz to the new game, and LOVED the updated graphics. (Especially the backyard. xD) Having litters was really cool, and the mini-game with the knight ("rock, paper, scissors", I think? - haven't played in a long time LOL) was really fun. The day/night cycles and weather is a really neat addition too..It wasn't until I got more into the Petz Community, and visiting new petz sites that arose and lurking around forums, that I realized most petz players didn't like the new Petz5, and some were completely against it, and wouldn't even talk to people who had P5 petz to offer. :c I wanted my site to still get visitors, and be able to share petz with as many people as I could, and the only way was if I played and bred petz in P4. So, I downgraded. xD I still play with my P5 pets, but all of my crew/breeding pets are in P4.
Plus, after going back to P4, Petz5 has certain qualities that I don't like too much.. There's no playpen (though I "made" one using the editor), my collected seashells would be permanently added to the travel case and would loose their "collectors edition" quality so to speak.. (before EC Rose's fix) the flowers you grow in the garden couldn't be added to the carrying case, therefore making the vase useless in any other play scene.. I hate the salon.. I do all my breeding in the Clothes Closet in P4, and the P5 salon has no room to walk/run around in.. and there's no travel diary. I LOVE the travel diary! LOL
I do have hopes that either myself or someone else will find a way to successfully convert a P5 pet back to P4.. And I'm not talking about making a 1st gen. clone. I've been experimenting off/on for over a year with this. xD That way, all of my first adopted petz could move back to P4, and this would open a gateway for Petz5 players to adopt out to everyone! c:

🌠 Aubrey we're the same age, if that helps; I think I was also seven or so when my dad showed me Dogz 1 because I was an obsessive dog nut, and I adopted a mutt and named it after my real dog and played for a bit. But I didn't get really into it until Dogz II. That's when I started playing daily, and soon after that I figured out how the Internet worked and had a small handful of downloads, including the official Petz.com ones. I was still playing Dogz II well into P3 (and being a really dumb kid couldn't understand for a while why my petz wouldn't breed when all these people online were having litters everywhere). Eventually my friend got P3 and lent me the disks since back then you didn't need them to play the game, but then I broke it when I tried to change my computers colors or something and was petzless for a while. I think I got Dogz IV for Christmas when that came out, too. I also know I bought P5 when that was out but I never liked it as well, between the minigames and how buggy it can be it drove me a bit crazy. I was a young teen by then so I think I was embarrassed enough to be playing the same game I'd played as a tiny lass, so I wanted one I could play with some level of efficiency. I didn't get into the PC until relatively recently, though, last few years. I'd pop into forums once in a while but none of them really stuck. I also remember getting in trouble multiple times when I was like 11 for going into Petz chat rooms. I also remember trying to enter some shows now and again and getting super upset when someone mixed up my dog & cat entries because, you know, I labelled them wrong and somehow they were supposed to know that. What keeps bringing me back to Petz, even now, is the petz themselves. They have such personality, they're unfailingly cute (even the uglies!) and they're just so dang lovable. I love other stuff--hexies, downloadable toys and playscenes, and all you lovely people--but that's what kept making me reinstall it now and again throughout my life. I'll probably be a little old lady trying to get Petz 4 installed in the holodeck or whatever and getting cranky that it keeps crashing. tl;dr: My petz history is also a history of gumdrop being a really dumb kid, repeatedly, and shall lead to me being a dumb octogenarian as well someday.

CatCreature Found the thread you meant now. First bit is basically a misunderstanding about what was essentially a mod pack with a self installer; the same way that the official downloads are self installers. No big deal but (and I haven't read it all) the rest looks like the start of the Relo drama so lets not go there and I'm sorry I asked. XD Yeaaaah. Another reason I didn't want to link the thread. It also gets derailed and would derail THIS one all the more. xD That there is a whole different story. ...and when there is Petz 5 content, there is a Petz 4 version too, or it's a unibreed if it is a breed almost always. I get feeling frustrated about nobody playing P5, P5 used to be my favorite too and I felt the same back then, but I don't see why this particular part of your post is a problem. What's wrong with there being P5 content for P4 too? Or having a Unibreed, so everyone can enjoy it? And CatCreature, I didn't get to read the whole thing but why is adding Petz expansions, just hexed petz, wrong? I know people mod tons of games like Minecraft and more that aren't so much for modding, so just wondering. Did you get to read what I said about it? Not sure which part you did and didn't read, but I basically explained what the thread was about in another post...here: Basically what happened was... Reloaded was going to make an 'expansion', which was going to involve the PC community coming together to make a bunch of hexed stuff, and it would all be released to people. She posted threads on PCG, RKC, and AAP asking for volunteers that wanted to help. AAP and RKC deleted her topics, and on AAP she was supposedly accused of doing all of this illegally. She then posted on PCG, telling everybody that she couldn't continue with this because people thought it was illegal. She got TONS of backup on PCG, people saying how PetzA and hexing are also technically 'illegal', but there's been no issues with that. And another person said that maybe Relo was misunderstood after using the term 'expansion'. Maybe the mods at AAP thought she was going to be making money from this, or something. So she changed to calling it The Project, and started work on it again. But then she quit...for different reasons, supposedly health. I guess that was about the same time she quit the PC altogether. So she DIDN'T actually shut it all down for fear of legal problems...I'd forgot that was the same time she claimed to be having health problems. Well...take from this story what you will. xD Sorry if I've derailed this topic, I just wanted to make sure you wouldn't get into any trouble. Does that answer it? xD Sorry for adding more off-topic stuff here. :X

CatCreature ^^I actually did read that part but totally missed the money thing, and how they thought she did it for money. But I guess like you said it was not actually a legal issue, and was stopped because of health problems. So I think I got it now, even if my explanation above was off xD thanks! But back on topic, I just realized I have no idea how I found out about these games, nor do I think any of my friends played it :/

I don't know how I came to possess Petz II, but that's where I started. I had a dog named MMM (I was young and names meant nothing to me lol) who was a mutt I'd painted cream. It was one of my favorite computer games on my first computer, along with Jezzball and a few other super old games. XD In the early 2000's, I found Petz 5 at a book store or something and was like... "MY GAME!" I missed out on 3 and 4 until I bought 4 on ebay a few years back. In the era of Petz 5, I got it for my grandparents and my friends at the time. I made my parents and my sister play as well. PETZ FOR EVERYONE. Not much has changed, I guess, as I still make my family play from time to time or show them bred petz or hexes I'm particularly proud of. While they really only play it to make me happy nowadays, they think it's a pretty stinkin' cool game as well.

I can expand on this later, but I got into Petz when I was probably around 6 or 7. Back then, my parents would take me to Toys'R'Us every year on my birthday and they would buy me anything I wanted. Sometimes they'd give me a budget to work with, and I remember the one time I spent like $400 there. The closest one was like an hour and a half away so it was a HUGE part of my year! I remember the day I was back in the [then very tiny] video games section, and I saw these large boxes with dogs and cats on them. They said "Dogz 4" and "Catz 4" and there were even stuffed animals that went with them. I got both, and that's where the madness started, lol. I even still have the boxes and stuffed animals (back then they had the B&W Shorthair and Mutt toys but I recently found out they also made the Bulldog and another, I think the Persian). I lost my Dogz 4 disc but I still have the Catz 4 one. That game really stuck with me. After playing that for years, I found out about Dogz 5, and I actually had it pre-ordered for the day it came out, and I loved the game even more from that day on. As I grew up I got more and more into showing, and had a PKC kennel up until 2007 when I was 17. Then one terrible day, my hard drive died. Completely. And I had no way of backing anything up back then. I was devastated. After that, I graduated high school and I completely forgot about Petz. Then just this year, I got back into it. I'm not sure what drove me to do it but I think I found my old Dogz 5 disc and tried very hard to get it running on my Windows 7 machine, lol. But I did it and I've been nuts about Petz ever since. I found Catz 5 on eBay for like $3 so now I have both versions and not just Dogz. Here's a photo of my boxes that I dug out of my closet a few months ago.

I could've sworn it was EC Rose who had made separate files for each of the flowers so that they can appear in the P5 carrying case by themselves (and have infinite flowers wherever you go! ^^)... I can't seem to find it on her site at all though. I'm gonna have to go searching for this. Maybe it wasn't EC Rose who made these.. <edit> I did manage to find an old thread from RKC.. May I link it here? It looks like these flowers were on a site called The Light Fantastic, but it's now gone offline. What a shame, maybe these flowers are something I could host on my site then? <edit 2> Found them in my game.. they're actually just the seed boxes that overwrite the originals and include the flowers separate in the carrying case. I also found black, gold and blue roses, pumpkins and mushrooms, that I think are all from the same site?

I had a plush dog from the series as well. I thought he was cute, but not very cuddly because he had a hard collar and a battery compartment (he made sounds when you fed him xD) so I gave him away when I was still a kid. I regret it too. I'm thinking about hexing him on Petz sometime though, since he didn't actually look like any of the original breeds!
