Is anybody voting in the Steam Awards? If so, what did you vote for and why? They're in the home stretch now, with only 5 nominees left in each category. Here are some of my votes: Labor of Love: No Man's SkyThis game, which I love for its sci-fi theme and wonderful procedurally-generated open world, was hyped to death before its release in 2016, and had one of the most disastrous releases in the history of gaming, gathering an "Overwhelmingly negative" rating on Steam in no time flat. Today, it has a "Very positive" rating due the incredible dedication of its developer, Hello Games. Although they could have run with the money and forget about the game, they instead continued to work on it diligently, releasing major free updates, and continuing to do so to this day, more than 2 years later. If that doesn't deserve the "Labor of Love" award, I don't know what does! Most Fun with a Machine: Euro Truck Simulator 2With a total of 303 hours played on this game and counting, I think it's safe to say I've had fun with this machine! While I personally don't have an interest in trucks per se, I love simulation games because I find them relaxing (which is something I seek in my gaming). Moreover, I love driving through the varied and beautifully recreated European landscapes and cities in this game -- it helps soothe my longing for Europe (I also love American Truck Simulator, by SCS Software as well). Best Environment: SubnauticaI have to say I hesitated giving it to The Witcher 3, which I love and is also nominated for this category, but Subnautica won my heart and my vote. I absolutely ADORED Subnautica, with its original underwater sci-fi theme, imaginative alien fauna and flora, dreamy landscapes, submarines, and colorful graphics! I truly felt I was on another planet while playing it. One of my all time favorites. Best Developer: CD Projeckt RedBecause they believe in DRM-free, are the owners of GOG, makers of The Witcher series that I love, and produce DLC that's actually worth the price of admission. The other nominees didn't really deserve my vote (sorry Rockstar, GIMME Red Dead on PC and we will talk again!!) EDIT: also LEGO The Lord of the Rings FREE on Humble Bundle right now for 2 days, while supplies last! (make sure to register your Steam key to your account right away, while it's still valid!)

Some of my reasons are a bit lame but here you go: Game of the Year: Haven't played any of them so went for the one I'm interested in which is Monster Hunter World.
VR Game of the Year: Again I don't have a VR set up but if I was going to play something it would have to be Skyrim as I love the original.
Labor of Love: Stardew Valley, no contest. Brilliant game which they are still updating for free including multiplayer which was added this year plus extra bits of storylines for some of the characters and a few other hidden things.
Best Developer: I went with Paradox Interactive because of Cities Skylines although technically they are the publisher. I know some people don't like their DLC policy but I think they are fairly priced compared to other companies (EA and Capcom I'm looking at you) and they have good communication with the community. Bethesda have had a terrible year so I hope they don't win despite my love of Skyrim and Capcom have cheesed me right off with the way the Street Fighter franchise is headed but then I voted for Monster Hunter World which they made so Best Environment: I've only played Subnautica (briefly)(BTW it's free if you sign up and download the Epic Game Launcher and once installed you don't need to use the launcher to run the game) so I went with that. The Witcher III looks cool though and I may have chosen that if my PC could run it.
Better with Friends: I went with Overcooked 2 purely because I received the first game in the recent Team 17 Humble Bundle and I'm excited to play it with my daughter during the Christmas period.
Best Alternate History: I went with Civilization VI because Civ V wasn't on the list.
Most Fun with a Machine: I've played Rocket League but I get motion sickness so I stopped playing that. I ended up voting for Factorio because I've been following it's development forever, it could probably do with the extra votes and the game is literally about using machines in the most efficient way possible.
~~~~~~~~~~
On a bit of a tangent Origin are having a Christmas sale right now and Sims 4 expansion are 50% off including Get Famous! Game Packs are 25% off and all of the Stuff packs are 40% off which is a rare event for Stuff packs so I grabbed a few of those.
Thanks for the heads up about Lego Lord of the Rings btw. I completely blanked and thought they were still advertising The Hobbit giveaway which is silly now I think about it.
^^ I haven't played any of the nominated games for game of the year either. I went with Assassin's Creed, just because I like the colorful graphics, lol!
I played Stardew Valley a long time ago. I liked it quite a bit. I wasn't aware of the continued support and additions to the game.
I have Cities Skyline but, for some reason, never played it a whole lot. I never bought any of the DLC because way too expensive for me, even when it's on sale (sales are never low enough).
I went to look at Origin's site to see if I could finally get me some Sims 4, but oh boy is it still super expensive even on sale!! I think I'm done buying Sims anything. I want a hybrid Sims 2-3!
Oh, how fun! I didn't have very informed answers for some categories, but for Labor of Love, I voted for Path of Exile, because I've been playing since the year it launched, and the developers have worked so very hard over the years, and every update surpasses the one before it in quality! GGG is very devoted to the game.
For VR Game of the Year, I chose Skyrim VR over Fallout 4 VR, because FO4 VR suffered from serious game-breaking performance issues for many, many months without support or even a word from Bethesda, while Skyrim VR worked smoothly right out of the box. With VR, performance completely makes or beaks a game!
But for Best Alternate History, I voted for Fallout 4, because I'm trash.
Has anybody tried the game called Niche - a genetics survival game? It's currently 40% on sale in the Steam Autumn Sale that just started, which is its lowest price ever so far. I'm THIS close to finding a valid excuse to add it to my "Christmas gifts to myself" list, which is growing dangerously... Did you ever get this game? Its in the winter sale now and I'm tempted...
I got Niche a few months ago when it was on sale. It is so addicting, challenging, and cute! I definitely recommend it. You really have to pay attention to what genes your animals have and how it affects their survival. It is one of my favorite games at the moment.
Did you ever get this game? Its in the winter sale now and I'm tempted... Yes, I ended up buying it, and I like it. It's a very strange game that plays a bit like a board game in regards to the placement of the nichelings and the fact it's turned-based, and I really enjoy playing with genetics and exploring. I also like the fact that the islands are procedurally-generated, so you never know exactly what you're going to find when you decide it's time for your little family of chosen ones to move on to the next. Right now though, I'm waaay too much into Slime Rancher to even think of other games! I can't believe I only found out about it now! It's such a colorful, happy, relaxing little game! I love all the exploring, discoveries, building up my slimey ranch and creating hybrid slimes! It's still on sale at 50% on Steam, if anyone's insterested (lowest price it's ever been since its release -- I checked). That's a great game!
EDIT: I'm quoting a few posts from the Shoutbox below, as it was getting too much for discussing there, and I wanted to ask about them:
I adore slime rancher! Though my current obsession from the steam sale is house flipper... just cant stop playing... though i got quite a few games as there so cheap -_-;;; I never got into steam. I've always been, I need a hard copy of a game. But I won an xmas raffle and got £250 worth of vouchers you can only spend in certain shops, ones I don't really use, but one of them did top up cards, so I decided to turn some of the money into steam money. Then... the sale started and i went a liiiiiiiitttle bit crazy... I like games where its resource management or Simulation. Stardew Valley, Oxygen not included, Subnautica, Slime Rancher, JWE. Do you have any suggestions? That's really cool you won that raffle and converted to Steam money!! I don't mind buying digital games, they're often cheaper and don't take any room in my already cluttered house.
I absolutely LOVE Subnautica!!! It's one of my favorites, as I adore the sci-fi theme, underwater landscapes, and imaginative fauna and flora! I like the same kind of games. I'm usually most attracted to open world games where there's a lot of exploration involved, resource management too, and any kind of simulation.
I wonder if you would like No Man's Sky? I love it! (they have added SO MUCH to it since release, I think it's amazing now!) Definitely resource management and lots of exploration.
I'll have to look at my Steam library and wishlist to see if I have other suggestions -- I'm a bit in a rush right now.
I assume JWE is Jurassic World Evolution? It's on my Steam wishlist, too, but I've unfortunately already gone over my gaming budget for Christmas I was wondering if it was good enough to justify the cost (plus I think Frontier has high-priced DLC for the content offered -- same as with Planet Coaster where I haven't been able to afford ANY of the DLC yet, even on sale).
Can you tell me a bit more about House Flipper? Is there enough freedom to do things? I really want that one when it's a little cheaper!
I know how you feel about needing a physical copy of a game...I much prefer that myself, although I do have Steam and use it. I love Stardew Valley! Dunno that it falls under your category, but have you ever tried Starbound? Starbound is one of my FAVORITES. There's so freaking much to explore, it's amazing! I never played Starbound. Actually, I see that I surprisingly marked it as "Ignored" on Steam, for some reason! I think it's the 2D Terraria look that may have put me off, as I never could get into Terraria (but I do like Stardew Valley). Maybe I should take another look at it.
I know! I didn't even enter the raffle! Yet still won... BASICALLY I entered a raffle at work we were holding for charity to win a hugeeee plush dinosaur... the tickets were £1 each, so I got as many as I could with the money in my pocket at the time... which was £3 which just so happened to be the price of the nation wide store wide raffle thing, so my manager who got confused entered me in that one where basically your names got sent off to head office etc and you were entered in a draw. I won! When they told me i won... I thought I was getting that sweet giant plush dinosaur... I didn't even get entered in the raffle to win him T-T See with Subnautica, I love under the ocean kind of things, like in real life and in game, I love documentary about undersea animals, I love endless ocean where you just scuba dive with whales, Abzu is an amazing short game where you just experience an ocean kind of area. I'm a sucker for anything based underwater. I love the designs of the creatures in Subnautica though, and I'm in love my tiny aquarium in my station. I really feel like I should get Stranded Deep... have you played that? Where you crash in the ocean and have to travel to islands and find ship wrecks and survive and not get eaten by a shark or 10.
I'm loving house flipper I just find it really relaxing going around doing up a house, smashing a few walls and cleaning up the dirt... it like gives me the same level of satisfaction as cleaning my own house and seeing something turn from a mess into this nice polished newness. So there's 2 kind of ways to go in it, you have contracts which you have to do the set tasks for the house in each room etc, like you could have paint the walls in hot peach, modify walls and mount items. which you have to do at least 80% of to be able to complete a contract, though I have to go for 100% you can do extra things too in the house as long as the main things are done, but you only have the tools you need to do those tasks in each contracted house... Then the other way is, you also have your own office, you can do anything to your office at all on the inside knock out walls, add extra, paint, change the doors, whatever you've unlocked doing in the contracts you can do in your office, you can then use the money you've been saving doing jobs to buy new houses to do up and sell, or you can move into them and sell your old property's again these you can do anything you've unlocked. Their working on Garden DLC too. Also you unlock things to make life easier, like you can paint 4 panels at once, use 20% less paint, better equipment, faster cleaning and all that jazz.
See, somebody at work also suggested this and I picked up a copy for the PS4 really cheap yesterday just not got around to playing yet due to work. He said that he saved up and got it new and it was a huge disappointment and sold in like 2 days later but recently picked it up again coz they added so much and made it the game it should have been at release, much the same as JWE.
JWE yes is Jurassic World Evolution, my addiction. I have it both on the PS4 and PC. Though the DLC only on PC and the base game 100% completed on my PS4. It is SO good and they have made it so much better with the inclusion of sleeping and herding etc, things that should have been in the game when released, their finally making it the game it should have been. I mean i jumped at the chance to get it for £11 I was so close to just using my vouchers to get it anyway even though i already had it coz I've always wanted it on PC but never had steam. When the sale started i got it in an instant. I don't know if you ever played JPOG (Jurassic Park Operation Genesis) Its like that and Zoo Tycoon together, though with less decorations... though you never know what they will release down the line as its been guaranteed to be worked on for the next 3 years till the next instalment of the movie comes out. I was sad about the DLC prices, though still much cheaper than a Sims expansion or pack, its still quite a price for what it is, though as there very new I think in time they will go down in the sale considerably. I definitely recommend it to anyone who likes dinosaurs and park builders and likes to watch a T Rex eat people... a lot. There's alotttt to do in just the main game, what with all the challenge modes and the original campaign etc
Ill take a look at Starbound! I love Stardew... and any other farming like build your life up game (Story of Seasons, Harvest moon, Little Dragon Cafe, etc)
I'm not against other kind of games, I love RPG's and story based games too, like pokemon, golden sun, dragon quest like games. just with my work load being so hectic this time of year i just sometimes cant get back to it for a while and lose where i am in the story or plot. I also love games like Detroit become human or life is strange where its decision based.
Have you played Goat Simulator, its like my go to game when I'm stressed! I picked it up for the PC for like £1.79 on steam. Just chilling as a goat smacking people into things and blowing stuff up... just like a goat.
I'm also an avid Pokemon Go'er and Jurassic World Alive player xD
I PRETTY MUCH WILL PLAY ANYTHING.
Funnily enough, Starbound reminded me of Minecraft at first. (Only 2D) Because it has the same idea that you can build stuff, but you use square-ish shapes and whatever, but I was never into Minecraft. But the scenery is beautiful and the exploration is REALLY cool! The storyline is basically that Earth is destroyed by a monster, and your character is the only one to survive and escape into space. You have to find help and build up to eventually strike back and destroy the monster. But the cool thing is, there are TONS of planets. I mean, it gives you a map of stars and you can click on a star, and it opens up into like 2-4 planets each. And you can explore any of them, and each planet has a different biome and actual randomized mini monsters to fight, so they're all unique. There are some 'set' monsters that'll always look the same, but even those are cool because eventually you can craft something to catch them, like Pokemon xDD But man I should just like record a bit of it to show you guys, of even just selecting what planet to explore, because there's so much...and it's so hard to do any of it justice. xD I was just wowed by this game, and I adore it. They even made it very easy to mod, so people are making stuff for it all the time! You can collect stuff, build stuff, and do quests for the different alien races you'll find, some will even join your crew on your spaceship... The game doesn't look like much at first but I am absolutely in love with it. <3 There's also multiplayer features between Steam friends, so my sister and I often play it together xD But yeah, I also love games like Pokemon and Harvest Moon/Stardew Valley (since I saw those mentioned) and I also adore Skyrim. I guess the type of games I like kind of vary, depending on my mood. Sometimes I want to focus on a little game with fun stuff to do, like Pokemon/Harvest Moon/Petz, and sometimes I want to get out there and explore, and have adventures, which is usually Starbound/Skyrim xDD Christmas has been torture though. Everything on my Steam wishlist went into a MASSIVE sale (one thing I wanted even dropped to freaking 2 dollars) but we don't have money to spare on games right now. Ratqueen I've briefly seen a little bit of Slime Rancher, but it didn't really seem to grab my attention, but your excitement over it is making me curious...what do you do in that game?
I have Cities Skyline but, for some reason, never played it a whole lot. I never bought any of the DLC because way too expensive for me, even when it's on sale (sales are never low enough). I went to look at Origin's site to see if I could finally get me some Sims 4, but oh boy is it still super expensive even on sale!! I think I'm done buying Sims anything. I want a hybrid Sims 2-3! I ignore most of the smaller DLC for Cities Skylines and just buy the main expansions which for me didn't feel so expensive as I bought them over time but yeah it's a bit overwhelming when you look at the list and I know some people don't like the fact that the game mechanics are divided up in separate packs like that which I can understand.
I think it's pay system, much like The Sims appeals to people who tend to stick to one or two favourite games. For everyone else it is more a case of "You want how much for the complete set?!!"
I actually have a notepad file with the prices I paid for all of the Sims 4 content I own and even though I bought nearly everything on sale over two years it's still a scary looking total for one game. We've played it a lot so it's works out but still. (The first rule about money spent on Sims is; we don't talk about the money we've spent on Sims. XD)
Star ★ Wow congrats on the raffle win. That should set you up for future sales as well. I'll admit I'm having the opposite experience with Subnautica. Being dumped in the middle of the ocean with no sign of help is pretty much my worst nightmare and I'm getting anxious being chased by just the little things and that's before I venture further. Basically I'm a whimp. lol
I'm not sure what I could suggest other than the obvious games. If you want a completely out of left field suggestion the Samorost series of games are on sale. They are a point and click adventure game and on the more surreal side. Very charming, gorgeous artwork, fun, relaxing. Just a charming journey from start to finish. (also not very long if you are pressed for time)
Also try Botanicula by the same company if you like the more whimsical side, Machinarium if you want more focus on the point and click puzzle side.
I really feel like I should get Stranded Deep... have you played that? Where you crash in the ocean and have to travel to islands and find ship wrecks and survive and not get eaten by a shark or 10. No, I haven't played Stranded Deep yet, but it's in my Steam wishlist (so is Abzu). I usually don't buy games in Early Access though (Subnautica was the only exception I made to that rule, and I didn't regret it, obviously, since the game turned out beyond fabulous!) I'm loving house flipper I just find it really relaxing going around doing up a house, smashing a few walls and cleaning up the dirt... it like gives me the same level of satisfaction as cleaning my own house and seeing something turn from a mess into this nice polished newness. So there's 2 kind of ways to go in it, Thanks for the info about House Flipper. Sounds like something I would really enjoy. I'm always after relaxing games. I hope there's nothing timed about it? I play another game that is a cleanup game of sorts, too, but on the gory side: Viscera Cleanup Detail. I absolutely LOVE that game for some reason. It's all about cleaning up guts and gore and chemical messes in remote science-fiction-based places like space stations, other planet bases, laboratories, and such. Completely ridiculous, but calming in a sense. There is no fighting or dying involved, just cleaning up messes! My boyfriend thinks I'm crazy, lol Yes, No Man's Sky was an empty mess at release, but it's a wonderful game now. They have added everything that they had originally promised and more, and they're still supporting it now and providing huge patches / additions to the game for free. Make sure to update it to the latest before playing, since they keep adding stuff! NMS is a very relaxing game of exploration and discoveries, where you can choose to take on small or bigger missions, follow different story paths, or just do whatever you want, like building you very own bases, managing a freighter, and plenty other things. Have you played Goat Simulator, its like my go to game when I'm stressed! I picked it up for the PC for like £1.79 on steam. Just chilling as a goat smacking people into things and blowing stuff up... just like a goat. Yes, I have Goat Simulator and all its DLC! I've always loved it, as it's a wonderful stress-reliever indeed! EDIT: Star ★ , I just remembered one game that is very relaxing that you might like, since you enjoy underwater exploration! It's a bit older and maybe not quite as pretty as the latest and greatest, but it does look and sound nice, and I really like it when I need to de-stress. It's called Depth Hunter 2: Deep Dive, and it's just about exploring and underwater treasure-hunting. You can get the base game and its 3 DLCs as a bundle @ 89% off right now! Definitely worth it! Ratqueen I've briefly seen a little bit of Slime Rancher, but it didn't really seem to grab my attention, but your excitement over it is making me curious...what do you do in that game? I found Slime Rancher by browsing Steam's "Relaxing" category. When I launched it the first time, I was immediately charmed by the colorful/cartoony graphics, and chearful sounds and music. Basically, you're dropped at an empty ranch that's been handed to you, and you are equipped with a sort of vaccuming apparatus. There are empty plots everywhere on the ranch, where you can build gardens, corrals for animals (slimes), silos, and a multitude of other things. You start by vaccuming up some slimes you find on the land, put them in a corral, feed them the proper food (that you will find out there, and then grow in your gardens), and collect their plorts (droppings) to sell for money, or to use for science in order to unlock more items as you go. There are quite a few different kinds of slimes -- some inoffensive and some harmful -- and you can mix them together to obtain very cute hybrids that have the properties of both. There are also several large locations that are blocked by gates, for which you have to find the keys to unlock. It's basically a very colorful and cheerful game of exploration and resource management. I absolutely love it!!
(The first rule about money spent on Sims is; we don't talk about the money we've spent on Sims. XD) Haha, yes, that's probably best! I spent tons on Sims 2 and quite a bit on Sims 3 (but less), and I decided to stop after that. So I never bought Sims 4 (also, mostly, because they removed all my favorite features from the previous games, and then it's starting over with the DLC...) I can see how Subnautica can be scary. I was a little freaked out at first, too, but it's soooo beautiful. I loved it when I was able to build an underwater habitat -- I made it nice and cozy, with plants, furniture, an aquarium, with gorgeous views on several biomes all around. Loved it. But it does feel lonely.
