I hope that everyone will read this thread before they ask a question - I'm going to try and answer all of the common questions and save everyone a little time and effort and condense some of the most important aspects of hexing.
What do I use to hex?
In many cases, new hexers will find it easiest to begin hexing using Petz Workshop. It's visual, intuitive, and does almost anything a new hexer would ever need to do, with a few notable exceptions that will be covered later. Please note that when you hex in PWS, you're hexing a BREED FILE, not an individual pet. You have to open your game and adopt a pet from the AC in order to get the pet.
Once you feel more comfortable hexing, you'll want to start using LNZ Pro. This is the real meat of hexing - you can do everything PWS can do and more, but it's more time consuming. Almost every hexer today will tell you to become proficient in BOTH programs. LNZ Pro can hex on both breedfiles AND pet files.
For making a pet trot, you can use any hex editing software, but I personally like Hexplorer. This was the bread and butter of early hexers, and is the third program you should have on your computer for hexing.
How do I texture and anchor paintballs in PWS?
You can't.
Of course I'm not going to leave it at that! You need to use LNZ Pro, which you should have downloaded already. Open LNZ Pro and use it to open the BREED FILE - you can do it on the pet, but it's honestly far easier to do it in the breedfile. Open the breedfile and scroll down till you see something like this:
The area circled in red is where the information for your pet's paintballs are stored. The only number you need to worry about is that last one, which are all -1 at the moment. Select ALL of the numbers like so:
And copy paste them into a spreadsheet editor like Excel. Once they're there, select the column of numbers on the end, and use the search feature to replace the -1's with 0. This will make the balls take on the texture of whichever texture is in the 0 slot in your texture list, as shown below:
In this case, replacing the -1 with 0 would texture the spots with the hair10 texture. The list is counted like 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on. So the first texture is really texture # 0.
Back to the paintballs, I have added an extra column of 0's to the very end of the paintball information (the selected column in the picture). Why? This way the paintballs won't wiggle around or change size on you. Most people prefer anchored paintballs over unanchored - it's a simple step that will make your hexes look all the better.
Now select your paintballs:
Copy them, and paste them OVER the old paintballs that were in the breedfile.
TA DAH! Just save, and check out your newly textured, anchored spots!
Please PM me with any questions you think should be here!
