Also known as global warming. I'm doing this as kind of an environmental science project. If you want you can comment on why you think so, what has impacted your views, and if climate change is impacting your area at all. Don't bash others thoughts though, just be respectful. This is just for data. Please select any and all answers that you think based on what you already know and believe.

i have a bachelor degree majoring in geography, much of it targeted around global climate changes. I have also taken many classes that discuss different aspects of climate change and depending on the class you take, the spin on weather climate change is an issue changes drastically. The main thing that humans have done: pollute air and water systems (two things needed for basic life on this planet). This in turn through the greenhouse effect has sped up the process of warming in parts of the world. Many people do not believe that "global warming" is real because they do not see rising temperatures in their local area, however "global warming" are words that are used poorly. I prefer climate change because that is what is occurring. Weather pasterns are changing, some for the bad, while others can be seen as good. People dislike seeing species of animals die off (i dislike this as well) however if you look into the past of this planet, hundreds if not thousands of species have come and gone. Also, if some of these had not left our Earth, we would not be here as we are today. It is because the great reptiles (dinosaurs) died that mammals (eventually becoming us) were able to take control, evolve and grow. These changes (extinction and climate change) have been happening LONG before man inherited the Earth. We have just sped it up (I believe), and we think we can stop the world from doing what it will probably do on its own anyway.....

That was a very interesting and educated answer. I would like to add that because we've sped it up significantly, the climate's changing at a rate faster than evolution can keep up with. Some species are very adaptable, but there are many that can't keep up and will probably go extinct. Scientists think that we're causing a new mass extinction. And I agree that Climate Change is a much better word. What some people don't realize though, is that it's not just temperature that's changing. In Vermont, we've been having record snow and rain fall, there's been a lot of flooding. And we've had a tornado warning today, which should not happen here.

I agree, as climate is not the definition of temperature, climate is defined as everything weather related around you.
Also though, there have been many mass extinctions before humans existed where evolution could not keep up. I believe our pollution is accelerating things, but I have a hard time wrapping my brain around the media hype that it is all us after all of the schooling I have gone through.

I really, really hate it when people go "oh, it's a cold winter - so much for global warming, huh!"
Silly, silly people. Don't you know that the ice caps melting could send Europe into another ice age, because of disturbing the North Atlantic gulf stream? They even made a movie about it, for the illiterates out there! Global warming means GLOBALLY the temperatures will rise; not every country will experience warmer weather, though.
While the planet does experiences phases of cooling/warming, none have been as rapid as this phase we are going through. We've accelerated it and now nature can't keep up.

God, I had to repeat that to all my friends a least a half a dozen times this winter.

I know it's happeneing, but I guess you could consider me a pessimest since I believe it's too late to stop. I figure in the next 50 - 100 years or so, something major will happen... not too sure what but I'm sure much of the global population will die. =[

I think:
Climate change is a natural phenomena, and has occurred continuously throughout the history of the Earth. Some changes have been slow inclines or declines in temperatures, some have been very drastic and quick occurring (much like the changes we have been experiencing in the last decade).
Global WARMING is an inaccurate way to describe the changes we are experiencing today and over the last several decades. Yes, the "Global temperature average" will rise, but so are the "global cold temperature average" is plummeting. I rather call this phenomena "Global temperature fluctuation".
Human activities contribute to the acceleration of atmospheric warming and cooling. We are not the CAUSE of it. We can tone down our contributions to hopefully preserve the ice caps for a few more centuries but I think it is inevitable that ice caps will melt, things will change, and the Earth will continue it's always changing cycle.
Humans need to tone our pollution down, not for Global Warming's sake... for environment's sake. I would hate to see our wildlife die off because of our pollution and have my grandchildren or their grandchildren not be blessed with the natural things Earth has given us... The forests and ecosystems are amazing things that we need to worry about...

Well ... I think its a huge problem in different parts of the world and some people don't really care about it ... i know when i was in school teachers would spend maybe a class on it and then move on. And of course this year here in TN we had a air quality code orange for almost a week ... I'm pretty sure that is not helping anything!
