^^^ We are the same way, I swear my current dogs, Kramer and Fargo don't know their names. I call Fargo, Fargita, Fargeet, Geet, & Gita. And Kramer is mostly, Krummy, Krum Bum, The Bum, Dow Man.... my husband came up with a few of those, we sound like crazy people when we talk to oour dogs.

I said "People names" and "Character names" because I've named a few of my cats things like "Trip" "Bella" and "Timmy" but I've also named two of my cats after characters from Lion King 2 =P Tawny and Kovu, well I guess the name "Tawny" isn't technically from Lion King 2 but I did base it off of "Vitani" and it sounds pretty similar so I guess it counts

I give my pets names that seem to suit them.
Zelda, my little princess, sweet looking but tough, a real darling. Maisy, she was already named that when we adopted her, and she responded to it so it stuck. Hopscotch, bouncy little bunny, and it was the first name to pop in my head and it just stuck. Boo, my lil birdy, she's a brat.
So...two "character" names (Zelda and Boo), a sweets name (Hopscotch)<-kinda? like butterscotch but hoppy, and then Maisy, a people name

Often what I do when trying to come up with names is I just mix a bunch of letters together until they make something that sounds like a name. xD Like, Arnuil or Lanilokin. (Made them up then) But with Petz it depends, could be names I make up or just names like Skye and Keira. Sometimes character names.
