You can select 2 answers.
I like to give my pets semi-obscure character names (Larka, Tak, Link) and I particularly like to give my fish Island names, or 'place' names, like Torguga.
Foreign word names are also a favorite of mine. I like to come up with something that people probably won't have a prior association with.

My cat was called Tigger, my mom's dogs were Kizzy, Tina, Blade & Tequila (not all at the same time).
My sister likes giving them historical (Cleopatra) and people names (Tyson). If I got anymore pets, I'd probably name them after my own roleplay characters. >___>;

For me, I think it really depends on the type of pet, or... it even completely depends :} I tend to dislike people names for pets though (mmh, actually, I did have a black & white cat I had named Zachary, and a rat I had named Sybil, sooo... but, aside from those!) I really like food and/or silly names for rats, and my current cats are named Riddle and Dune. For dogs, I think I'm more into the foreign words/names (my family had a dog named Titus, and I had one named Belzebuth).

Have you ever seen the comercial where this man comes home and his dogs name is "Mr. Barky von schnauzer?" Well my dad started calling my dog (his name was Sparky) Mr. Sparky von schnauzer? And soon, my dad wrote that his full name was Mr. Sparky Von Schnauzer! We dont call him that though, we call him Sparky, but my dad still calls him that. And my 3 cats names are Sasha, Chip and Dale. And if my dad lets me get a rat, I plan on naming her Lola or Ophelia

Floral names or people names. Sometimes I give my own pets weird names or food names, but the family pets always have the former.

Floral names or people names. Sometimes I give my own pets weird names or food names, but the family pets always have the former. Oooo, I forgot about floral names. That's a good one too. My least favorite categories are sweet food names (too sappy) and literal names. I mean Midnight or something isn't bad, but it's pretty common. And doesn't really seem like a lot of thought went into naming the animal when it's just like "Fluffy" or "Smokey".

I HATE food related names for some reason >> And if I see one more grey cat named Smokey or another Shih Tzu named Gizmo I might scream XD.
I usually do people names or character names. My dogs have all been people names (Sady, Bailey, Cody and Piper), my cats are SORTA people names.. (Raven and Draco) and a lot of my critters have been character names.
All of my current pets have people names though ^^ (Draco and Stewie were named after characters.. but they can be people names yes? XD)

I really have no idea what I prefer. I think I go by animal by animal basis, and mane by name basis. My dad has had a ton of animals (x.x) so there's been a wide variety of names..
Zoe, Einstein, Cooper, Jinx, and Shadow were all dogs. Shadow was named more along the sense of my shadow than by his color, he's not black. Cooper was named after Alice Cooper, whom my dad loves.. Jinx was named by the rescue I think, but I love his name haha.
TC, Socks, Whiskey, Roxy, Luna, Mickey, Louie, Zoe, and Missy were cats. The last five were kittens we had for a short amount of time, I named them all lolz. TC stood for Tanner's cat, or The Cat. Socks was my cat, named him because of his feet. Whiskey and Roxy were both named after famous bars I guess.

For me, it really depends. I've got a rabbit named G'Kar and a border collie named Flyer. Flyer was totally obscure, just what my parents named him when we got him..though he's so my dog. And G'Kar is from a tv series, probably most won't know it.

My cat is Darkness, and uhh, he's solid black... so that's pretty self-explanatory. My dog is Sega Genesis-we just call her Sega.. after the gaming console, obviously. Her name was "Cinnamon" when I got her, and I thought that was very frilly frou-frou girly gag-inducing yucky. Not sure why 'Sega', it just seemed to fit her, and she liked the sound of it.

My cats go through about 6 different names before they get the one that sticks. I just kinda name them things that pop in my head, and keep renaming them until something fits (My poor identity crisis kitties...) My first cat, Bandit, was originally named Skippy, then Patches, then Socks... then Bandit, ha! My second cat was Zipper, Twister, Yuna, Kairi, Charlotte, and then Keiko. Keiko stuck the most. Meemo we got from a friend, and I kinda changed it to 'Meemoo' since he's really fat x3
My parents usually name the dogs. Jack is named so because he has a brown patch over his eye like a pirate, and my mother is a tad obsessed with PotC.

Errr...I just put other. Because my female Whippet is named Daisy (I named her when I was 5 years old), just because she's sweet like a...daisy? Or something? xD My other two dogs are Oliver and Stitch. Stitch came with his name, and since he was 4 years old and had had the name since he was a puppy, we didn't have the heart to change it. I have no fricking idea why my mom named Oliver, Oliver. It makes absolutely no sense to me...she just came home one day and was like, "We're naming our new puppy Oliver." and I was like... Okay. So...yeah. That's the story of my dogs. Then I've had 4 guinea pigs. The first two were named Princess I and Princess II, respectively. I wasn't a creative child. The second two were named Will and Charlie. Don't ask...they seemed like normal-ish names for guinea pigs at the time. :S

It really truly honestly depends..
My dogs have had names of.. Roxy, Fang, Rust, Maggie Muggle, Molly, and Akane.
My cats have had names of.. Whiskers, Natalie, Baxter, Chartreux, Mosspaw, P-Chan, Checkers, Aleksander, Albus, Minerva, Bites, Kali, Epona, Isis..
Rats.. Lucy, Sally, Maddie (Madeline), Terri, Sandy, Tonks, Pomona, Mars, Cinder, Lillith
Horses.. Sam and Charlie are the two I've named.
So, yeah, it really and truly varies with me.
Oh yes, and the bunny is named Mew..short for Mini Evil Whiskers. You gotta know Whiskers and Mew to understand it though.
