As some of you may know, Windows in their back-stabbing way of doing business decided to retcon their statement that they wouldn't be replacing Vista anytime soon and are in the final stages of putting out Windows 7. Since it's available as a 'trial' download, I decided to put it through it's paces and hopefully find any bugs with Petz and other popular programs before the majority of you start messing with it. I will be updating this post with my findings.
PROGRAMS TO BE TESTED
Programs that have been tested will have a strikethrough, and a section describing their performance in another section.
Firefox
Petz 4
Petz Workshop
LNZ Pro
PetzA
Spotting Utility
Pidgin
Chrome
Zone Alarm
PSP 8
ICY Hexplorer
WinRAR
Winzip
Divx
iTunes
VLC Media Player
Photoscape
Photofiltre
Irfanview
GIMP
Avast Antivirus
SUPERAntiSpyware
Blender
Python
RESULTS
Color code:
Green means it works no problem.
Maroon means you have to fiddle a little.
Red means it doesn't work at all.
Basic Functionality is astounding so far. It boots up in about half the time Vista takes, and is easy to navigate. However, the format change will be a bit of a throw for regular Windows users; it functions very much like Mac OSX, with a 'dock' you can 'pin' programs to. Haven't had much time to mess with it yet, but so far my computer is running much faster than it ever did with Vista.
Firefox works like a dream. I used IE to download it, and it installed without a hitch. So far the flash plugin seems to be working, and basic functions are all at 100%.
Pidgin is a free, open source IM client I use and recommend highly. It works perfectly with Windows 7, despite not being marketed for it. I suppose this goes to show how much they've worked on the compatibility issues that plagued Vista.
Petz 4 had a few issues to begin with. You have to tell it to run in compatibility mode, and run it as an Administrator, which prompts that freaking UAC thing to pop up. I disables the UAC because it annoys the hell out of my most of the time. However, the pets are undistorted, and so far it doesn't look like 7 hides stuff like Vista did. Time will tell.
Chrome works just as easily as Firefox; install went smoothly, and it seems to be interfacing well with the new operating system.
Zone Alarm DOES NOT WORK as of 5/5/09. It doesn't seem able to recognize the operating system. Even running the installer using a compatibility mode doesn't fool the OS - it shuts it down the second you try to install it. On the one hand I can see why, but on the other I think it's a kind of snubbing of ZA. Here's hoping they fix that soonish, I trust ZA more than any other firewall.
PWS works great. No compatibility needed, it just works like a breeze. I recolored a dachie to make sure it wouldn't have trouble editing the files. PWS's new look, and the hexed dog.
LNZPro also worked like a charm. No problems, no need for compatibility adjustments or anything.
PetzA has also been working well; the brainsliders are behaving normally, but I haven't tested all the functions of Petza yet.
IrfanView works great; it also looks like I need to update my Vista copy to the newest version XD.
Blender works like a charm, no complaints at all.
Python also works perfectly, no compatibility needed.
If you have a program I can acquire without paying for (i.e., downloadable programs you would like me to test) please post here!
