I'll add my two cents on brexing as well from the PKC perspective
1.) File swapping - having two different file parents *or* two same file parents, but you want the offspring to look like a different file.
Examples:
Doggo is a dalmatian. One of his parents is an original PFM Dalmatian and the other is a hexed for realism breed. I want him to look like the PFM one, so I will breed his parents to make a "mixed breed" and then hex the original PFM file to how I want him to look. I will then copy the puppy and adult LNZ into the bred pet file and save. He will be a "mixed breed" by pedigree in the game but will look exactly like a PFM dalmatian.
His offspring will probably have to be brexed in a similar fashion since he may pass the hexed breed traits.
Example V2:
Doggo is a dalmatian. His parents are both PFM dalmatians but I want him to look like a hexed breed file. I will open the hexed file and make it look how I want him to look and copy the LNZ in to puppy and adult to make him look like a hexed file.
His offspring will probably have to be brexed just like above.
^ this category is super popular when crossing file version 1 and file version 2, or crossing coat or tail varieties that were separate breed files. I like it since I can adopt petz from files I may not like, and "fix" them to look like the ones I want - even if they're /technically/ not that file It also opens up pedigrees for people who like say a petzy file but want a baby from from newer, hexed files, or vice versa.
2.) Correcting Issues - newer files
Some of the new breedfiles don't pass their scaling true, so gen 2+ will look WONKY if they're bred. So what we do is breed and don't care WTF the pup looks like, then go in and hex a gen 1 to look how we want the offspring, then copy and paste the LNZ so gen 2+ looks correct. It helps fix the scaling and ball shifts/defuzz that happens with breeding hexed files with tons of addballz.
3.) "Hex Your Own" breedings
It's a popular thing now on PKC to do HYO, a Do-It-Yourself pet project. A breeder will send you a puppy or kitten that has nice PKC titled parents, but may or may not look right for conformation show ring. You can go hex the breed file yourself and make it look how /you/ want it, file swap, etc etc. Then you do the registration and whatnot, but it's a great way for busy people to offer pups and kittens without having to spend forever hexing, and the adopter gets exactly what they want.
4.) Minor Corrections
For files that do breed true but mutate, you can go in and .pet edit the file without cloning a gen 1. Fix eyelids, textures, eyes, etc. I do it to fix eyelids mostly as I am really picky and they need to be black or matching the coat ^^;
I also corrected a kuvasz once who ended up ORANGE. He became white like he was supposed to be XP
5.) Fixing disasters
Okay this one I admit I cannot do. This one is like Sasha said, or how some of our more creative breeders do and fix the 'freaks and geeks' that have paws in weird places, random floating ballz, and linez going sideways. AKA "glow up" XD
